Kids microwave cat, get banned from playing videogames ... wait, what? photo

I know some of you are sick of the "videogamers who do crimes" angle, but this one's just a bit too eyebrow-raising not to post. It involves a cat, a microwave and two teenagers who wanted to combine the former with the latter -- so they did. The relevance here (as if cat cooking wasn't worth mentioning in and of itself) is that the Alberta residents responsible for this cruelty have been banned from violent videogames for a year as part of their punishment. What?

"Two Alberta teenagers who killed a family's cat in a microwave - a crime that drew outrage from animal lovers around the world - have been banned by a judge from owning animals for at least two years.

They're also barred from owning or playing violent video games for the next year."

"According to court-ordered psychological assessments, video games were not found to have directly encouraged the boys' actions.

But barring their access to such games was nonetheless a recommendation put forward in the assessments."

In addition to the pet and game ban, the kids are being forced to undertake counseling with a forensic therapist and and will be under a curfew from 9pm to 6am every night. Thanks to the animal ban, the family of one of the teens now has to get rid of their dog, which they apparently bought while the boy was facing these charges. They get no jail time, but one teen has had to relocate to avoid the threats and outrage. Animal rights activists also vow to smash in some faces over this.

The cat, Princess, belonged to vacationing homeowners who had their house broken into by the boys. Princess was said to have been cooked to death, while screaming, for ten minutes. Someone then wrote on the kitchen cupboard: "The cat is in the microwave. Nice cat. You had a nice cat."

Yeah ... not sure they should be banned from violent games, but keep them the Hell away from Viva Piñata.

Are the people here that aren't upset about the cat being killed just reacting to the people that want the kids to be killed or do you guys just not realise that this is textbook sociopathic behaviour and one of the traditional steps people take before harming humans?

You do realize that we slit the throats of billions of animals each year for human consumption, right?

That we experiment on them?

Do live autopsies without any anesthetic?

That last point is bullshit. No one following whatever procedure they're supposed to be following cuts apart animals without anesthetic. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it's just not supposed to and that doing that is as reprehensible as this story.

they should get castrated and their arms cut off, no violent video games for a year? I wonder if they are old enough to even play them in the first place? Considering the punishment, I don't think they are.

So what would of happened if the cat's owners walked into the house? I'm guessing it wouldn't of been just a cat being killed.

These sociopaths shouldn't be allowed to walk freely amongst society. No one that is sane plans and then commits to doing something as inhuman as that.

.. I'm sure the shits will off themselves in a matter of days.

In all honesty, if there was some one who put an innocent person into a giant microwave and cooked them to death I would be pretty pissed as well.

But in terms of pets, our society views them in much of the same way we view babies. These aren't just some animal, but a reflection of an innocent family member.

As for the ban on video games, to a certain extent it is warranted in my opinion. This is based on the fact that these two individuals are exhibiting severe antisocial characteristics (one of the major signs of a deranged individual is to torture an animal), and in this case violent media would only exacerbate the situation.

Wow, took long enough for some to come in with the old "such outrage for stupid cat, BUT YOU EAT MEAT" chesnut, nice to see you're as big a retard as I thought you where.

And the sentence is shit, animal cruelty is just one small step, do it enough times and you'll wanna kill a person not to mention leaving the message, these shits are sociopaths plain and simple, no amount of therapy or lack of owning animals will help them, a severe beating with a lead pipe though, that could work, hopefully one of these PETA nuts kicks the shit out of them, nobody will care.

Try em as adults, lock them in jail for a year, let's see how they feel about animals then.

Also, to all the assholes with "LOL I HATE CATS SO ITS FUNNY", do you like animals at all? Birds? Gerbils? A dog?

Would you like it if this happened to your pet of choice? Would you be laughing then if you came home and found your dog inside the oven?

Seriously, shut the fuck up.

in certain cultures, cat is considered a fine delicacy, and should NEVER be subject to something as taste-destroying as a microwave.

In all serious, though, this is pretty twisted. Animal cruelty existed long before video games did. Showing violence against animals is a red flag for someone who has sadistic desires and has no fear of acting them out, just like a serial killer. Ted Bundy was known to torture animals when he was a kid, and the same goes for Jeffery Dhamer. I'm pretty sure Ed Gein has killed many an animal back in his day too. Something inane like Barring them from violent video games is very irresponsible on the Judge's behalf.

It's weird to see local Alberta news on Destructoid.

I'm fairly sure I read they were banned from violent movies as well. The kids knew the house they were breaking into, they knew the people were on vacation. They also broke into the house twice, the first time they smashed things, the second time they broke in is when they microwaved the cat and wrote on the walls. The article Jim links also says there were also more kids who sat around and watched.

So not only did they kill the cat, they broke in and destroyed their home. Nobody blamed video games for doing it, and I believe they banned movies as well, and I think it's fine to take them away. I don't understand a 2 year pet ban, after someone kills an animal and enjoys it, I think they need much more than 2 years.

