Glenn Beck has clearly gotten a taste for blood, as he
continues his temporary crusade against
Grand Theft Auto -- and it WILL be temporary, as he'll get bored of it when his viewers do. Here we see him talking to Dr. Cheryl Olson, co-author of
Grand Theft Childhood, and as you can tell from his flabbergasted face, Beck seems quite disappointed that she's an expert who, for once, is NOT saying things he agrees with.
It's quite enjoyable watching him struggle to find a way to twist the argument back into the "GTA is evil" sentiment after Dr. Olson undermines his entire point. His shallow attempts to cash in on the controversy (ironic that HE's the one who says "M" stands for "Money") come to a head when he randomly, for no reason, blurts this little gem of wisdom out during the interview:
I will tell you that all these video gamers… they’re bloggers, as well as video gamers - they’re writing all kinds of stuff about me [that] I’m the enemy now of video gamers. I could care less about video games. Video game bloggers? They’re losers…
Yup, that's us. The very same bloggers you guys rely on to look trendy and cool nowadays are losers. I'm not even offended by that, actually. If Mr. Beck wants to tar an entire blogging industry with the loser-brush, that's his business. Our business, however, is posting a YouTube of his stupid ramblings so we can all get hits off it, without providing a single shred of a f*cking rating to CNN.
So suck that one down, mate.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I have no idea what purpose that served. Especially Beck's rant about bloggers, it was completely out of context. wtf.
Some of these CNN personalities belong on Weasel News.
This would make his whole argument null and void. But researching topics before you talk about them on national television just doesn't seem to happen anymore.
Maybe he has a point. I only watched someone play GTA4 last week for about half an hour and imagine my surprise to wake up this morning and realise my arm had fallen off.
*end of sarcasm*
I think we've seen just about every agrument anti-videogames "crusaders" can throw at us haven't we?
Most of them can be proved wrong by one simple fact. I haven't killed anyone. I don't think I know anyone that's killed anyone but if I do it wouldn't be because of videogames. It would be because of alcohol.
Make way for the new generation of super smart bio altard super human children!
Does this mean If I was to have an annoying little breat of my own I will suddenly forget how to opreate all electonic equipment?!
oh god well there is another reason for me to put any child I may have up fro adoption as soon as possible.
Well damn my friend has a kid and he can still play hell he must not have much time left before he turns into one of them!
his kid will be smarter than him to figure out the complexty of pushing the 4 buttons on a gamepad and move d-pads and sticks.
At least it;s not mechwarrior where the is 25 + keys that must be pushed to piliot your mech that is for the next gen super human childern!
Oh man just wait until kids get to Steel Battalion and it's 20 pound controlers they will have robot bodies and theere brains will be encased in transparent jars to operate such a game!
Compared to say..
God of War, where the violence is insane and there is actual nudity.
This is why I don't watch television news anymore.
I'm glad I live in Australia now, while we do get edited down video game violence, at least we don't get douche bag idiots talking about violence in video games and about video games in general when they have absolutely no idea what the fuck they are talking about.
compared to the common controler of a game console.
the device known as the "child proof cap" created by the goverment to protect childern by being so complicated a child of certain age can not open it, yet is made for an adult to figure out with ease in goverment testing for a set amount of time.
So the adult in the same test when givin a device known as "common game controler" gives up before picking up the object letting the child win by default in it's operation?
So if an adult wanted to open a child proof cap bottle and wanted to see the contents of said bottle would be something the adult does not want the child to come in contact with.....
They would not try to operate the child proof cap and void all knowlage of it's contents and give it to the child and allow said child time to learn how to open the child proof cap and gain acesss and contect to it's contents since the adult did not know how to opreate the cap?
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3639/what_gamers_want_family_gamers.php
Gamasutra posted a study recently involving families with younger children, and the parents often commented on the complexity of the controls; I'm specifically referring to sections 3 and 4 of that article. As for your "child proof cap", I'm afraid that I'm having trouble seeing exactly what you're trying to get at.
