Killzone 2: Then and Now

Killzone 2: Then and Now photo
     Killzone

[Hey all. Ted put together this really awesome comparison post in the community blogs right after the Sony press conference. I thought you'd all like to take a look at it, so enjoy another episode of "Community Blog Masterpiece Theatre." Dave and Jim are wearing their monocles just for it. - DMV]

Hurrah, it is Killzone 2. You all know the story, right? They showed off a video at E3 of 2006 and said it was real, and then admitted that it was prerendered. Blah, blah, blah. So here we are at E3 of 2007 and they are showing off some new video so I put together a few photos comparing the Killzone of last year and the Killzone of this year.

*update* I changed the photos a bit. These should be a bit higher quality, should be. Also, I had the one shots labeled as E3 2006, the video was actually from E3 of 2005 so I changed that as well.

It would've had a better impact if they had never shown the original trailer.

I wasn't all that impressed with the showing this year...hopefully the final product will sway me.

Good work Ted. Deserves Front Page if you ask me. Like Sean, I think they're pretty close.

Brilliant, thank you. I suppose you can see the difference in quality between them, the flame pictures are the best indication of this... but I think the gameplay trailer is much more appealing. I'm sure this is intentional; draw us in with pretty graphics and then hit us with something more or less as impressive as the CG trailer but more enticing.

I'm not too into the idea of Killzone 2. GT Countdown said that Killzone was the most anticipated game of E3 but I don't care that much, I don't have the same sense of excitement. This new trailer was still interesting, but in all honesty, I don't see why I should be filled with a false hype. It looks okay.

Obviously the game could never look as good as the prerendered video that they showed, but I still think that the game is very impressive, visually. A lot of the textures and models looks extremely good. I think the biggest differences between the old and new videos are particle effects on the fire and explosions and whatnot. It is also interesting to see the difference between the other little things like the aircraft, uniforms, and the gun.

The biggest difference is in the flames, obviously, but you can see small differences in the textures on the weaponry and environments. But overall I think they came much closer to the E3 '05 video than most, myself included, expected.

wow... ive been watching all the trailers and sony press conference on g4tv.com i just finished downloading the mgs4, lair, and killzone 2 trailers in .mp4 format. they look 10x better and the color is so lively. you need to definitely check this out! Killzone 2 seriously looks A LOT BETTER! f the Gametrailers HD kz2 trailer. youll see many things you cant see in any of these online trailers. the color REALLY stands out.

The difference is obviously in the contrast (if the thing ran on the Xbot, it would look a lot more similar to the CGI trailer - we've seen this before, it's why all multiplatform games are previewed on the Xbox - PS3 has that "bleached" look).

Quite honestly, it is less particles, but the rest is damn near identical.

It's quite a feat. I was expecting a piece of shit.

The game does look very good, but I don't think it looks better than something like Halo 3, or Assassins Creed. But I think we are forgetting one thing. Gameplay is where it is at, and do any of you remember the first Killzone? Just because the game looks good doesn't mean it will play good. Killzone was supposed to be the Halo killer, and I don't think I ever saw a website give it a score above 7. So it may look good, but until we play it, we don't know what it will be like.

Ted, good call.

I was amazed at the teaser from the older E3 and to not have a concrete follow-up last year was a let down at the least.

Sony now comes with the demo/mostly-footage presentation and it wowed me real good. I liked the lightning towards the end, it was purty.

Phil Harrison: "OK, so thank you for coming out... Oh wait, we have one more thing to show you..."

Good job. Internet Matlocks everywhere are saluting you.

I for one loved the first Killzone as a "neutral" in the whole FPS wars...who cares what scores they got. I'm am very excited about this title and don't really care if the company tried to "swindle" gamers with pretty pre-rendered graphics. Hopefully the game will be as fun as it looks.

I think the main reason people don't like this series was that it was originally touted as the Halo killer. I think that immediately gave people (especially Halo fanboys) a bad taste in their mouths.

With all the pre-release pics we get of games these days, and considering the miserable game that was Killzone 1, its really hard to be impressed by any of this. It just looks average, by no means a killer app.

um is it just me or did anyone notice in the gameplay the heads getting popped by guns? I actually re-played sec by sec and all I can say it is as good as conan chopping heads and legs.

nevertheless its the gameplay that counts, my hopes are way up there. Yes in the past this was called Halo killer n didnt meet those expectations but Halo3 looks the same and now KZ2 looks like its aiming to reclaim that title. One thing KZ2 has that Halo doesnt, is popping body parts.

@Grim:
Yah, u r right. If that 2k5 trailer wasnt showed this would have make me shit my pants.

Ill give this 8/10 full erections for trying to make it look like the video. I can imagine Sony: "*cracking whip* YOU HAVE UNTIL E3 TO MAKE THIS SHIT LOOK LIKE THAT VIDEO YOU TOLD US WAS GAMEPLAY!"

Oh man... do you think Bungie have a reason to fear Killzone 2 in a "Damn it will look better than ours" way? Will we see a Sony Mp3 Player with a Killzone 2 theme?

How about a Killzone 2 themed underwear??? Think about it... the crotch could glow like the Helghast eyes and go from yellow to red based on the... er, "readiness" level.

As the Guinness commercials say... BRILLIANT!

Well, I don't think KZ2 have anything special... You can see such graphics easily on pc, and in other fps games... Well, okay it's currently the best looking ps3 game, but it's only shader modell 3.0 and nothing special.

Just imagine what can people do with sm4.0 and the power of the g80... When there will be true dx10 games out, KZ2 will look lame...

When all is said and done, I think Guerrilla did good.

After the bullshit high expectations set by the 2005 trailer, for them to actually come out with something that impresses people is a note worthy acheivement.

Still remains to see how it plays.

All contrast and chroma issues aside, (partially the fault of the person capturing the images, because the video looks much better than these images) I think the graphics look great.

The graphics look great, but not E3 2005 great. The E3 2005 trailer had things that looked like realtime raytracing, better fire, volumetric coulds that didn't use the orient to camera trick etc. Still, it looks great.

the main difference is the sharpness theres alot of glow and bloom and all that jazz whuch allows things to look better on low resolutions but at super high resolution bloom and all that jazz doesnt add as much ,screens just need a better contrast ratio anyone up for some 1,000,000:1?

Can't see much difference on these smal pics... just saw the trailer via PSN and I think this time it's real time and it looks not bad at all.
