Killzone 3 controls less heavy, more 'run & gun' photo

Were you among those who criticized Killzone 2 for having controls that felt heavy and clunky? Apparently there were quite a few of you, as Guerrilla has seen fit to address the issue in Killlzone 3 with a system that is much closer to established "run n' gun" protocols.

"I’m confident that when Killzone 3 comes out, we’re going to have a set of controls that will really appreciate the vast majority of audiences," states studio head Herman Hulst. :The heavy sensation of KZ2 is absolutely gone. Instead, this feels much closer to standard run-and-gun responsiveness."

I actually quite liked the controls of Killzone 2, but if KZ3 is going to stop people moaning about it, then that's fine by me as well. What did you think of the controls, and do you believe the improvement is needed?

I personal thought the control settings the game shipped with were fine and set the game apart in a good way. That said, I'll still be picking this up day one.

NO.

I Loved the Killzone 2 controls it was a massive relief from the ever popular "twitchy-auto-aim-heavy-watered-down-make-it-easy-for-the-retards" controls of games like motherfucking Call of Duty and shit like that.

This is a REAL shame. At least in the last one it had the options to switch between fuckwit-twitch-controls and solid, realistic controls.

PLEASE GUERRILLA PUT THE OPTION IN AGAIN!

Odd how this JUST came up after I played KillZone 2 for the first time, just a few minutes ago. My only complaint with the control scheme is R2 is used for grenades. It just didn't feel right to me. Although, after a few minutes with the game, I thought it all worked out pretty effortlessly.

Either way, if they're improving them in any way, count me in.
Absolutely stoked for KZ3!

I rather liked the "heavy and clunky" feel of the Killzone 2controls; it was the controller layout itself that I had issues with. (I didn't like having to hold a button to stay into cover and hold another button at the same time to aim down the sites.)

Having a "lock into cover" button would have fixed everything for me... this is a shame.

Tbh i didnt particularly like the way the game handled, but it wasn't bad it just took me awhile to get used to. I am glad that they are changing it though. I think part of my problem was also that KZ2 is the only fps game i own for my ps3. I tend to play most fps games on 360 and i think the analogue sticks kinda felt screwy to me. Anyways, can't wait.

Cool, so now it feels like every other fucking FPS.

I liked how everything felt like it had weight and wasn't a plastic toy. Goddamn.

This will be a welcome addition as in KZ2 I set the sensitivity up to max and it still wasn't high enough, hopefully this will solve that problem.

KZ2's controls were fine. People were just too used to Call of Duty and couldn't be bothered to adapt, thus they complained. Not every shooter needs lightning quick movements, y'know?

Booo!!! More damn floaty controls... I have plenty of options if I wanted that type of feel. It's bad enough that people are pissed at the idea that they might have to get off the couch to play a game, they don't even like to SIMULATE that what their doing onscreen is actually physically demanding.

Sorry. I'm in a griping kind of mood... I still love ya Guerilla.

Once I got used to KZ2's controls, they were fine... though I guess this time there will be less of a change when switching to the new game from other shooter games out there!

Yeah Killzone 2 took a little but to get a feel for the controls but once I did I really liked the way it felt. When they started to patch them to be "better" I didn't really care for what they did and stopped playing the game. Some people tend to forget these games have options for sensitivity and you can play with the sliders to adjust your controls to your liking. Some fiddling and KZ2 worked fine.

The controls were a bit too heavy for me. Upping the sensitivity helps but putting it too high makes it feel weird. Despite the space-age setting I felt KZ was a more realistic war game than shooters like CoD. Since it pushed for realism so much the movement made even less sense to me. It felt like they were overcompensating. Human beings are agile. We don't turn into tanks because when we carry a rifle. When climbing stairs in that game you run into walls because you don't turn fast enough. I'm sorry but that's just not realistic. Just make it balanced don't turn it into CoD.

The weight and feel of Killzone 2 is one of the best things about the game. The complainers weren't people who were going to buy it anyway. Definitely killing my interest in Killzone 3 with this sort of announcement.

People don't actually WANT different. They want comfortable. They want FFVII and CoD over and over and over again, just with different settings. Then they complain that it's a ripoff. But you can't blame Guerrilla, this is a business, after all.

i don't give a shit about the clunky controls -- i've always preferred BC over CoD. they just need to get rid of that damn kill-lag. i hate nobbing a guy with my shotgun only to have him fill me full of bullets, and drop dead a second later *BLEEP*.

@President:

It wasn't the look speed that bothered me, it was the acceleration. The amount of time you had to lay on the stick in a given direction to start rotating was WAY too long even with sensitivity maxed.

Anyway, they should just throw in a "Classic" mode for the people that liked the KZ2 style. My tolerance for cumbersome controls is non-existent regardless of genre.

*glares are Resident Evil franchise*

I enjoyed the KZ2 controls, thought they took a lot of getting used to and they made it hard to jump back into it after playing other shooters

After getting used to them, I thought the control scheme in KZ2 was just fine. It's disappointing to see them changed. But Guerrilla wants to sell to the masses so they have to make their game conform to what the masses expect. Hard to blame them.

The look-controls the game *actually* shipped with, as I saw it, were just bad. Simply unresponsive, and this was confirmed through input delay testing. Once it was patched with the high-precision mode though, I thought it was fine. I have a feeling a lot of the people who defend the controls didn't play it pre-patch.

I didn't have any trouble with the button layout itself, which also I heard complaints about. Alt-2 all the way.

I quite liked the controls for KZ2. I couldn't make pointless steps or whatnot. Whatever though. I'm sure I'll still enjoy KZ3.

I liked the controls right out of the box. You had to work at them, but it slowed down multiplayer a lot...which was good.

The controls weren't comfy, the default button set was batshit uncomfortable, and the ones closest to normal where even somewhat annoying.

The precision stuff was fine, the High Precision Mode they patched in just made it much better.

If they can allow us to customize the layout if they insist on using the crap layouts they did before, I'm all for KZ3.

I'm glad they're doing this. Multiplayer was unplayable for me because of this. It just wasn't fun. I don't really like COD either because of how twitchy it is. Hopefully they can find a good middle ground.

I have no idea why everyone bitched about Killzone 2's controls. I thought they felt great! People just burrow themselves into this hole where they believe they only like the controls of COD or Halo and are not willing to get used to a new control scheme that is different.
I don't like this news.

If they standardize the control scheme and increase the FOV (KZ2 FOV was way to narrow) I will give a look. I will definitely rent it first before I buy it. I made that mistake with KZ2.

(I dont even play COD that much and I know that.) your saying you rather have a hard control scheme then a easy one? It isnt a control scheme for retards its a control scheme that works the best.

KZ 2 was great. I still play online a lot. But a lot also needs to be changed.

1st: I had fun with the controls. If the new controls make the game more fun to play than it already is, i'm cool with it. 2nd: the kill lag needs a desperate fix. too many times have i watched me and my opponent drop dead from headshots that happen simultaneously. 3rd: balance the wack ass rocket launcher/grenadier class. its an absolute pain to play with those explosive weapons enabled and it sucks to have a class that is never used. 4th: create some kind of roaming team spawn points. the tactician is great when you have a good one on your team but if you don't, spawn killing is inevitable. 5th: there needs to be something done with the "assassination" mode which is always totally impossible to defend against. Whenever that game comes up its a sure fire win for the attacking team.

Once I got used to the controls they were fine, but I can see where others would not like them. I prefer the fast pace of mw2 so if they can find a happy medium I'd be very happy with that.
