Hot on the heels of their BAFTA win for F1 2010, Codemasters invited me to their offices in the middle of nowhere to speak to the development team behind their latest game, Operation Flashpoint: Red River; all week long Destructoid will be bringing you behind the scenes videos and interviews with the Flashpoint team.
This time I chat to Sion Lenton -- Creative Director,to find out how and why they picked Tajikistan, how the art team have worked to create a realistic environment, why playing with guns is a thing they now do at the Codemasters offices and of course, the importance of keeping it real while still making the game accessible.
Hollie Bennett is Destructoid's UK Community Manager and video producer/personality. She also the host of our British podcast, models, and will totally drink you under the table boys.

Congratulations, this is the first time you've seen a woman.
I hate developers who straddle the fence about making a game that is going to alienate most players but then at the same time trying to make it for everyone. It rarely ever works out for any party involved.

Have to be honest, the more I hear about Red River the less fussed I am about it. At a time when it's hard to not be burnt out on military shooters of all kinds, a game which seemingly features little more than a single campaign doesn't really appeal. I'm all for a more realistic experience in these games (though the fact it's got any kind of perk system rather nullifies this) and having nowt but a story/campaign mode works for many games, but the military shooter market is already so saturated that these things alone just don't cut it for me. I'm not even after yet another online competitive mode, just more than what they've talked about so far. The fact that they've done so much rsearch and are really trying to make this a much more realistic experience than other games is great but that alone only gets you so far. The more they talk about it, the less fun it sounds.
Also, microphone gain is your friend (within certain limits). Nearly every input device, and if not then certainly every recording device you can name, has an input gain control, somewhere. Comma.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
