Kinect tech team releases open-source drivers photo

PrimeSense are the folks behind Kinect's motion sensing technology. They've just releleased open-source drivers for the peripheral, reports Develop.

The team had planned on releasing these drivers at a later date, but they decided to put the rush on them in light of the successes of Kinect hacking community OpenKinect. This gives access to the sensors in Kinect as well as provides an API for writing apps.

Here's the question: Is Microsoft going to be cool with all of this? Somehow I doubt it.

Wow, that's actually a cool way to get tech heads interested in the tech that drives Kinect.

I read about a month ago that MS acquired Canesta, makers of 3D motion sensing tech accurate to within mm's.

It appears that MS is serious about their motion sensing tech.

Microsoft is cool with it actually:

Flatow: So you have no problem at Microsoft with people using the open-source drivers, then?

Loftis: As an experience creator, I'm very excited to see that people are so inspired, that it was less than a week after the Kinect came out before they had started creating and thinking about what they could do.

Flatow: So no one's gonna get in trouble.

Kipman: Nope, absolutely not.

Flatow: You heard it right from the mouth of Microsoft!

despite MS reputation as total assholes i believe this is in their best interest as the hype for kinect will die down after everyone realizes there is no games for it and what a piece of crap it is

the sooner we get over this kinect/move bs the sooner we can get back to real games

Way to embrace the hacking community rather than fight it. I bet it'll help increase sales as well when tons of universities buy them for science projects and the like.

I really doubt Microsoft will see this as a good thing, but it honestly is. The hackers are making better use of the peripheral than any game company has so far.

A kinect sale is a kinect sale, and as MS has this locked up in the patent box you're buying kinect to use it.

I think this is definitely a good thing. I've been about a thousand times more interested in the homebrew stuff people have developed than anything I've seen on the Xbox.

Isn't Microsoft making profit on Kinect hardware?....

I think this has Microsoft's blessing. ;)

@Duuuude has a point. Microsoft is still selling Kinect to the hackers and those who want to play the homebrews. Also, the mommies and daddies and babies don't know what the hell Open Source means, so they'll still sell Pet the Kitty! and Stop Being Fat, Fatty! and whatnot.

Microsoft is totally OK with this because the faster these hacks come out, the sooner Microsoft can incorporate the best Kinect coding techniques into their core libraries. 3rd parties will benefit from the easier development, and we gamers will have better Kinect experiences.

Microsoft would be committing peripheral suicide if it didn't give the go ahead nod to this. I mean, why put a stop to giddy programmers wanting to get the most out of your hardware? This will lead to good things for hackers, MS and, most importantly, gamers.

I tip my hat to MS ad PrimeSense on this one.

Yeah this is a good thing. My brother got really into hacking the PSP, but Sony did everything in their power to discourage that.

Microsoft is making a sale off of the hackers just as much as the casual kiddies. And just as other people have said, whatever cool things the hackers accomplish, Microsoft can apply to their future software. Some companies pay teams to brainstorm new ideas and possibilities for their product, but Microsoft is getting it for free by encouraging this.

Ha ha! That's like using a wooden knife to stab a Colossus in the back! Colossal Microsoft probably wouldn't mind--let alone notice--the stab in the back, but we can applaud PrimeSense's ballsiness for the futile attack.
