Kane & Lynch director talks about critical savagery photo

My former accomplice David Houghton has been chatting with Jens Peter Kurup, director of the notorious Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. In the interview, Kurup discusses the negative backlash that his game received from the press, and how it affected him. In particular, he mentions the controversial GameSpot review and the lasting affects it had on his game:

It’s a review that I would like to forget, but unfortunately the GameSpot review had its own wicked little life and Eidos, GameSpot and of course the game got entangled in what I guess is best described as a conspiracy theory. And if there’s anything the 'net loves, it’s a good conspiracy.

It was surreal to sit in Copenhagen and watch the game get shredded in forums for reasons and feelings that didn’t all seem entirely based on the game itself. I know this might sound like a sissy song of “Boo-hoo! This isn’t fair” and other unproductive thoughts, but you asked me how I felt and I did feel like that for a couple of weeks after the GameSpot review. Pathetic I know, but in glimpses I still feel it, because when I meet somebody who hasn’t played the game, I can be fairly sure that his or her opinion is based on the GameSpot review. It just won't go away.

In fairness, Kurup handles the criticism his game received fairly maturely and reasonably, which is refreshing to see when you consider how some other game devs act when their game is reviewed poorly. Kurup actually shows some respect for reviewers, even when voicing disagreement with some of their points. That's pretty cool to see for a change. It's just a shame Kane & Lynch did so badly critically, because it was looking really good in theory.

Poor Eidos dev needs a hug. So many good ideas, such terrible delivery and even worse PR.

I still have yet to try that game. It sounds like a frustrating play from everything I've read but hopefully its still playable with co-op. Army of Two wasn't perfect either but it was pretty damn fun with a friend. I really hope they make more two player games in the future despite a few bumps in the road.

It's nice to see a developer react so maturely to negative feedback on their game. It's got to hurt when people utterly destroy the thing you've been working on for 2-3 years, but being a baby about it won't help anyone.

His reply almost makes me want to try Kane & Lynch, almost.

Oh snap!

Pretty cool to see the old Mr Houghton again.

Honestly from the demo I got the impression that it was pretty average. High hopes turned into low blows I guess.

If it's any consolation to him, I base my impressions on actually having played the game. They still aren't very good though.

Of course he's handling it maturely: he's had nearly a year to calm down. ;)

In theory this game is brilliant, unfortunately in practice it is far from perfect.

Hey I thought the game was actually pretty cool. Worked fine for me all the way through and was a fun experience. Squad commands were very simple but effective. And the ending was a bit shit, but what video game ending isn't, ey?

I saw David's pic on Gamedaily the other day, and smiled for a sec. Good to see that our good old chap is still around in the biz. Sad to see him go, as you two made a great team.

He has a very valid point that a lot of people who haven't played the game have very strong feelings on the game based on that review. I didn't really mind the controls myself, it managed to feel a lot more akin to actually using a gun than a lot of more responsive control schemes feel. The co-op was pretty entertaining for me as well. I guess the real point I'd like to make is that everyone I have played through the game with on Co-Op, around 12 different friends, has managed to quite enjoy the game. The common thread? None of them read game reviews.

I thought it was alright. Not good, but not bad either, just pretty mediocre.

The story is interesting, but falls flat because the characters lack any real redeeming features that can make them likeable.

The gameplay feels terribly outdated, since it looks and plays almost exactly like the Hitman games, but with less sneaky stuff and more action, wich the Hitman setup really isn't all that suited for.

While I had high hopes for the game, in practice it was a disaster. I had the PC verison and it was riddled with bugs. A promised patch has supposedly been in the works for almost a year now, but I have to say I don't believe that.

The multiplayer is a lot of fun, when you don't get disconnected, and I had some fun with the single player experience, when it did not crash. And whoever thought no internet co-op was a good idea should be shot.

David Houghton sighting~!

As for the game, Gerstmann did get it right with the 6/10 score. The story was great, but the game play suffered. However, because the story was actually good, I have hopes the Kane and Lynch movie will be better than the game.

I still think it was an okay game, at least on PC, and actually very powerful at times.

So he can take that from me.

I played it and I LIKED IT. No one should LOVE every game they play, the art will never further. I have also never understood gamers that play/don't play games strictly based on someone else's opinion...

I played the demo for a grand total of about 5 minutes. In both the ps3 and 360 demos you were not allowed to invert the F*cking controlls. As some one who has to play fps games on consoles inverted this essentially rendered the game unplayable to me. Its not like people that play inverted are some small percentage of the gaming market so why screw us on your crappy demo. No I think kane and lynch was just a shitty game, with an interesting premise.

well I know I skipped it because of that controversy, so he has a point

anyway IO needs to forget about this K&L bullshit and make Hitman 5 already!
