Kids microwave cat, get banned from playing videogames ... wait, what? photo

I know some of you are sick of the "videogamers who do crimes" angle, but this one's just a bit too eyebrow-raising not to post. It involves a cat, a microwave and two teenagers who wanted to combine the former with the latter -- so they did. The relevance here (as if cat cooking wasn't worth mentioning in and of itself) is that the Alberta residents responsible for this cruelty have been banned from violent videogames for a year as part of their punishment. What?

"Two Alberta teenagers who killed a family's cat in a microwave - a crime that drew outrage from animal lovers around the world - have been banned by a judge from owning animals for at least two years.

They're also barred from owning or playing violent video games for the next year."

"According to court-ordered psychological assessments, video games were not found to have directly encouraged the boys' actions.

But barring their access to such games was nonetheless a recommendation put forward in the assessments."

In addition to the pet and game ban, the kids are being forced to undertake counseling with a forensic therapist and and will be under a curfew from 9pm to 6am every night. Thanks to the animal ban, the family of one of the teens now has to get rid of their dog, which they apparently bought while the boy was facing these charges. They get no jail time, but one teen has had to relocate to avoid the threats and outrage. Animal rights activists also vow to smash in some faces over this.

The cat, Princess, belonged to vacationing homeowners who had their house broken into by the boys. Princess was said to have been cooked to death, while screaming, for ten minutes. Someone then wrote on the kitchen cupboard: "The cat is in the microwave. Nice cat. You had a nice cat."

Yeah ... not sure they should be banned from violent games, but keep them the Hell away from Viva Piñata.

I love the Grand Theft Auto cat baking simulator too! It definitely makes GTA the game of the year.

But people from Alberta are generally pretty fucking crazy, this doesn't surprise me. Which I suppose is pretty horrible in itself.

They should be banned from their civil liberties and their freedom. They should also be banned from their anal virginity when some huge lumberjacking bastard makes them his new "special friend."

Personally, I'd prefer they were banned from having faces anymore.

If anything, I'll just use the "video games did it" routine, seems to work a lot.

This isn't a big deal, guys. It's just a form of punishment. Don't be uptight alarmist gamers. After all, wouldn't you guys feel pretty damn punished, if you were forbidden from playing violent games?

OH NOES, WE'S BEING PERSEMECUTED! Sigh.

They videoed Princess the Cat in the microwave and posted it online. It can be seen on Slashfood under Chinese cuisine. They should ban those kids from watching Rachel Ray.

Seriously, they are some sick bastards. Still, I hate cats...so "Heh heh!"

Doesn't make any sense for them to ban video games for them. Why not just take away their electronics completely. That's what made them microwave a cat lol. Sorry for laughing. It's just so ridiculous.

I'm never one to blame video games for our society's woes, but cruelty to animals is just plain bad. Those teens needed a nice dose of corporal punishment, if you ask me.

I was a teen once, and I remember doing stupid things. However, torturing people/things was not one of them. What are you kids thinking these days? Sheesh!

This came up in my art class last year, i stand by the opinion i had back then. People on the internet have done worse, from a guy beating a puppy to death with a brick to this girl skinning a cat.

I'm not going to hot link it or anything because its pretty messed up. But seriously people do way worse and don't get punished at all.

Your point being? What, because others have done similar acts and not been punished that these fuckers shouldn't be punished?

I think the teens would be better off getting jailtime - because they're gonna get punished one way or another, might as well be formal and regulated by the govt.

I mean, with all the people who know who they are (young offenders acts can't make neighbors forget they know what happend, everybody talks) and all the people who know they didn't get a 'real' punishment; its going to catch up with them someday - maybe in a bar after too many drinks have washed away inhibitions.

I would guess/hope this is more "Take away something they like to punish them" then "Take a way video games since they might corrupt them;." Although even if that was the case, that's kind of going against their rights. I'm all for punishing the kids, but the parents are the ones who should take away personal privileges like that, not the law. I think.

I think Jim is writing this in a fit of rage after outing himself by professing his love for Rouge.

I don't know how anyone could do something like this. I mean, for ten fucking minutes? Hearing animals in pain for a few seconds is unsettling but for TEN MINUTES? Jail is extensive but they definitely shouldn't be allowed pets ever again. I wouldn't be upset if the judge was less merciful regarding their breaking and entering.

That is messed up. I think this premeditated act of violence isn't being punished severely enough.

If you can stand listening to the tortured sounds of a living creature for ten minutes, they you are a lot more likely to inflict that same type of torture on a human being.

