Sony's VP of Marketing, Scott Steinberg, has been spewing impressive amounts of hype today. While he talked about the "embarrassment of riches," Steinberg also told Gamedaily that Killzone 2 demonstrates the PS3's superiority over other systems, and will make 360 fans want a slice of Blu-ray.
"We feel that Killzone 2 is a tremendous exclusive," he beamed. "It's an exclamation point that demonstrates the distance between the PS3 and other systems,
"We have others shooters, but we differentiate [Killzone 2] from Resistance and SOCOM. The glorious amount of fidelity is superior to any other platform; it's a true showcase of the PS3's graphical superiority. The game is 40 Gigs and could not be done on anything else. It will move people from the sidelines, and from what we've seen from blogs, will push 360 owners to try out the PS3. I think it's going to be a major launch for us and this historical PlayStation brand."
Modesty, Sony does not need it.
I won't argue against Killzone 2's quality. It's a fantastic title and has certainly provided the PS3 with a shooter that easily rivals anything on the Xbox 360. Somehow though, I don't feel Killzone will be enough to prize hardcore 360 fans away from Halo 3, even if it's blatantly better.

Will 360 owners get a PS3 for killzone 2? No.
But at least it stopped all those annoying "Witch console has the best graphics" blogs.... for now.
If I was a 360 gamer and I read a boast like this, it'd piss me off more than make me want to throw my hands up and shout about the glory that is the PS3.
I want a PS3 for Yakuza 3 (if we get it in the US), Valkyria Chronicles, and Little Big Planet. Killzone 2 is far from what I'd consider worth buying a console for, much like Halo. Halo and Killzone 2's biggest selling point is their online multiplayer, and for people like me who couldn't give a damn about that sort of thing the rest of the games offer very little.
Also, it seems like even Sony spouts the same rhetoric as their fanboys: KILLZONE 2 WILL SAVE THE PS3.
You calling MGS4 a movie?! Heh.
FPSs never do that well in Japan. A small part of that could be because of the Japanese culture feeling towards firearms. That's just a thought.
I don't think Killzone 2 itself will sell that many if any PS3s to 360 FPS fans because they already have Halo 3, CoD 4&5, Left 4 Dead and a few others. It's just not enough on its own. And of course the more 'hardcore' 360 fans won't have any to do with the PS3.
Qraze said it best.
And I can't tell if Jack is being serious or not.
but will K2 make fpsz fans get a PS3, well yes. K2 is an excellent shooter and it actually feels different from other shooters.if your an fps fan then you probably don't give a damn about what system the games on you want your crac, uh I mean fps.
One game can sway people to buy a console, because if your an honest to goodness fan of games what console your game is on probably is of little importance to you. All of us have brought a system for just one game because I have never heard of someone buying a system with no games.
and that's a pretty bold statement by sony. having an overly pretty very average FPS with "only on playstation" tacked on doesn't necessarily make it a system seller as sony may think.
trying to mimick halo's success only bites you in the ass.
Pretty sure a decent PC could handle Killzone 2.
As for the 40 gigs, how much of that is duplicate data to compensate for the Blu-Ray drives slow read speed?
They have different upsides but both amount to the same thing. Which ever console you like, you just rationalize that Halozone is better than Resistance: Gears of Man or vice versa.
Sony sound like arrogant douchebags
Their game is probably good but there's no way I'm dropping that much money on another console, especially if I hate FPS controls in general on playstation anyway.
my arse. it's a good game. I'm playing in SD with mono audio and I like it.
I'm sorry. I feel very bad for you.
Brown-grey-blur 2
Not interested one bit.
Arrogant idiots.
Love me that game!
I'm primarily a 360 and PC Gamer, but Killzone 2 was the reason I played my friend's PS3. I was very impressed. Now I'm thinking about getting a PS3 soon.
However, without the character switching, it is still, at its core, a "typical" shooter. It's a very well done typical shooter, but still typical. Is it enough to get a console for? Eh, I dunno. It might *help.*
I'm not saying that to be a dick, it's just how it is. I believe that that is the whole reason for the fanboy wars. I try to stay out of things, but I have to step in here and say that both the PS3 and the 360 are wonderful, unique experiences. If you don't have one or the other, you ARE missing out on certain unique things about the systems, but that's just life. Get over it.
I see it at every site. People spamming the comments with negativity over every other system, just to feel like they aren't missing out. Gets old.
Secondly, no game is worth £300. I'd like to get a PS3 at some point, but given my student life, £300 is a huge chunk out of my budget. And I do like eating, you know! I look forward to the PS3 being cheaper though, mainly so I can play Valkyria Chronicles. (I still don't understand why that game is an exclusive. It's made by Sega!)
Mommy wow I'm a big kid now.
Anyway, no way in hell are they impacting the Halo/Gears of War crowd. While there are a good number of PS3s out there, the 360 rules the North Americas where the highest number of people buy games and play online.
If you had two console choices....
1) DVD console, cutting edge games, reliable, everything you need "in the box," free online.
2) A VHS / CD console, extortionate peripherals, subscription online, tonnes of generic games with a couple of gems and a couple of overhyped shit stains (Halo, looking at you)
Which would you go for? Specially being as though most games are out on both. For now at least, until games get too big for the VHS / CD console.
It seems people totally ignore the fact that the errorbox is at the end of it's formats life. DVD is a dying breed. 40gig games are ALWAYS going to be simply better than 5gig games.
Simple as.
errorbox is the past, PS3 is the future.
