Killzone 2 will get Xbox 360 fans to try a PS3, claims Sony photo

Sony's VP of Marketing, Scott Steinberg, has been spewing impressive amounts of hype today. While he talked about the "embarrassment of riches," Steinberg also told Gamedaily that Killzone 2 demonstrates the PS3's superiority over other systems, and will make 360 fans want a slice of Blu-ray.

"We feel that Killzone 2 is a tremendous exclusive," he beamed. "It's an exclamation point that demonstrates the distance between the PS3 and other systems,

"We have others shooters, but we differentiate [Killzone 2] from Resistance and SOCOM. The glorious amount of fidelity is superior to any other platform; it's a true showcase of the PS3's graphical superiority. The game is 40 Gigs and could not be done on anything else. It will move people from the sidelines, and from what we've seen from blogs, will push 360 owners to try out the PS3. I think it's going to be a major launch for us and this historical PlayStation brand."

Modesty, Sony does not need it.

I won't argue against Killzone 2's quality. It's a fantastic title and has certainly provided the PS3 with a shooter that easily rivals anything on the Xbox 360. Somehow though, I don't feel Killzone will be enough to prize hardcore 360 fans away from Halo 3, even if it's blatantly better.

Is Killzone 2 better than other FPSs on the 360? Possibly.

Will 360 owners get a PS3 for killzone 2? No.

Generally I tend to lean towards the Sony machine more than the Microsoft machine, but even I don't think Killzone 2 (as great as it might be) will be a convincing turning point for Xbox fans. Some might try it out, but, as many have mentioned, will not feel comfortable with the "sluggish" control and appeal of the game.

You know what? I wonder how Killzone 2 is doing in Japan? Do Japanese love fps games? I don't think Killzone 2 would make me want to get a PS3. I already have GoW 2 and Cod 4 and Cod:WaW. Another question, is blu-ray actually utilized in video games? Or is it just to play movies?

If I had a PS3 I'd get Killzone 2, but one game is not going to get me to drop hundreds of dollars on a second console. Assassination doesn't pay that well.

I have played Killzone 2 and though I enjoyed it I would not buy a PS3 for the game. The game is basically, quoting Yatzee here, a cross between Gears of War and COD. Now if I bought a PS3 I would probably buy Killzone 2. I mean with so few games to choose from your pretty much left with Killzone 2, Metal Gear, Little Big Planet, or Rachet and Clank. I've heard things about Resistance in the positive category, but again I always think why get a PS3 when I can stick with my 360 or even get a Wii.

Press releases like this make me feel sad that I have a PS3. I want Killzone 2, I don't deny that, but just because Sony scored some points why do they have crow about it like a huge douchebag?

If I was a 360 gamer and I read a boast like this, it'd piss me off more than make me want to throw my hands up and shout about the glory that is the PS3.

Hahaha, Killzone 2? Fuck that game, it's really just a mediocre piece of crap with perty graphics. I actually do want to get a PS3 eventually, but it's for over hyped, overrated trash like that.

I want a PS3 for Yakuza 3 (if we get it in the US), Valkyria Chronicles, and Little Big Planet. Killzone 2 is far from what I'd consider worth buying a console for, much like Halo. Halo and Killzone 2's biggest selling point is their online multiplayer, and for people like me who couldn't give a damn about that sort of thing the rest of the games offer very little.

kz2 is an online masterpiece. lots of depth, the same commercial shown at all times of the day, takes time to master, beautiful and lots of fun to be had with friends. i don't care if 360 owners don't want it, i have and really enjoy the hell out of it, i didn't get a 360 for halo3 and if i had a 360 i wouldn't get a ps3 for kz2. it is the best looking game out now until uncharted2 and heavy rain come out.

No thanks, bros. I already have enough shooters to choose from on the 360 library. If I ever get around to buying a PS3, it sure as fuck won't be for more shooters.

Also, it seems like even Sony spouts the same rhetoric as their fanboys: KILLZONE 2 WILL SAVE THE PS3.

You calling MGS4 a movie?! Heh.

FPSs never do that well in Japan. A small part of that could be because of the Japanese culture feeling towards firearms. That's just a thought.

I don't think Killzone 2 itself will sell that many if any PS3s to 360 FPS fans because they already have Halo 3, CoD 4&5, Left 4 Dead and a few others. It's just not enough on its own. And of course the more 'hardcore' 360 fans won't have any to do with the PS3.

