Ken Levine lost his girlfriend thanks to Legend of Zelda photo

BioShock creator Ken Levine takes games seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he lost his first real girlfriend thanks to The Legend of Zelda, among other classic games such as Adventure, Ultima Underworld and Castle Wolfenstein. It's funny that Nintendo markets itself so much toward families these days, when once upon a time it was the cause of more than a few broken relationships.

"After I graduated from college, I moved to an apartment in San Francisco with the first super-serious girlfriend. She was a couple of years younger than me, so at the end of the summer, she was set to go back to school," explains the game designer. "On our last day together in San Fran, I for some reason picked up The Legend of Zelda. As she stood by waiting for some romantic gesture to happen on our last day living together, she was instead treated to watching me obsessively plow through Hyrule for around 15 hours."

"By the time the cab showed up to take her to the airport, I realized if I had any hope of keeping her as my girlfriend, it was time to shut off the NES. Needless to say, we didn’t spend the next summer together."

The silly bint should have realized she was competing with The Legend of Zelda and stood aside, really. Any woman incapable of facing reality isn't worth keeping.

Didn't she realize he was trying to save the princess? It was his way of telling her not to go. Women are so dense. :/

she should take a leaf out my Woman's book.....

Get yourself into Peggle, bubble spinner or some other game you can play on the laptop! - Currently trying to 100% the WoW themed peggle.

Ro is a gem, the first Woman i've ever had who is happy to watch me play games, some games, she likes those with a story - loved MGS but hated Metal Gear online (constant death screams) - needless to say I quickly proposed to and impregnated her - i'm keeping this one.

In the near future, video games will replace girlfriends with virtual ones.

I would never do that to the girl I'm with now... but I've had some in my past that I would totally ditch for a video game like Zelda.

How could he do that, how could he treat her that way. Shame on you Ken, for blaming a girl like Zelda for your real life troubles, apologise to her this instant.

Besides, if your girlfriends can't handle you playing video games, its not worth it, at least thats what I told whatshername... it'll come to me...

As a counterpoint, I used a new copy of the original Legend of Zelda for GBA to propose to my wife. At the time, she was using Zelda as her screen name. I opened the box and set the three savefile names to:
1. WILLYOU
2. MARRYME
3. ZELDA?
and then gave it to her as a late Christmas present during our New Year's Eve party.

That whole feature on Rock Paper Shotgun is worth looking at. Levine is probably the most high-profile contributor but the whole thing, to quote one of the commenters there, is a fapstorm of nostalgia.

One time while I was with my ex, I realized I had set a date with one of the characters in Animal Crossing, and I was going to be late. I made up a hasty excuse and left so I could get to my DS and keep the date. As I got into the game, I realized just how sad this actually was.

So I dumped her.

And Leo moved out of my town the next day. -_-
