Australia's Classification Board rated the NES game Kid Icarus as a 3D Classic title for 3DS. So it's coming to the west for sure.
Need more proof? Nintendo Europe confirms the release in a pretty great way. They'll give it out Kid Icarus free to Club Nintendo users that register two qualified games before Jan 31, 2012. Those people will also be entered into a drawing to win one of 3,000 limited Mario-edition 3DS systems. Lucky! You'll find images of the systems as well as the list of qualifying 3DS games here.
There's no US release date yet, but I'm sure we'll hear something soon. Hopefully we'll get the same promotion as Europe.

Why would they give the best 3D effect to a game that isn't even a classic (Urban Champions) but give the actual classics just sprites that are popping out a little.
Stupid Nintendo.
I wonder what people today think about Pac Man.
Hate to tell you the game really isn't like Metroid. Its a good game, and unholy tough to get through, but don't fool yourself into thinking its much like Metroid.
Anyway, I already qualify, so I hope this comes this way too.
Now, if the US promotion allows RECENT registrations to still enter the drawing, or if they just let all members who are already Gold/Platinum for 2012 enter, then it wouldn't be so bad.
Also, zero interest in Kid Icarus as it is a horrible game (much like the other "Classics," but those LE 3DSs would be great to have.

So it sounds like it is indeed retroactive (which is good because most of the games on the list are ones we all bought back in the spring/summer).

Thanks for the heads up, I'll set me expectations different now. I always heard of Kid Icarus refereed to as "Metroid's Younger Brother" so I thought that meant the games played similarly.
Sigh. I'm sure Nintendo will screw up and give us another classic soon... Deadly Towers in glorious 3D. =/
