This seems like a bit of a Captain Obvious post, but everybody's treating Masahiro Sakurai's comments like a big deal, so you might want to know. Basically, the Kid Icarus Uprising director has stated that you'll want a set of steady hands in order to get the most out of your 3DS' visuals.
Since the 3D effect only works from a fixed position, Sakurai says that your hands will need to be kept free of exaggerated movements, which could spoil the illusion. He thinks the 3DS should be played with your hands planted on your lap, or using a peripheral that docks the system on a flat surface.
We more or less figured already that the 3D effect won't pop out from anywhere like the hologram chess in Star Wars, but here's a little reminder for you. The 3DS' visual trickery is pretty amazing, but I hope people aren't expecting Arnold J. Rimmer to pop out at them.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Every portable device you hold is going to shake. It is held by you, which is affected by gravity and impact. Unless the screen pops out and hovers perfectly in place, some clarity is lost.
On Topic: doesn't really effect me, when I play handheld games they always stay sitting still in mmy hands, unless its a game like Warioware, where shaking and heavy tapping on the screen occurs. That could be a negative for the 3D effect.
If Nintendo can perfect holographic projections in the time it took them to slim the DS down, I'll buy the fucking thing.
I don't enjoy 3D much anyway, but if I do get a 3DS I wouldn't mind sitting still while playing it, or just turning the 3D effect off when I don't need it.
This only opens the door for every 3rd party to make completely useless accessories and convince the world that those accessories are necessary. Actually...maybe I'll do that myself.
Nobody said the technology was perfect. But it is what it is.
There is no way this system can fail. The games are going to be great regardless of the 3d effect. The 3d shit is just icing on the cake.
Smeghead.
Oh well This better mean I get better framerates without the 3D effects.
No he doesn't Anoop just made those suggestions.
Common sense, in blog comments? It's more likely than I thought.
I don't know why people were expecting Nintendo to have solved both the lack-of-glasses issue AND the perspective issue. Right now this is still the only way to enjoy 3D without glasses, which puts it a step above everything else.
If everyone wants to wait for perfect holograms, go for it.

How does that defeat the purpose of handheld gaming? If anything, that is the purpose of handheld gaming. You have to have the screen in front of your face to play it. But its not like you have to sit there, straight as a board and not move a muscle. It does have some room for you to move, its just not good for people to watch you play over your shoulder!
Isn't that how everyone uses handhelds anyway? Why would you hold it in the air?

I can already imagine the middle school children walking around in "eXtReme 3DS Neck Stabalizers" on the side of the box for features it'll say something like Hi-tech hyrdo neck cushion when in actuality it's just a piece of rubber
TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT.
Thanks. You made me feel guilty for laughing.
At least for me, handheld gaming means A) playing comfortably and freely in whatever position I want, and B) while I'm waiting for stuff, which usually means standing in line. Neither sounds like it gels well with the 3DS version of 3D. Of course, I don't know that yet, not for sure, but that's the vibe I'm getting.
