Okay, so we’re like a month late to the party, but this is way too cool not to share. Nvidia’s Tegra is a high end augmented reality device that lets users play videogames with everyday objects. In the case of this demo, the Tegra is pointed at a paper map and the Tegra displays a 3D version of the map.

To make things interesting, zombies are thrown into the mix and the player needs to shoot zombies to save civilians. The player will need to move all around the map in order to shoot the zombies and if things get crazy, you can use a piece of Skittles candy as a bomb.

What.

Yeah, so just grab a Skittle, put it on the map and shoot it. Orange Skittles act as a proximity bomb and green Skittles will explode after you shoot it two times.

Really random, but the whole thing just sounds awesome. There are a lot of things that the Tegra is able to do here and it’s just really exciting thinking of all the possibilities our future gaming holds.

Hit the break to check out the AR zombie action.

See, I can see that being a peculiar and/or great step for handhelds, but that guy had to move his entire body around a set board to do that, which kind of breaks down what I think handhelds are.

Crap. Now I'm really craving skittles. This is pretty amazing though.

That was awesome. It's just too bad you need a board to play the game, as it kind of kills the point of what a hand held console is supposed to be. Nonetheless, this is still amazing. Way better than Natal or Sony's motion shit (From what I've seen, this can actually be used for, I dunno, real gaming?).

and here I thought all the Tegra did was let us go a month without charging our handheld devices. part of the reason I plan to buy the zune HD

It would be awesome if the DSi would get some AR like that, might not be as smooth, but still.
Wasen't the ghostbusters game for the DS going to have some AR?

its a shame that the hardware is wired. could make it really annoying to have to keep untangling it from the table leg or your cat as you play.

Fantastic tech though. Looks fun which is the most important bit and seems to work pretty well. A 3D wheres wally/waldo could be fun. all the people moving around a 3D environment and you physically have to look around for wally/waldo. Or instead of a table mat with the map on it, you could have stickers all over your room which create AR enviroments. Or, a 3D space invaders shooter coming down from your ceiling? I really like the idea :D

@Havoc Fang: uh, isn't that exactly one thing handhelds are good for? If you ever played WarioWare: Twisted, then you'd know it's something that could only be done on a handheld. Same as this.

That was great, especially how the camera can recognize the Skittles are different from one another and then have different outputs for them. The game looks like it would get old pretty fast, but as a tech demo it was awesome. Just when you figure technology can't get any better and are scratching your head about which way the industry is going to go next...you get slapped in the face with something like this.

@Dester345: The gameplay certainly is only possible on a handheld, but it's not very mobile or portable, seeing as it requires a board. Granted, just because it's being played on a handheld doesn't mean it has to be portable, I can still see this having quite an appeal. Plus it only a proof on concept, certainly augmented reality could be extended to games that truly involve moving around the real world, which could make a morning subway trip that much more fun (and probably make the player look like a lunatic).

@Kingtobo

Having just read what you said, I can imagine that we will at some point get AR virals on street billboards or virals that you actually have to go out and find in cities. pretty cool concept :)