KZ2 blows Halo out of the water. Also, how was KZ over hyped? Last time I checked I didn't see KZ on a soda pop bottle and at KFC. You little kids can stay with you crappy Halo. Us adults will play our "grown up" shooter. Come play PS3 FNF's when you grow some balls.

Sheesh look at all the hate.

but will K2 make fpsz fans get a PS3, well yes. K2 is an excellent shooter and it actually feels different from other shooters.if your an fps fan then you probably don't give a damn about what system the games on you want your crac, uh I mean fps.

One game can sway people to buy a console, because if your an honest to goodness fan of games what console your game is on probably is of little importance to you. All of us have brought a system for just one game because I have never heard of someone buying a system with no games.

oi! that's jin-roh

and that's a pretty bold statement by sony. having an overly pretty very average FPS with "only on playstation" tacked on doesn't necessarily make it a system seller as sony may think.

trying to mimick halo's success only bites you in the ass.

"The game is 40 Gigs and could not be done on anything else."

Pretty sure a decent PC could handle Killzone 2.

As for the 40 gigs, how much of that is duplicate data to compensate for the Blu-Ray drives slow read speed?

Why do these people - by which I mean Sony, Microsoft, and their phalanxes of fanboys - think anyone cares about their console's post-apocalyptic alien shooters vs. their competitors?

They have different upsides but both amount to the same thing. Which ever console you like, you just rationalize that Halozone is better than Resistance: Gears of Man or vice versa.

Not sure how being Blu-Ray helps Killzone 2 outperform other shooters. My impression was that the single-player was fine, but I missed the character-switching mechanic of the first game. Motion sensing is pretty pointless UNTIL you get a sniper rifle, then it's *awesome.* It's the perfect way to tweak a shot. I also like the fact that the guns sound like, you know, guns? Too many games have sissy little boof boof sound effects in place of actual gunshots. Enemy AI is pretty smart, too.

However, without the character switching, it is still, at its core, a "typical" shooter. It's a very well done typical shooter, but still typical. Is it enough to get a console for? Eh, I dunno. It might *help.*

Some people, who either can't afford it or simply don't want to spend the money on it, will continue to bash the PS3 needlessly because if they belittle it they won't feel like they are missing out on any kind of special experience. I'm not saying everyone is this way, but many of them are. Many folks, like myself, have experienced both and prefer one over the other, but there is no denying that there is another group who goes onto gaming sites just to share their sour grape stories.

I'm not saying that to be a dick, it's just how it is. I believe that that is the whole reason for the fanboy wars. I try to stay out of things, but I have to step in here and say that both the PS3 and the 360 are wonderful, unique experiences. If you don't have one or the other, you ARE missing out on certain unique things about the systems, but that's just life. Get over it.

I see it at every site. People spamming the comments with negativity over every other system, just to feel like they aren't missing out. Gets old.

Not terribly interested. Firstly, I don't lack for Shooters on the 360. Halo 3, CoD 4, Gears of War 2 are all triple A titles. So I don't really need to get Killzone 2 for a superior FPS experience, even if it is possibly better.

Secondly, no game is worth £300. I'd like to get a PS3 at some point, but given my student life, £300 is a huge chunk out of my budget. And I do like eating, you know! I look forward to the PS3 being cheaper though, mainly so I can play Valkyria Chronicles. (I still don't understand why that game is an exclusive. It's made by Sega!)

Why do these discussions only get lengthy in comments when it's someone from Sony making the marketing/advertisement statement and not Microsoft?

Anyway, no way in hell are they impacting the Halo/Gears of War crowd. While there are a good number of PS3s out there, the 360 rules the North Americas where the highest number of people buy games and play online.

They're not saying people will buy PS3's to play Killzone, (some will though) they're saying that it will get errorbox users to have a go on a PS3, perhaps a mate's PS3 or something. I know my errorbox using mates were pretty blown away by Killzone.

If you had two console choices....

1) DVD console, cutting edge games, reliable, everything you need "in the box," free online.

2) A VHS / CD console, extortionate peripherals, subscription online, tonnes of generic games with a couple of gems and a couple of overhyped shit stains (Halo, looking at you)

Which would you go for? Specially being as though most games are out on both. For now at least, until games get too big for the VHS / CD console.

It seems people totally ignore the fact that the errorbox is at the end of it's formats life. DVD is a dying breed. 40gig games are ALWAYS going to be simply better than 5gig games.

Simple as.

errorbox is the past, PS3 is the future.
