Kevin Butler: Director of Actually Selling PS3s photo

Hey, this Kevin Butler ad campaign for the PS3 is really working. Get this: At last week's MI6 marketing conference,  SCEA's marketing man Peter Dille said that purchasing intent for the PS3 is up 36 percent since the "It Only Does Everything" campaign started last year.

Dille also said that PS3 sales are up 184%, though that's likely due to the price drop. He does say that "we know from research that consumers are more educated as well." Was that all Kevin Butler's doing?

Wait. What the f*ck is "purchasing intent" anyway? Sounds good, I guess. Who cares. Kevin Butler is making it happen somehow. He has made me giggle. For me, that doesn't translate into "purchasing intent," but I guess it did for that 36 percent.

Dille: "We kind of gotten back to our mojo with the sense of humor that people came to know and love with early PlayStation advertising. I think it's just a more likable connection to the consumer."

Weird how good humor sells better then creepy babies and generally disturbing imagery.
Who would have thought?

I love me some Kevin Butler. So much better than those crying baby dolls PS3 ads.

He's also a hoot to follow on Twitter. It's like getting a little KB PS3 commercial a few times every day.

Kevin Butler's pretty damn funny. I'm glad that his inclusion in the marketing campaign is helping Sony out...Though I do have one question...

"It Only Does Everything."

Can you f**k it?

Its much better than telling people they should work harder and more hours so they can afford one. Assholes.

These ads are pretty good though.

@L G Jargon : Well, it's the PS3 that only does everything. So I think the real question is "Can it fuck you?"

Jerry Lambert does a fantastic job with this character. Sony really needs to continue this line of marking for a long time to come. The Keven Butler character is too awesome to let fade.

"purchase intent" - they ask a bunch of people "do you intend to buy a ps3 in the next (insert time frame)?" when people check a box that says "yes," it means they have purchasing intent.

The price drop sold me on finally getting a PS3. I ran out to stores before they were even supposed to be on shelves and nabbed one. These ads are just amusing.

All purchasing intent is about is if they ask random people if they'll take a survey and they ask them if (for those that don't own a PS3) they are considering buying one in the future.
Makes for nice optimism in their sales meeting for those who don't actually ask "Wait, what the heck is purchase intent" and instead simply soak in "up 36%".
Basically, they had an increase in people telling them they would want one eventually compared to saying a flat out no, they have no interest.

They need less surveys and more common sense over at Sony. Sales went up because the price dropped. It's not that complex.
Come on, people are/were misinformed or confused about PS3? You're telling me that people didn't think of the Playstation as something that plays games and movies?
What were these people supposedly thinking it was? A foot warmer?
Which is actually true. It does warm the feet quite nicely.

I "intend" to buy the MGS Peace Walker PSP bundle... but seeing as how I own a fully-functional PSP 1000, I don't need to and I'll just buy the game for a lot less instead.

purchasing intent means that whenever they poll someone with a "Are you going to purchase a PS3" people are 36% more likely to answer "Maybe" instead of "No". While that might not mean anything on a sales chart, it does mean that there is potential expansion into a new market.

I like the new Sony ads. It almost makes me forget all the shoddy PR they've had up until this point.

How many ps2 games have you even played since buying a PS3 (if you do indeed own one). While i love/loved my ps2 the number of those games i've played since getting my ps3 is about 3. Oddly enough enough though i own those games i decided to buy them off PSN anyway its easier and i dont have to carry the disc around with me (my PS3 is BC). As always if you really want to play some ps2 games buy a PS2 they are dirt cheap and/or invest in the old 60 gig models with BC. Few people use the BC and it only added cost to the unit for the other 95% of people out there.

I don't own a PS3 and I haven't been playing any PS2 games lately due to my PS2 being dead. I really don't want to just buy another PS2, no matter how cheap they are. I'd prefer to just buy a new PS3 that is BC and not have to buy a PS3 and a PS2 or track down a 60gig PS3. But it's not gonna happen anymore than the PS3 actually, "does everything".

like RPT111 said there is the software emulation thing on PSN i'm not sure how comprehensive it is. Doesn't really matter since you are just a troll. If you don't a PS3 thats fine just don't bitch about things that aren't really problems.

Can't stand Sony's ads. They may make decent value-for-money and reliable systems but their arrogance and smugness is grating. Particularly when they're ripping off others' ideas - the recent Move advert is the perfect example. Even before it's out and has been proven to be popular they're slagging off their competitors. That's why I'm going to enjoy seeing this cynical derivative move fail when consumers decide not to splash out on a £250 console + another £100 just to play slightly better looking games you can already find on their wiis.

You'd think with the appalling start to the generation that Sony would learn some humility.

i sign you that.

Sony was always a good company and had always been making superb gaming devices(i own 2 of em) but i cant stand these snot-nosed ads. Since when is repudiating other companys a good marketing strategy? So much for sony is a noble company with a sence for honour.

For me KB is a arrogant brik. But hey, maybe this is exactly the targetet audience!
