Postponing Alpha Protocol might not have been the best move. It will exist in the same space as Mass Effect 2, a spectacular title that combined sharp shooting and core RPG mechanics into one tight, narrative-driven package. The last time we checked on Alpha Protocol, we heard something similar being promised.

Alas, it's been a long time since we've played the espionage RPG. But at least we have rather fresh-smelling footage to soothe some of our fears. Earlier this week, SEGA released yet another dev diary for the game, this time focusing on some of the gadgets and weaponry users will be employing to kill, stun, trap, or confuse foes. It looks good, but we'll definitely need this one in our hands to make sure it is as much.

That was the first Alpha Protocol video I've seen. I'm liking it. This will make me happy since I can't play Mass Effect 2 on anything right now.

This is the game I'm most excited for this year. Chris Avellone + secret agents + a dialog system that actually sounds exciting = oh god must play now.

Same space as Mass Effect 2.

I get it.

What fears do you have? It doesn't feel like the same release window, just the same year. I might just be a biased Obsidian fan but I haven't heard anything that concerned me about it so far. Mass Effect didn't change things so drastically that I wouldn't go back and play Kotor2 or Nwn2, either.

I'm really, really hoping this is good. Obsidian hasn't put out anything I've liked in a long while, but I still have a lot of respect for 'em and AP is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated titles.

How would forcing this game out the door last year have been a better move than postponing it? It's about time Obsidian gets the time to polish a game until it's done.

Oh hell yeah, phosphorous rounds. Israel's favourite illegal anti-civ weapon and my favourite to use in games that have them. Actually I just like anything that make the target run around screaming he's on fire.

This is the first 3rd person game I've been excited about since MGS4, huh.

Meh, it feels too action-ish shooter-ish for my taste.

Actually, their work on it came to a close before the delay. Whether than means polishing by an external company or sitting on a shelf collecting dust, I don't know.

Looks wicked, I'm thrilled they delayed it. It would have gotten lost in the shuffle. Early June, nothing is coming out, so it should get some attention from consumers.

It's got a few features that I wish were in ME2, like extensive weapon upgrades and stealth kills. Looking forward to finally getting this.

I remember being more excited about this than Mass Effect 2 last year. Now, I'm a little wary as to whether or not Obsidian can pull of something on par with ME2.

I still want this to be great, though.

I was so excited when I saw the first preview of this in Game Informer. I just want to finally get to play the darn thing.

people really shouldnt be comparing this to Mass Effect quite so much, imo - the similarities really arent *that* great, aside that they're both rpgs with a stronger focus on action.

from what i've seen, if people should be comparing this game with anything, it ought to be Deus Ex! one of the big selling points of Deus Ex was the ability to play through levels in a number of different ways, depending on what kind of protagonist you liked to play as. Alpha Protocol is absolutely about this, but Mass Effect... not really, since the level design (in both of them) was fairly linear and you just didnt have any skills not related to combat (minus, of course, dialogue skills). i gather you can go through Alpha Protocol as an absolute pacifist... this alone makes it into a rather different thing than Mass Effect.

(this isnt an attempt to bash Mass Effect, btw - at the very least, i quite liked the second one. just pointing out, the comparisons arent really especially apt).

Looks good. As long as it's not buggy, it should turn out great.

I dont know it doesnt look very good to me. The part where you slow down time and mark the places you shoot looked silly when he let all the shots fly. Especially after seeing how Red Dead Redemption is using a similar feature. But I do hope its turns out being good and hopefully postponing the game will give Obsidian time to work out all the technical problems they've had on working on previous titles.
