Killzone 2 sells 20,000 launch copies in Japan photo

Japan may not be known for its love of first-person-shooters, but it seems that PS3 exclusive Killzone 2 is helping our friends in the East to buck cultural stereotypes. According to reports, Guerrilla's excellent sequel has sold 20,000 copies in its first day. Not bad for such a Western game.

The last PS3 exclusive FPS, Resistance 2, sold 33,000 in its opening week, so it would seem that KZ2 is almost certain to surpass Sony's last big shooter. While this is a very respectable situation for Killzone 2, Capcom's Monster Hunter for the Wii managed to put it to shame, bringing 92,000 sales to the table on the same day. Still, it's Monster Hunter, it's the Wii and it's Japan. I doubt Sony's surprised.

It's been a good week for the PS3 in its homeland. Around 60,000 consoles were sold, due in no small part to the Blu-ray release of Advent Children and its precious Final Fantasy XIII demo. The numbers are showing that the PS3 has become Japan's biggest selling console in 2009 thus far. It only took a number of years for the hits to roll in!

jk lol, I can't imagine seeing jp players playing a FPS... It's like watching a NA football player play with a barbie doll... just doesn't make sense.

power-glove: Not especially, that's just one of the songs on our car playlist. It seemed inappropriate, so I used it.

I played some Killzone 2 after I got back home from the bars last night and noticed players with moon speak names.

I'm sure this is important somehow :p

I find it funny that we follow how well Western games do in the east.

Sony already had its shock when Monster Hunter 3 was announced to release on the Wii instead of the PS3.

I still hope a port comes to the PSP though.

Cool, now my KZ2 playing time will have moonspeak from headset wearing Japanese, blaring out of the speakers. ;)

We talk about videogames. Let's not pretend any of it's important. ;-)

Is 20,000 a good amount of launch copies sold? Yes? No? Maybe?

Obviously, only selling 20k is terrible for any largely hyped AAA title during its launch in any territory.

However, when you factor in that this is Japan and its mad hate for FPS western-developed titles, then any FPS that can even sell 1 copy is quite an amazing accomplishment.

those are good # considering Japan is usually FPS no-mans land.

I hate to seem like a troll, but it is hard to know if these numbers are "good" or "bad" (if there is such a thing for sales figures from the consumer perspective). In order to get some perspective, here are the first week sales numbers for the Japanese releases of some competitors western-developed FPS games:

Gears of War: 33,212
Halo 3: 58,672

I would assume 20k+ on the first day would let KZ2 easily surpass these Xbox 360 exclusives in Japan.

But whats the relationship between how many Xbox 360's are in Japan vs PS3's?

I thought they *just* broke 1 million 360 units in Japan. I am more interested in the ratio than amount.

Still I wonder why Japanese gamers dislike FPS so much?

Well i won't speak for the Japanese but will try to explain why I don't like FPS so much. I do not see my character and therefore cannot see him/her in action, henceforth do not feel as attached to the protagonist as i do in 3rd person mode. Call me narrow minded, that's fine, but if i had to see all my movies or read comics from a FP perspective i would go insane, especially with this new fondness for shaking the camera in hollywood, which also gets me as nauseous as playing FPS games. Its not that i do not like them, i do, but i just prefer the 'other' and here is my bullshit presumption, i think the japanese feel the same way about their games.

sorry. One last thing.

FPS are great when played multiplayer (goldeneye), because then i can just be myself and compete, i guess that means i lack an imagination, when it comes to playing FPS alone. But would you say you prefer FPS single campaigns or the multiplayer parts more BrainLazy?
