According to sources at The Verge, Microsoft is readying a new dashboard software update to the Xbox 360 that will add cross-application exercise tracking. Entitled Kinect Play Fit, the system would work with "most" Kinect games and "provide tracking metrics in the cloud." The service will also be greatly added to (but will not require) a new piece of wireless heart rate monitoring hardware known as Joule. Unlike the heart rate monitor included with EA Sports Active 2, it would also work with a wide range of Kinect titles.
As someone who uses her Kinect for fitness regularly, this excites me. As someone who's pretty sure the heart rate monitor will immediately register "legally dead," this makes me frowny face.
