I must confess: until now, I have only had a passing interest in Killzone 2. The immense hype for the title, along with Guerrilla’s admissions of touching up their game’s screenshots -- twice -- has made me extremely suspicious, and the apparent lack of any palpable story screams “just another good-looking gray/brown FPS.” However, the “Helghan” trailer above finally provides me with a reason to give a damn.

In addition to all the graphically-intensive fighting on display, we’re finally given some semblance of a story -- and unless I’m reading into it too much, it sounds a lot like subtle political commentary on the Iraq War. I was reminded of Anthony’s brilliant article from last year regarding Call of Duty 4; I highly recommend checking it out. The voice-over talks about how the army’s commanding officers told the foot soldiers that their superior weaponry would quickly blow away an already-demoralized enemy, one who could only put up “moderate to low resistance.” Sound familiar? Remember Operation: Shock and Awe? How about the woefully premature “Mission Accomplished” banner?

Well, “someone forgot to tell the Helghast.” The trailer also features some inspiring oration from a man that I assume is the Helghan leader, Scolar Visari. He was voiced by Brian Cox in the original game, but I can’t quite tell if Cox is reprising his role this time around, or if Guerrilla has merely hired someone who sounds a lot like him. Either way, Killzone 2 is now officially on my radar -- it looks like Resident Evil 5 is going to have some tough competition for shooter sales next February. Head over to the game’s official Web site for more.

As an aside, Guerrilla is currently running a closed beta for Killzone 2, and I’m in on it. I can’t say anything, though; they’re super cereal about confidentiality. So for now, I’ll just hold it over you folks.

I played this at Eurogamer Expo last week.

It played like a dream, I did a blog. I like to write, also shoot Helghan scum. It's a great mix.

I'll pique your interest.

This trailer still doesn't do anything for me. Maybe it'll pull a Call of Duty 4, and by that I mean I'm just going to wait until it comes out, and if it's actually phenomenally good and everybody on my list is playing it for months after release, I'll check it out.

CG cutscenes only carry me so far but I'm pretty hopeful for this one, I gotta say.

I want more in-game vids before I get serious wood for this, but so far so good.

Not a bad trailer at all. I'm not sure if I'll be bored of R2 by then or not though.

@bart999
Those are in-game graphics.

I really want to get into this beta.

If your going to try to compare it to something I would more liken it to WW2 Panther counterstrike blitzkrieg. I sure as hell wouldn't compare the Helghast to some people who can barely aim.

@bar999 Most of the recent ones are in game. In fact I can't think of any that aren't. Hell even the one where they arrive on a helo pad of some kind is in game. You actually land on that thing and move on.

I'm rocking that beta and I must say. It's even better than I had expected. That's almost impossible. Ever since the first game I'm waiting on this one. A visit to the Guerrilla Games studio made waiting for it almost impossible. It plays like a dream, it looks like a dream. In fact, someone pinch me because I think I'm in a dream!

I got into the beta a couple days ago and am definitely very impressed. I'm with Tekeshi, It's hard to explain, but everything just feels so right. Guerrilla has really done a great job.

(Hopefully I'm not breaking any NDA's)

@Shin_Ra,
In the first game you could play as a guy named Hakha and he was a bald helgan. All the other questions I don't remember or don't know.

Unlike in real life however, the good guys probably beat the helghast and wins the day in kill zone 2. Amirite?

Yes, yes. Very nice. Gameplay? From what I've seen it resembles yet another shooter and that hasn't changed thoughout its development. I'm awaiting some hands-on reviews to see what people have to say that potentially seperates it from the scores of other shooters currently available and also on the horizon.

This looks really good I may pick it up...later.

I'm just too burned out of "brown and grey shooters" I'm seriously craving some color. Also money's kinda tight so for now this is gonna have to wait.

@Xhumation: Again, you've got a while. It won't be out until February 2009.

Good trailer, but the "semblance of a story" may be only that...something designed just to make a compelling trailer. Do you really think the in-game story will reflect the same ideas? I kinda doubt it. Killzone 2 still has a lot to prove.

I was hesitant at first too Samit. Hearing how they touched up those videos made me somewhat salty. But hearing now how much people are digging the beta, and the new, hopefully untouched, videos its definatly back on my radar for sure. Its looking like a day 1 purchase more and more, but I'm still somewhat hesitant.

i love how video game trailers are more intense and better done than some hollywood blockbuster movies. :)

@Corak, from what I see in this video, the only thing that doesn't look like the real thing is the dark ring around the outside edges of the video (the simulation of a camera lens). Look on YouTube, people have been posting beta gameplay footage.

Every single time I play the beta it feels like I'm in one of the trailers. It really really looks that good. If Dtoid want to do an interview I'll be glad to walk over to the Guerrilla Games headquarters. I can almost smell the game from my apt.

Please, please tell me that you're being sarcastic when you say this is subtle? They might as well be shouting "HAY GUYZ, LOOK HOW RELEVANT WE ARE! AREN'T WE EDGY!?"
