Killzone almost a year older, K2 double XP weekend coming photo

On November 26th, deep in the forests (or whatever) of the Netherlands, developer Guerrilla will be partying it up, celebrating the Dutch release of Killzone. We bring this up because all of you are invited to party with the studio. Sort of.

According to a recent official PS blog post, Guerilla will be hosting a “Killzone 2 retro tournament” between November 27th and 30th with only two (DLC) maps in the rotation: Beach Head and Southern Hills. In addition to this, the crew is throwing a Double XP weekend thing between those dates.

If you don’t have the DLC, it’s no big deal; Guerrilla plans to slash the price of two bits of content. As of today, Flash & Thunder should be listed at $2.99 while the Map Pack Bundle is to be $9.99. Neat.

There’s more to this celebration, including some retro commentaries, so do check out the PS blog post for more information if you’re down in Killzone. While you do that, we’ll be practicing for this weekend. Anyone remember how to throw grenades?

Can anyone tell me if Killzone 2 still has awful input lag like in the demo? I just got a PS3 and want to get it, but the controls in the demo are awful. Any help would be appreciated.

Haven't played in a while, time to hop back on and pop some heads while I wait for uncharted 2 and modern warefare 2.

I hate the kill lag sooooo much, you shoot the shit out of someone, then they shoddy blast you and after you've died you hear a bleep indicating you've scored a kill. It drives me fucking batty.

Yay, I'll go back to this for the weekend while I'm still in Modern Warfare 2 mode, and probably end up lobbing a grenade at myself while trying to look down the scope!

All in good fun.

Dear Guerrilla Games,

I love you.

Yours,

Takeshi

(p.s. don't pay attention to the whiners who will surely want to mention stuff about the controls and stuff. It's getting old I know, but they don't.)

So, I just bought Killzone 2 last weekend (currently the only game I own for my brand new PS3), and my experience so far has been... just OK. The graphics are good, but not the second coming of Christ like those on N4G would lead you to believe (I guess it's my fault for reading that awful site). Great character models and effects, for sure, but the environments and weapons are pretty generic/bland from what I've seen so far (I'm about half-way through the story). Also, the gameplay so far is pretty generic and predictable in my opinion, though I do enjoy the weighty feeling your character has, as well as the well-implemented cover system (I really wish you could remap the controls beyond the presets, however, but that's just because I'm not used to the DualShock yet).

The reason I mention this (not flaming at all... after all, I bought the damn game, didn't I?) is because I'm wondering if maybe the multiplayer side is what all the fuss is about? I still haven't tried it out, but if the maps are on sale and worthwhile, I'd like to pick them up, but if the multiplayer doesn't offer anything I don't already get in other games (I enjoy Battlefield, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead, to name a few), then I'd rather not sink any more money into this one.

Thanks for the advice!

Control options in multi are definitely improved. You have to adjust the settings manually but the barely there lag makes the game much more enjoyable.

I didn't like the controls in Killzone 2 either. But Warzone was fun.

despite the game not being AMAZING and just GOOD, I still find myself amazed at the graphics every time I boot it up. Its only competitor on consoles is uncharted 2 and I think thats just up to preference.

@ThrashingLimbsEd

I think Uncharted 2 takes the crown for console games now, but they're both amazing looking. The only thing separating those two from hi-end PC games (Crysis) in terms of visual fidelity is resolution. (720p looks pathetic next to native 1080p.) But beyond that, the post-processing effects, texture resolution, lighting, etc. are as good as any game on PC. The volumetric smoke effects in Killzone are fucking unbelievable.

@mrandydixon

Yeah i think the whole deal with this game is that it was the only PS3 exclusive shooter that wasn't terrible... sadly both this and Resistance are horribly generic. Killzone 2 isn't bad, its just a 50/50 mix of Gears of War and COD4. Like actually though, that's EXACTLY what it feels like, in every conceivable way.

As for your question, Left4Dead and Team Fortress 2 have few peers when it comes to multiplayer fun. Killzone is good but nothing special. COD4 is the most easily comparable to killzone, and i thought COD was a bit more engaging. MW2 is probably your best choice if your looking for a similar multiplayer game. (I haven't played it but i'm assuming it's better than COD4.)

@JohnThEReaper

No lag when i played last, which was a few months ago.

Actually, the multiplayer class system is heavily "borrowed" from TF2, although the actual gameplay is more like a COD game, so if you like the sound of that give it a try since you already have a game and if you get into it, buy the maps and if not then don't. I personally don't play it anymore as I'm too busy playing newer games but when I did play it, I played it a lot and it was all good fun. It gets a bit chaotic with 32 people but the modes keep changing and keeps things fresh.

@fonzee

actually, the TF2 elements are not simply "borrowed", they're right out stolen. even the added maps are just reskinned TF2 maps and one of them is a UT2k4 map - and sony charges you for them.

I'd say it's only 'like Call of Duty' in that you acquire XP points to unlock abilities classes and weapons. That's it.

Gameplay wise it plays ALOT like Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, rather than CoD or TF2, except instead of having 'push' styled maps the maps stay within the same area but does change it's objectives on the fly similar to such.

Also screw the haters KZ2's multiplayer is a lot of fun if you enjoy Enemy Territory. I just dislike how you have to unlock the classes before you get to use them.

I used to play killzone 2 multiplayer all the time. In fact, I played it a week straight, minus sleep and work, in order to get one of the trophies. One of the best weeks ever.
But now that I have modern warfare 2...

Thank God...I have a legit reason (other than being utterly nonplussed with it) to take MW2 back to Blockbuster early.

Oh, oh wait...Uncharted haz the double XP weekend too??!
