Love it or hate it, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare started a whole new craze when it introduced "perks" to the series. A class system that brought multiplayer rewards might not be to the taste of some players, but I enjoyed it and I'm quite chuffed that it's coming to Killzone 2.
A diagram has been released that details Killzone 2's grading system, which has a variety of unlockable goodies for each rank in the game. For example, you can become a Lieutenant at 800 points, which unlocks the Engineer Badge, allowing you to earn the "Repair Specialist" distinction by fixing five vehicles. Earn that distinction eight times and you'll win a new ability, "Turret." Go on to achieve the "Turret Specialist" award eight times over and you'll then be allowed to take "Turret" and combine it with a new class.
Sounds needlessly complex, but it's a lot simpler once you see it all laid down in tasty diagram form. It actually looks a little deeper and more involved than Infinity Ward's baby, almost like Guerrilla combined CoD4 with a rudimentary Final Fantasy job system.
As silly and unwarranted as that comparison is, take a little look at the diagram provided. It looks like Killzone 2 players will have a lot of work to do.

We'll see how Killzone is set up. I'm hopeful that it won't fuck over newbs though. Like I say, when I was a noob in CoD4 I still got plenty of kills. Never understood the people who were like "this is so unbalanced!"
I wasn't too excited about Killzone 2 before but this kind of "leveling" system is like crack for me.
And you hush your mouth about TF2.
Also, picture and caption are dynamite Jim Sterling.
Well if it's a slow gain, the noobs have even longer to get involved without veterans being super powered, don't they?
Sounds grrrrrreat to me!
Only time will tell. :D
I imagine Jim now spends his Fridays in bars throwing glass bottles against fences that protect the performers on stage. Much like in Blues Brothers.
I'm really looking forward to the chance of a game with Jim though and Yojimbo! That rhymes.
@Yoj1mb0
Don't you mean 'I slack off in a battlefield on FNF'?
Old ass in the tall grass used to be your slogan in COD4 remember? :D
Weird.
Its a solid multiplayer anyway but add the level up system and its a sure winner!!
LIke i have said before, i hope this is a winner for the PS3, it needs some life in it!!
Interesting stuff, we'll see how off-putting it'll be to people who don't grind on release date. I'm not going to play the game, but I applaud the evolution of this innovation.
Didn't battlefront have a similar system?
Personally, I really hate any perks, leveling up, or anything like that in multiplayer. Just give me a list of hosts and let me play. I'm in the minority here, I'm sure, but my favorite online multiplayer system in recent memory was the first Gears of War.
@Valter
People credit Gears of War with the whole cover system stuff, but we know kill.switch did it first.
What did you say after that? I stopped listening to you.
Really, I did.
