Killzone 2 developers pull a fast one (again): Admit touching up screenshots photo

If you thought that Killzone 2 had been looking too good to be true, then it's quite possible you were correct in your assumption. Developer Guerilla has admitted that the last batch of screenshots had been "touched up" to make them look better than they actually were. Bad form, you dirty boys. Bad, bad form.

Guerilla's Seb Downie made the confession on the official PS3 forums, trying to justify the misleading promotional material by saying the enhancements were only small:

They are only the tiniest bit touched up. Short answer is yes. Long answer is that there was a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major. Still very close to reality and it looks better in motion in my opinion.

Frankly, I think it's a pretty crappy stunt to pull on the people following this game. We'd already been lied to once before when the infamous "demo" footage for Killzone 2 a few years back turned out to be CGI, and now they're admitting to altering screenshots to make them look better. Touching up pictures may work for supermodels and pornstars, but when games are judged on how they actually look, this kind of underhanded behavior is not cool and not something any consumer should condone.

It's worrying how obsessed with the graphics Guerilla and Sony seem to be with Killzone games, to the point of lying about them. Might explain why the first one had such disappointing gameplay. Stop trying to wave your graphics-peen around and actually concentrate on making a good game, please.

Anyone who says every game company does this is just a comment bandwagon passenger. I'm sorry but not every game company doctors screenshots and says "THIS IS ALL PURELY IN GAME". If some of you don't think this is a serious issue then get the fuck out of my game industry. Seriously. This is the kind of shit that has been pulling down the industry in releasing half assed crap titles since 2003.

Look closely at those two screenshots.. the difference is absolutely stunning. The fact that they would touch it up THAT much is disgusting. They took a screenshot that depicted a very faded lighting system to a screenshot that seems to have near real world lighting density. I don't know why people would think changing a screenshot that depicts the visuals of the game and making it look better than it should is an alright thing to do. Its piratically false advertisement.

And the fact that some companies feel like they have the need to do such a thing is rather disgusting and its that kind of mentality that has been lingering around the industry far too long now and being one of the many reasons for mediocre titles these days.

Lol, I just love having an excuse to use the word "Bullshot" in polite conversation.

Also, bullshots.

Seriously though, Killzone wasn't that bad. But it was still bad. I can't see myself ever getting Killzone 2, so I don't even bother reading the crap on it anyways. Most of it is deeply rooted in fanboy drool, anyways.

What's mine is yours, and if you dont care about it, then gtfo. i'm sick of people thinking that lieing about a games mechanics / visuals is no big deal. Way to miss my argument there and focus on something else.

Dyslixec's got a point. When you think a game looks that good and then get the game and it not being that good, I'd be pissed.

We'll its not just on a games visuals either. Its the fact that they feel they can alter some aspect of the game and have it appear to be something its not whether it be visually or within the gameplays mechanics, or what have you. I mean if they can easily feel free to alter screenshots to lie about the games visuals whats to stop them, or any other company that uses these tactics, to lie about the mechanics of their game.

Its a lazy tactic, and its very sleazy, now not everyone does it, but that still shouldn't give others the right to deceive their customers with false claims / advertisement. And its been happening WAY too much over the past several years.. pretty much since 02/03.

I took some screenshots from the newest video of Killzone 2 that I could find and am comparing it to the new screenshots that have been doctored. They aren't exactly the same on frame and everything, but I think you will be able to see a difference between them.

If they show real world lighting, and it's not real world lighting then it's false advertisement.
Done.

bullshots....hehe...

faking images and toting it as gameplay is pretty stupid. The original Killzone2 E3 trailer i can understand as in the games industry the developers make a demo video that has the look and feel of what the gameplay is going to be like. then they make the game around that original reel. but to outright edit images is just stupid.

I don't understand how anyone can respond with the "no big deal" argument. This is false advertising, which is illegal. We, the consumers are the ones who are getting the raw end of the deal being sold a product that is different from these "screenshots".

Making a trail with no actual gameplay footage was one thing...the issue was that they were calling it in engine gameplay back then. Moving past that, if I am understanding that last photo comparison some of the in-game looks pretty fantastic, and some not so much. All the doctored shots look sweet though.

lol qwerty you took my gaming industry comment too seriously.. you know the whole 'gtfo my internet's' yeah.. stick it with that.

Falsifying information and focusing on false advertisement is not exactly a wise choice in any business.. and some of us will get high and mighty over it especially when some of us are working in the industry and see this shit happening. This isn't just about doctoring photos, its the fact that this mentality is being supported and ignored. The only reason this shit continues to happen is because nobody challenges it.

Like I said before, if they can so easily half ass a product to the point where they have to doctor a screenshot to make it look better. Whats to stop them from doing that to the games mechanics itself. It's happened before, and its been happening far too often lately.

