Killzone 2 patch adds 'high precision' controls photo

When Killzone 2 was first released, many players bitched about the control system, complaining that they weren't responsive enough for their twitchy fingers. Those players can rejoice with the arrival of Patch 1.27, and the new "High Precision" control option that should satisfy their demands.

"When this option is switched on, it makes the analog sticks more responsive to small movements," explains multiplayer lead designer Eric Boltjes. "Turned off, the controls behave exactly as they did before the patch. It’s not a radical overhaul of the control system, so the layout and the ‘weight’ of the controls remain the same."

Still, a lot of us here at Guerrilla really enjoy the new High Precision option, so we’ve decided to switch it on by default for new players. Existing Killzone 2 players will have the option turned off by default after patching – we wouldn’t want to force a sudden change to the controls on you!"

The patch makes it a lot easier to find friends when looking for a game, with squads now being kept together over multiple games. Those playing in Skirmish mode also have the option to unlock badges now. Team balancing has been given an overhaul, with players able to switch factions if their team is outnumbering the other, and any players spawning from a Tactician's grenade will not be blessed with temporary invulnerability anymore.

The most appreciated bit of balancing, however, is the fact that the Goddamn Assault Class is having its armor reduced from 100 HP to 50. I'm sure it'll still be overpowered, but any weakness is a welcome weakness.

I highly disagree there Magnalon.. I did NOT buy this game after playing the demo. The controls were slow, unresponsive. Even worse than the first Killzone. An FP shooter that plays in a fast manner, as Killzone 2 does, should have fast controls, like the Call of Duty games for instance.

This patch, just may make me give this game another chance.

daggers. I'm going to suck at this game now. Like every other FPS I play.

Which is to say, I'm going to be stuck at Engineer and Medic for maximum effectiveness.

Oooooh I really don't now what to do now. As for the last 2-3 weeks I've been playing KZ2 A LOT. And I got used to the controls where 4 months ago I hated them.

Now I don't know whether to try this out or not, I don't want to change. Also when is this update coming out as I've been on KZ all day and no update so far.

@Magnalon: I don't see how you can blame this on Halo fans, considering it's another slow paced shooter. Neither of these games are twitch like Quake.

Jim, I just finished the campaign (eff that last battle in its face), I'm totally up to play some multiplayer some time.

I don't care about the controls but the rest is pretty cool.

Jakysan you shouldn't talk like your opinion is a fact. Because for me (and a shitload of others) the controls weren't slow, unresponsive or anything like that. And not worse than the first Killzone. Whatever you mean by that. I think (see, that's the way to state your opinion) the controls matched the game perfectly. I don't want to make no goddamn 360 degrees turn in the blink of an eye. Those dudes are heavy as fuck and so are the controls. A match made in heaven.

I've gotten used to them, but I still don't like them, so I'll turn on High Precision and see if I can snipe that way.

I'm going to kill all of you wankers...I mean, Helgast.

Please let me map buttons GG, please.

I liked the controls but I guess the bitching by the twitch crowed was too much, well whatever more people for me to shoot, and keeping the group together means me and all the other dtoiders can see the beauty of a blood covered helgan ( at the expense of the other team).

unrelated(sort of) - adapt the heaviness of the controls to bioshock 2. Seriously I dont want to play as a big daddy floating around at 20 mph who can whip around in a split second

Good news, although I get by just fine with the controls the way they are now. Never did I think to throw my controller because it was getting in my way, the only thing that gets in my way are the mass numbers of other players I kill. If I can tear myself away from inFamous for a bit I'll give the new controls a go and see if I like them. But I forsee myself switching them back to the way they were before the patch. Is Killzone's multiplayer fast paced? Yea somewhat, but its not meant to be a twitch fest like Quake or Unreal.

The small invulnerable time when spawning from a spawn grenade always upset me a little so that's a nice change. Also, if the small assault armor nerf makes the assault aholes switch to another class I'm all for that.

Wait, so I could maybe get my flybot to maybe kill people and get my medal? Win.

Also, Assault should get a machine gun to spawn with, even if it is a shitty one. Never understood why they're limited to spawning with ordinance style weapons only, which end up being dickbags suicide rocketing non-stop or the Assault class in general is locked out from being fun. (Yeah, I really don't like the grenade launcher.)

I find it hilarious that some people see fit to bitch because the developers implemented alternate controls that they're not even being forced to use.