Best let him report on other bullshit. Perhaps the 'Black Music' causing kids to shoot each other... or Iron Man fooling kids into thinking that if they cover themselves in foil they can, infact, fly.
I find it really weird that everyone keeps citing 'Picking up hookers and killing them with the baseball bat' as one of the deplorable acts in the game, every time someone mentions that I automatically think - "you haven't played the game".
The importance of video games and the continuing increase in the cultural importance of them is the biggest fear of these older generation people, they can barely keep up with the internet, throw video games into the mix and their heads will just explode.
How many of these kids are opening child proof caps!? oh my god they are super human! it's all that UV rays from the ozone layer going awyway.
Just think if they get into other things like train sets! what will the parents do they will not be able to work it and the kids will start a mini economy world wide micro shipping of ants to ant farms around the world and make millions to fund there robotic bodies!

Also, I think Cube is pointing out the irony that parents can open a "child-proof" cap, but somehow wouldn't be able to operate a game controller. Thus saying that it is ridiculous that a cap that their kids cannot open is not too complex, but the parents learning to play games their children play to judge the content for themselves is too complex.
I THINK that was his point.
Meh, I've seen worse reports. He was so all over the place he barely had a point - seriously? leprosy? - and what little point he did have she canceled out quite well.
She's no Tanya Byron though. (*fap* *fap *fap*)
At no point when then came out and I was in like pre- school or kindergrarten did I ever get the "A- button" confused with the word A and said A" sound rather than "AH" and neither did any other kids I was with so... If it was not a problem then why is the wii "A button" a threat to all children reading english text?
as this womoan states in the article.....
"An interesting example was the use of spelling in tutorials. One parent remarked, "I spend all day enunciating letters phonically to help my little girl at school, and then all my hard work is undone by the game joining up all the letters again." These kids are being taught to pronounce letters the way they sound in words rather than (as used to be the case) as abstract concepts. For example, they are taught to pronounce "a" as an "ah" rather than as an "A" sound."
What?! You know how muched I looked at the A buttons of controlers my whole life and I always knew it was the A button. Not anything else.
What are these new parents smoking? I was never taught any of this and I could tell what the correct terms are the entire time.
Apperently the super human children don't have logic chips in the robot bodies!
About the way society is heading, but to pin it all on GTA 4 undermines his whole point.
Take the hip hop music scene*.Every other song is about guns, bitches and money and it has a whole scene built up around it thats based largly on bravado and violence.
Now im not saying everyone who listens to hip hop is going to join they're nearest gang and start busting caps in peoples asses, but that scene promotes violence and disrespect to women a 100 fold over the gaming scene, so why not focus on that?
I mean, most standard hip hop nowadays covers the same aspects, where as a gamer could go from playing GTA 4 to playing something as in-offensive as Parappa the rapper.
Don't think im singling out hip hop as the root of all evil but thats just one of the many things that springs to mind.
But also I'd like to point out, while flicking through the channels last night i came across (bad choice of words) a TV program about sex that left NOTHING to the imagination. Now atleast games have a rating, TV stations just think that all children magically dissapear off to bed at 9pm.
Ya know, everyday i feel a little more like mary whitehouse :-/
There are so many grammatical errors, I think my mind has been broke. I think I witnessed a couple spelling errors too...
Oh GOD! Did I write properly? I'm so confused.
I wish I was joking... I'd getting dizzy...
How come this clown is on television? Shouldn't he be handing out soft drinks on the local 7-11?
Tell me when an educated person is talking shit, then I'll give a damn.
Also, he looks like a douchebag
Oh yeah and i don't beat hookers with a baseball bat, I use a knife or a pistol.
btw.
As far as I'm concerned, they are all just talking heads.
Boy, this lady is awesome, though. Seriously, I'm glad she's out there to make good points like this.
