Kid shoots herself with gun she thought was a Wiimote? photo

A mother in Tennessee is claiming that her daughter fatally shot herself in the stomach with a handgun she mistakenly believed to a Wii controller. At least, that's her only explanation for what could have happened.

The gun was left lying around by the victim's stepfather, who claims he produced the .380 caliber pistol to deal with a potential prowler, then left it on a table and promptly forgot all about it. Even more astoundingly, the mother was in the same room as the three-year-old girl when she picked the gun up and managed to shoot herself with it.

This story is all kinds of f*cked up. A man leaving a gun -- safety off -- in easy reach of a three-year-old, and a mother who is in the same room as a kid playing with the deadly weapon and somehow not noticing. That's before we even get into the fanciful notion of a child, however young, somehow confusing a gun with a controller.

I literally don't know what else to say about this. Seriously ... what!?

Ugh.

I'm getting a feeling this is an attempt to get out of negligence.

Oy. At this point, I'm thinking there should be greater attention on the corellation between things BLAMED on video-games that are more likely caused by parental negligence, because almost ALL of the stories I hear about parental negligence nowadays seem to be brought up due to parenthetical gaming relevance.

Conception should require a license.

Every parent I know that owns a gun keeps theirs locked up, separated from the bullets. It's common sense.

Wow. I'm speechless. My heart goes out to the family despite the incredible level of retarded the parents displayed.

Someone needed to be shot in that situation, and it wasn't the three year old girl.

How do you forget that you left a gun on the table?

For fucks sake, it's a god damned gun. Next I'll be hearing about how someone lost their gun until Jimmy found it under the sofa cushion. I hope one or both of these dipshit 'parents' have some kind of charges filed against them.

We dev need more guns! Maybe someone (with a gun) seeing that situation colapsing, could have stoped her by shooting her in the face?

They will still be charged with negligence. I mean, come on, all they have to do is show that a Wii remote and a gun look nothing alike, in colour or shape, so the jury will have an easy time convicting these...

Wait... Tennessee?

My first memories are from when I was three and then I was intelligent enough to know what a gun was and not to use it. Maybe her brain developed later than mine; and, if that's the case, she won't know not to do something like that until a year or two from now. Despite the intelligence of the three year old, the parents obviously shouldn't have left the gun out.

The Wii spin to this story is completely irrelevant and idiotic. It doesn't even make sense how they would know that. Did she say "I thought it was a Wiimote" while she had a bullet in her stomach?

More importantly, why did the dipshit of a father leave a loaded gun with the safety off on a kitchen table with a child in the house!? You don't need formal training on handling guns to know that you don't leave a firearm loaded, unlocked and unattended, no matter what the circumstances. That is criminal negligence.

Human stupidity knows no bounds.

This little girl should be alive. She should be laughing and having a good time being a kid. Instead, she is dead, because of stupid FUCKING idiots who don't know how to be decent human beings.

Fuck this makes me so angry.

That's just a whole new level of stupid. How the fuck do you as a human being let alone a parent forget to put away a loaded gun that's in the same room as 3 year old?

They should just start IQ tests before you can have kids. If you pass you can go ahead. If you fail you're castrated.

Child thought it was a wii controller? How about the child though it was a gun and made a concious decision to remove itself from the gene pool because it's parents were stupid enough to allow this to happen?

My 2 year old was using the wii nunchuck as a cell phone last night. But that doesn't change that the mother's story sounds fabricated to me.

Any bets on when the family sues Nintendo?

As tragic and stupid as this story is, I don't find it outside the realm of possibility that she would mistake a gun for a Wiimote PERIPHERAL, though I doubt they'd bother to make the distinction.

Who cares what the girl thought it was? She was three. If a three year old sees something within reach that they can't identify, they pick it up and play with it, with no exception.

Both parents deserve to be shot in the gut and left to die. They didn't pull the trigger, but they killed this poor girl.

@Static Jak: You don't need an IQ test for that. You just put them in a room with a 1st grade level school test, a computer running WoW, and a TV tuned to American Idol. If 5 hours later the test paper is still untouched, it's off to the OR with them.
