Killzone 2 hype is worth 2 million quid photo

I've been waiting weeks for Sony to give me an excuse to use "Shillzone," and I knew the publisher wouldn't let me down. Killzone 2 is preparing for a full-on hype offensive, as a ludicrous £2 million is being sunk into a UK ad campaign to promote the PlayStation 3 exclusive.

The huge investment will see Killzone 2 appearing on TV, cinema screens and Web sites across the nation. Support from game stores is a given, and other marketing avenues are expected to be filled with orange-eyed attention grabbing.

Sony is obviously confident, and with the first reviews giving Guerrilla's FPS nothing but glowing praise, one can hardly blame the publisher. The PS3 has been waiting for a game to rival the high-profile exclusives of other systems for a long while, and so have we.

Hope it pays off, Sony. This is a risky time to be spending that much cash.

Well considering the current state of the pound, £2 million aren't that much.

I'm still waiting for the demo before buying the game though.

By "a long while" do you mean since MGS4?

linux:

No, not "The PS3 has no games." It's "The PS3 hasn't had a high profile chart buster game yet."

Au temps pour moi Jim. but that's not true either, mgs4 was big too.

Hopefully this gets the PS3 some love. True, PS3 hasn't had any "chart busters" yet, but in my opinion they have a better lineup than the others.

Most of my friends are xboxers, but I haven't seen an exclusive game that stands out to me that screams "I must buy this console so I can have that". PS3 has had several for me so far. Is it crappy marketing or something? Do I have different taste in games than the rest of the world? Dunno.

@LinuxGuy

Okay, you have a fair point... until you point at Gears of War 2 and Halo 3. Face it, kitten. Resistance was not a competitor, it was a decent selling franchise. MGS saga is over. Sony needs Killzone 2 to go big.

Now cry about "Teh Bias" on a Mortal Kombat news story.

About time there was something I can point and gawp at to my misses during Corrie's ads.

Well done Sony, finally pulling the advertising finger out.

I think this could be my most highly-anticipated game ever.

@linuxguy, MGS4 didn't sell shit. There have been no chart busters... It's a fair point. Mainly, because Sony doesn't let anybody know it has games coming out anymore.

Linux:

MGS4 was not a blockbuster. You can argue that it's a fucking fantastic game, and a critical darling. I agree on both counts. I love MGS4. But let's not pretend it was to the PS3 what Halo 3 was to the 360, or Wii Fit was to the Wii.

Fact -- the PS3 has fantastic games, but it hasn't found its identifying blockbuster game yet.

I agree with you all but if you look at it the playstation brand never had a defining franchise (mario/zelda for nintendo, halo for microsoft) it had a lot.
but nowadays it's just sad to see what it has come to.
I hope for sony they learn from their mistakes and make a kickass ps4

@ Linuxguy: Jim is right. MGS4 was an amazing game and it did sell very well, but it's sales do not compare to games like Gears of War and Halo.

When it sells like 8 million copies like a Halo game, then we'll talk.

well I hope KZ does well (I'm certainly buying it), but I don't want to see KZ3,4,5 for the next 3 years either like rockband/guitar hero and call of duty.

gotta agree with Jim on this blockbuster games thing. mgs4 sold around 4million copies. i think blockbuster needs over 5+million. mgs4 is an amazing game but lets get back to point here, kz2 needs a goddam badass superbowl commercial and people will finally see it who aren't the gaming enthusiastics like us. halo had a superbowl commercial and it was a cg. kz2 can do one all ingame and still look better than the halo one. this is what sony needs and if they fuck this up they can expect less than stellar sales again for what could be their greatest fps this gen.

Good, Sony should have marketed MGS4, LBP, Uncharted, and many other PS3 exclusives alot better. BUT it did not, instead it gave us Home. I dont understand, but eather way, Killzone 2 looks fantastic and I cant wait to play it.

I defrinatly agree with your last sentence. With Sony seeing was it a 94% drop in profits one can only hope this pans out for them.

I agree Sony needs a blockbuster game, but don't equate total game sales to how good the game is. Would you do the same for a movie, say Paul Blart, being the #1 grossing movie 2 weeks in a row means its obviously a top notch movie right? I'm not saying games that sell like mad are bad, quite the contrary, but don't let that be the only reasoning to call it a good game.

Also, what total number of sales do you need to call a game a "blockbuster?"

The point is, Sony could really do with its "Wii Fit" or its "Halo." It needs a game that can get into the charts and stay there. It also needs a game people will play over and over. MGS4 was great, but people rarely talk about it now, while Halo 3 continues to be played. LBP has replay value, but it failed to put the PSN on the map.

Meanwhile, the opposition has had multiple chart toppers which have helped shaped each console's identity. The PS3 is still rather faceless. It needs games that put it on the map.
PixelJunky's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/30/2009 11:16

The PS3 is faceless because you guys don't hype its amazing games like you do Halo and Gears. Gears, from what I've heard, is a mess online with glitches galore. Yet gaming journos gave it a free pass and gave it 10 ratings. Whereas every PS3 game gets knit-picked to pieces.

Uncharted, Resistance, LBP, and Motorstorm are all amazing gaming series. But since the Playstation crowd has such a diverse gaming preference, unlike the SHOOTER centric 360 crowd......it's hard for any one PS3 game to chart like a Halo/Gears, especially with a smaller install base in the US.

I am glad to see Jim warm up to his PS3, and seeing his excitement for a game like KZ2 makes me even more excited about it.

It's a strong system, but doesn't have its identity in order..yet. Other than being the super-reliable-do-everything-wonderbrick. It really does need its own Halo/Gears though.

That being said, personally, it's the most satisfying gaming system I've ever owned.

Dimly is the cancer that is killing gaming.
