Somewhere in Miami, three weeks ago...
My shitty blackberry: MEH HUH EH RING OH OH EH MEH
Ron Workman: Flaco.
Niero: Workmeng?
Ron: The Hudson thing's a go. Ah crap hold on, Jared brought a polar bear in the house and the African children I'm breast feeding look terrified. Let me get my shovel, I'll call you back. Niero: Did you say Hudson?
My shitty blackberry: RING UHM UH UHHHH DROP ME AGAIN AND KILL ME NOW RING OHHHH
Dad: ¡Come mierda!
Niero: Hey dad, you remember Bomberman? You bought it for me like twenty years ago the Nintendo and we used to play it all the time. The one where you bomb bricks and things? It was the one with the little balloons, we would play it together for hours. Remember? You played it all the time and got stuck in the level where you bomb the door and those dragons come out. Well now it's an Xbox 360 game. Well, you'll never believe it! Ron talked to those guys while we were at E3 and our video game community company mascot is actually going to BE in the next version of their game! Destructoid as an actual playable character in Bomberman! Like, you can pick his helmet and it actually says Destructoid and they are even putting in my white shoes! PIIIIMP!!!!
Dad: (long pause) ... ¿Que?
Ok, so it was hard to explain, but he'll see what I mean when I boot up my console late September and Destructoid comes to life before our very eyes on Xbox Live Arcade as part of a new Bomberman Live expansion pack! Imagine that! Talk about a unique situation, eh? A video game blog coming to life in a video game. Imagine that! Somebody send this memo to the elitist jerkoff that keeps removing us from Wikipedia, we got something good for the queen today.
We all grew up playing Bomberman and Hudson's telling us that we're about to get immortalized in one of the longest-running franchises in gaming? This is a very special day for me. I really want to thank everyone at Hudson that made this possible, especially John and Amar. It's a big day for others as well: the character design was designed by a community member Phist -- so not only did we get him into the game but one of our readers became a key part of the process (and now adopted him into our art team). Another funny note: Most of our own editors on the site didn't even know it was a sure thing until right now, as we kept the artwork and confirmation a secret (I know, I'm a bastard). So there you have it -- a gaming blog is in a game. Aside from our incredible sexyness there's all this other stuff that's also in the expansion pack, including a new game mode:
- * Ten New Characters – In addition to Destructoid, other new characters include “Bomberella” the cavewoman and “El Bombito” the matador, resulting in countless new ways for players to customize their in-game Bomberman. Other characters include Alien Bomber, Bomb the Fool, Bomberbell, Flower Bomb, Debbie Downer, Bomber X, and Bomb of Doom. Check out the gallery for a first look at the other characters!
- * Two Additional Levels – New arenas include “Medieval Times,” a level in which bombs and sorcery collide and that allows players to select any gimmick they want, and “Full Tilt,” a level set at a racetrack which features speed circles that dictate how fast players move.
- * One New Game Mode – “Bomb Shelters” will allow players to hide from explosions in a small, fireproof building.
- * Two New Leaderboards – Dominate the competition on two new ranking systems on the Xbox LIVE® network. The new leaderboards will track performance on both a weekly and an all-time basis for the speed circle gimmicks on the new “Full Tilt” map.
So what's the damage? The Bomb-Up Pack 2 is expected to around on September 26 and will cost 250 Microsoft Points. Full disclosure: Destructoid does not make a penny on the game, it was an exchange of services for advertising on our site. We're really happy to have Destructoid's first appearance in a video game and hopefully other forward-thinking studios will consider giving us a little cameo in the future. Hey Cliffy, can we sneak Dtoid on a little dirty flyer in Gears?
Check out screenshots of the new levels and concept art for the game in the gallery below. Thanks for everyone who stayed up tonight to check out the announcement and I hope to see you on LIVE in a green helmet soon!
-Niero
PS. I'm leaving for Tokyo in six hours and I haven't packed shit! I will be visiting the Tokyo Game Show and also Hudson Headquarters in Japan over the next couple of days, should be fun! See you in a little bit.