No, i'm saying its not a big deal, its just a cat. The thing is people do things that they find interesting, if they find torture fun they will do it. If they like video games they will play them. Something like this isn't going to do anything, if they found torturing the cat fun that is. Because deep down that feeling of excitement they felt when they boiled all the water molecules in the cat won't go away. That feeling will only go away if they find something that makes them that excited. Hopefully you understand what i was trying to say i can't gather my thoughts very well.

And if you don't oh well it's just the internet

They watched it fry for 10 minutes, they left a note and don't sound repent at all. Yeah these kids need a little more then a "don't get to play violent video games anymore" ban. Also if I remember correctly one of the school shootings was partially orchestrated by the fact that the shooters were banned from violent video games which they used for escapest release...so even that seems like a risky thing to ban.

Good to hear they're getting psyhcological treatment which is probably the only way to ensure that they either calm the hell down or get sent up the river.

Better punishment: Give them a microwave, put them in a feral tiger enclosure (with a wall socket for fairness) and let nature take it's course.

All this mollycoddling "send them to a therapist" nonesense is a waste of time.

Banishment from violent games is not nearly a bad enough punishment. Haven't there been studies that state that violence doesn't go hand in hand with violent videogames? And what about the whole "breaking into a house" thing? Is that, like, dropped? I know if it was my cat I would press charges on the parents, as well.

"barred from owning or playing violent video games"

If barring them from videogames was part of the punishment, the word "violent" shouldn't even be a part of that sentence. I don't get how not letting them play Mercenaries2 but allowing something like Madden 09 makes any sense.

Or maybe the word "violent" was just tacked on to "videogames" by the judge or story reporter out of ignorance.

Either way, those kids need a lot more than simple "punishment."

I dunno man, I felt bad for the cat in the pit of my stomach. Regardless the punishment is strange, they should just be barred from games period for a year, I cant see why they need to be away from pets though. Sucks that the family has to put the dog back in the pound, not really their fault their son is a flaming reject. I mean putting them in jail would just turn them into more delinquents then they are, but there should of been some kind of harsher punishment that makes them work somewhere.

You needa be messed up in the head to do that though, honestly. Animal Rights activist are also flaming retards though, well the most of them are.

Blablabla, it's ok to eat a cow but not a cat. It's ok to crush an ant and a cockroach but not a cat. Even if none of them are sentient, hmm! And if someone does, he/she should be punished by the same kind of physical punishment as the one they did, to make it right?

I'd say: the Princess is in another castle. Jonathan Blow called it.

@MotoRobo: I'll be sure to let them know psychology is not a real scientific field, so we can just give up on education/proper military training/office workforces/people not killing themselves over personal issues/multiplayer game design etc :)

@Smallkid,

I think I understood what you were trying to say in yoru second post. Punishment can be viewed as consequentialist or retibutivist - consequentialists favour punishment only to the degree that it is likely to prevent future criminal behaviour - and so favour things like rehabilitation over purely punative sentencing.

Retributivists see punishment as the necessary answer to past criminal behaviour - that the criminal has created a debt by violating rules that apply to everybody - and that any specific deterrance caused by punishment to the offender is only a side benefit.

Generally I'm a pragmatist and favour the consequentialist philosophy of law morality and punishment, but the retributive side presents the advantage of expressive dimension of punishment, which works toward general deterence (that is by expressing society's censur against the act and actor, and demonstration swift and certain punishment, other potential future offenders will be deterred from similar behaviour.

I believe this is a situation where an expressive retirbutivist punishment was called for. As you said, more or less, these kids are fuckups and social burdens with damage probably beyond repair, but if by punishing them heavily and expressivly we can deter other less-fucked-up people from considering similar acts, society benefits, and at the very least a pair of fuckups are secluded from society for a few years.

Then I would sit back and hope they choose the mental institution - where they would get stuck with an indefinite sentence.

Protip: never plea insanity on anything less than murder, odds are you'll do less time in prison than the puzzle factory.

Oh, and I agree with Sharpless a million posts ago, I think the video games ban was probably intended simply as a 'take away their toys' punishment.

Entirely inappropriate IMO, but not because of the 'games = violence' argument, just because its a stupid punishment for a series of serious criminal acts committed with frightening indifference.

Taking away toys is a sanction your mom hands out when a child doesn't do his homework, it is not even on the order of magnitude that these sociopaths should recieve.

They were worried because one of the kids, after taking physiological tests was fully aware of what he did and the pain he caused to the family and had no remorse whatsoever, a prime candidate for mental health issues and an aggressive future. I guess the videogame thing should have been supported by limiting violent movies as well if they were so worried about his mental health but oh well