Don't change the subject and try to strawman me.

Your posts consisted of calling the act of microwaving someone's live pet for 10 minutes (during which it remained alive) "awesome" and the perpetrators' notes of "The cat is in the microwave. Nice cat. You had a nice cat."--left to inflict further pain upon the owners--as "Lol."

To me, that sounds like something a junior high student would say (or someone with that level of maturity). So, since you missed my point the first time: Grow up.

[Even if you're a troll, your posts in particular should not be left unaddressed.]

I say toss em in a cage with a lion or a tiger with a microwave and let them try and microwave that.

I see the "no violent games" as more of a "take something away that they like" thing. As for the therapy though, fuck it, they need a really good beating. Not jail time or anything, but to be beaten to within inches of their life so they can learn the value of one(or if that fails, resort to plan "A" above).

Reguardless of age, that's a sick and twisted thing to do, no matter what animal it is or who owns it. The punishment should be very severe.

@pacopaco that's not straw manning. your argument is baseless and irrelevant.

we rape and murder animals in horrific ways all the time, and you have the stupidity to pretend that frying a cat alive in a microwave is a crime by comparison?

It's like mowing down 1,000,000,000 people by firing squad, and then getting teary eyed over victim # 1,000,000,001.

Swing and a miss. The points you make (as useful as SOME of them may be in other contexts) aren't addressing my argument. Your argument is aimed more at SOCIETY, my argument is aimed at YOU.

And yes, you were indeed straw-manning me (though I am always open to articulate corrections). You are attributing traits and beliefs to me as you see convenient and (attempting) to disprove them with your tangents to various animal industries as well as human executions and atrocities.

I'll totally agree with you that the issue of how we treat certain animals and for what purpose is a great topic for debate, but my concern in this thread is your reaction to what these teenagers did ("Lol" and "awesome," if you forgot) as I imagine they were thinking similar thoughts while they nuked the cat and wrote those messages.

[Oh, and don't bother replying thinking that I'll ever read it. I can see where our exchanges are heading and would rather not remain an active participant. Let's just both agree to not understand a single word the other guy is saying and call it a day.]

Some of you are very quick to suggest death penalty or effective equivalents (putting the kids in a certain death situation) here. You do know that most developed nations in the world have laws against animal cruelty, with appropriate penalty? Also, you do realise that animal cruelty is, unfortunately, a widespread ill of most societies? Get riled up about hunting for sport if you really are an "animal lover" (haha, I wuv that term). Advocating the murder/death of these dumb kids just makes you look like a fucking nutjob.

Also, who knows. Maybe the cat was a real dick and had it coming? Like this [pbfcomics.com].

I think they should be allowed to play violent videogames as an outlet. It's like smallkid said, they got a rush from it, they need to find another way of getting that rush.

They're 16 years old so there's still time to get them to realise the consequences of their actions and that animal cruelty is not cool. But to the people saying they should burn at the stake or that they're sociopaths destined to shoot up their school then you have absolutely no idea about human psychology at all. You're unbelievably preoccupied with the social definitions of sane and normal and reacting like a fool to tabloid newspapers, caught up in the moment.

To compare a human life to a cat is amazing. No, they shouldn't of done it but to think they should die for that? Try and think before you speak because a cat is no way on our level. Try not to let you're emotions get the better of you.

Hahahaha, so you would fix the problem of apathy in two teens who acted out overt violent behavior towards a cat of people they knew, by.... acting out violence on them as a solution? Way to go :)

There isn't even any information of what their relationship was to the family who lived in the house, other than that they knew them. Maybe they thought it was a good idea to act out revenge on something, maybe they are just dicks or sociopaths. And when they say they had no remorse, that obviously means they are future serial killers of people, not just teens who will always take the tough-guy act in a situation like that.

You are pretty happy about that 1% of the US popuation currently in jail as well, I presume? Better to just lock everyone up, because there's no use in rehabilitation or therapy anyway... Ah well, we all knew you were a tool anyway :)

These two should definitely be sharing a jail cell with Michael Vick. Maybe they can all talk about how retarded their decisions were, since it will ultimately ruin their lives.

And for those of you comparing this to slaughterhouses or labrats... fuck you. For one, those deaths are 99% of the time far quicker and more humane than this example. For two, those that work in those environments aren't getting boners from the killings. For three, those deaths are for honest-to-god purposes other than sheer crazy person fun.

I don't enjoy the idea of animals dying, but when I eat a hamburger or get a flu shot I know that sacrifices have to be made, and that the animals were treated as humanely as possible. This is substantially more fucked up than anything regulated.

To be honest, I think anyone who is cruel to domestic animals should get fined and jailtime, which is the case in most areas of the US and Canada. These kids definately need therapy, but there must be punishment as well. If it's not taking away outlets for the boys, then what? Isn't jailtime the ultimate removal of outlets?