It comes down to this; Sony needs to learn how to fucking stop lying to us. I don't hate Sony because they disappointed me with the PS3, I hate them because they constantly LIE to me and everybody else and they treat us like we are in 2nd grade. Every single thing that Sony has tried to get away with, they have gotten caught, and they will continue to get caught.

Sony has been in a reactive state for the last two years now and it has been hurting them A LOT. This is just one more example of how full of shit Sony is these days. I could write a whole list of things that they lied about in the last 2 years but that would take me a couple of hours so I won't.

I just want everybody to realize that doctoring screenshots is a big deal. Even though they have to use a ridiculously powerful computer to run Crysis at max to take their screenshots, they are at least taking actual screenshots and not doctoring them afterwards. doctoring screenshots is not a common practice. If a company wants to show off how pretty a game is, then show us what it actually looks like and don't try to pawn off some shooped images as in game screenshots, that is bullocks.

this is just getting ridiculous. it shows they don't have confidence in their product. unless they are pulling the super secretive card. where they can't show people anything a'la FFXIII. your game isn't the secret to the universe. we all know your making it. 1920 x 1080 screen gabs should be enough to do the game justice. also, enough with the same fucking level. it's been how long now? i have only good things to say about the first game, which i think is very under-rated. i can't understand why they are having so much trouble showing an honest image. classic ps3 pr here. just a whole lot of bull until the product is out, and then it under-performs and they say , why? not our fault. no, it is your fucking fault. show real shit. people will buy it.

@namelessted. The video/screen comparison is pretty good, but it just proves that the game is totally capable of doing the lighting as featured in the "guy jumping over the rail" shot that this article was based on. In your second image, the lighting and colors look like the right, 'shopped half of the rail image. if it can do it in the outdoor scene with alot more stuff going on, why wouldn't it actually be doing it in the more sparse in door scene?

Given that, I'm inclined to believe the game will come out somewhere between the two. That's between soft lighting awesome and really hard lighting awesome. So awesome. Check. Now it just has to be on the shelves.

I work in the game industry as a level artist and this technique of releasing screenshots that have been touched up is VERY common. A very different type of deception than what was done with the original Blur Studios fake video. Theres a big difference between completely deceiving the viewer and touching up on presentation. Not to say I think its a good practice, I'm merely saying its a common practice.

Eh, people are making a bigger deal of this than it actually is. Most of the media released of killzone is real. So what if those "new" ones we got recently are touched up. The videos are real, and the game has actually been demoed live.

wait until you play it or see it with your own eyes to judge. this is nothing compared to what activision did with spiderman 2 on the pc. they advertised the ps2 version and gave pcs a lame jittery game that could have played on a ps1. a little color correction is forgivable. i've seen beautiful screens ruined by screencaps first hand over and over. As for the polish, show me THE SAME screen before and after touch-ups, not just a similar screen, then i'll judge how much they actually changed it.

Food advertising is misleading, but those companies are selling a product that is prepared, and each of the millions is slightly different, they put together a hypothetical example of it. Video games are a Digital medium, and you can output a screenshot that is exactly the same content that shows on the end user's product. A screenshot is a direct output of the actual game, anything else is concept art or a render. Renders are fine, as long as they are portrayed as so.

The reason no legal action is involved yet is because our legislators don't understand jack shit about technology. Exhibit A: The internet is a series of tubes.

We all ate crow when we saw Killzone 2 in action at E3 07. Sony was ahead. Then they went and did this and put Killzone 2 back under the microscope.

Touching up a screen a little may happen from time to time, but these look like two completely different games.

Every person who just accepts this is contributing to the problem, not the solution. Quit being a moronic fanboy and stand up to Sony. ...stupid fanboys

Meh, I have CoD 4 and Resistance on my PS3, both of which are probably better FPSes than what this will turn out to be. I’ve convinced myself that the game can’t possibly live up to the insane hype it’s getting...this should knock it down a few pegs. Seriously, people: just because it’s an FPS or a shooter DOESN’T MEAN that the entire game has to feature various shades of gray.

It is bad, but honestly are any of us really that shocked? People have been doctoring photos for a long time, how else can Sharon Stone look attractive without an army of employees to photoshop her photos? This has been going on all over the place for a very long time, playboy, maxim, sports illustrated, and pretty much any magazine that publishes pictures of people. And if you think the women in any of those magazines look like that in real life without tons of makeup and proper lighting you are very naive. A number of them are hot yes, but so many others look as normal as your average cocktail waitress. I'm not saying its an excuse because its not, but it really shouldn't shock you.

I'm wondering how many other "photos" of games to be released have been doctored in some way but never got called on it?

It was obvious. This is common with everyone. You just never see anyone called out on it. It's all real beside the massive anti-aliasing/blurring. that's all. everything else looks the same as what we've already seen.