The assault rifle already was the most powerful gun in the game, and now with the assault class losing heath, less people will be abandoning that weak, easy to kill class, and will be switching over to the assault rifle. Game just get a little harder. :)

"The most appreciated bit of balancing, however, is the fact that the Goddamn Assault Class is having its armor reduced from 100 HP to 50."

As an Assault Class player, I do not appreciate this at all Jim. You might appreciate it, I don't. 50 seems too steep. I would have settled for a decrease to 75. The 100 armor wasn't a whole lot to begin with. I just dropped just as easily with a shotgun or a rifle. All it took was that one extra shot, but I still dropped as easily as the schmuck next to me. That was the whole reason for playing Assault was the armor. Everything else came extra. Now my favorite class seems really gimped.

I wouldn't be so disappointed if it was dropped to 75. A drop to 75 would still be enough armor for an advantage but not enough to survive an upclose rocket blast to someones face so that stupid shit wouldn't happen as much. No matter how much armor you take away from the Assault, people are going to hate the assault because they have rocket launchers. It would have been better if they changed the main weapon to the heavy machine gun.

@ Vanill Gorilla

I don't use the main weapons that are given to Assault. The magnum is a good enough weapon until I can scavenge me a good but more fair weapon. I've only used the rocket to destroy bots or when enough people are grouped up that justifies to sinking so low as killing with an RPG. But I do have to say, the Machine Gun feels like a perfect fit for the Assault. Always enjoyed using it whenever I find one.

It was just a hassle if you wanna squad up with your buddy, but can't change teams and have to rely on chance on the next map change to fall in the same team

@brainderailment..
while, i dont think this control option will cause any problems (seems like all it does is allow for more minute movement), it wouldn't be without reason to complain about a control option if it allowed you to turn faster.

The reason for this being that killzone is a more realistic, slower turn speed gives advantage to the flankers, and actually makes the game more tactical. Not just because players cannot about face to face their attacker as quickly, but it keeps them from constantly surveying their surroundings, and allows for one to sneak up better.

@Platypus

Multiplayer is one thing. But in Single player, better controls could be used. If someone designed a car that has a 1/4 second delay and said it was the 'weight' of the car, would you say, "OH YES REALISM!"

Bad controls are bad.

I mean, they want money right?

i never had a problem with the "slow" controls and dont get what the complaining is about, not all games are the made same ya know. and i am a huge time splitters fan and love faster shooters sometimes. but it just seems fitting for killzone.

maybe ill have to try out the new controls in skirmish ,before i try it online, as i try to get the rest of the secondary badges that i have been working so hard to acquire but never seem to get.

I liked controls. Now, people on the field will not be on equal grounds. Of course there's choice, but now you'll know people are using different controls.

Why not allow keyboard / mouse control as well? I'm serious, there could be keyboard / mouse only servers. It would atract a LOT of PC crowd. Hear me out sony. Instead of making controllers play differently, just give us some keyboard mouse functionality. Most my pc fps addict friends are not buying a console because of this..

since killzone 2 i feel like i'm a dumb magical flying camera (like a flying turret in bioshock) in every other fps...

killzone's ruins my perception of team fortress - cod 4 - and even bioshock

i hope there will be a sense of playing a human in modernwarfare2

Are there still people out there who think every FPS should control the same way, and refuse to adapt to the game they're playing?

Ridiculous! I got used to the original controls because it was all part of the package, adding to the immersion of it all. It doesn't make a lot of sense to force the player to waddle slowly, then allow their point of view to fly all over the place.

Had no problem with the controls, I actually really liked them. They made the game feel a bit different to every other FPS.

But mostly, because they didn't make everything lightning and twitchy, they sort of developed you into taking things slowly and making the most out of every action you took and consider things you wouldn't normally in other FPS games where you could just point and shoot an enemy away in the blink of an eye.

It seems as if the majority will much prefer the new controls, but to me the old controls were good while they lasted.

I got used to the orgignal contols, so this ain't a biggie for me. It was refreshing having to actually learn how to play effectively and how to play with the controls, as opposed to just jumping in and the game becoming a 'twitch' shooter.

Hpwever, if the new controls fit in line with my favorite shooter of all time, COD4, well then I guess I'll just use that from now on. Like Brain said, is really is a game with magnificent contols on a console. Nothing else beats it, IMHO. :)

Best patch ever. Not sure about badges in Skirmish (I know I'm already plotting how to get all the badges easily, which isn't good) but the boosts/nerfs to sentries/assault can only be good things.

Not going to bother commenting on the new controls, other than to say gamers are a bunch of whining pussies.
