Just-announced PS3 system software v2.36 is out [update] photo
     Firmware

Less than eight hours ago, we brought you the news that Sony would be updating the PS3’s system software to version 2.36 “soon.” Well, they weren’t kidding; PS3 owner (and Vent lifer) cjpkiller let us know around 11:30 PM EDT last night that the v2.36 update was available for download through the ‘System Update’ option in the Settings tab of the XMB.

I just downloaded and installed the new software update myself. For a minor update -- it’s aimed at “improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles” -- it sure took its time. I clocked the download at 16 minutes, and the installation took an additional three and a half minutes.

At this point, as with all firmware updates, v2.36 is only available through the XMB. It takes some time (usually about a day) for Sony’s official site to be updated; right now, only version 2.35 is available for download.

I gotta believe that your problems playing that decade-old copy of PaRappa the Rapper -- if you were having any -- have now disappeared.

[Much obliged, cjpkiller]

[Update: According to Y0j1mb0, Sony has also released the v4.0 firmware update for the PSP. I can’t verify this myself, since I don’t own a PSP, but Dtoid’s resident geezer is a trustworthy source. As for downloading the v2.36 PS3 update from the Internet and updating your console that way, ParaParaKing has graciously provided a direct link to the update file (apparently, it’s already available on the Japanese PlayStation Web site). Thanks, guys!]

I hate these mini firmware updates. since they couldn't just throw this one in with version 2.40 I'm guessing it'll be a loooong wait till it comes around =/.

I would like Sony to say, what they exactly changed and not just vague information. Especially since this update wasn't as small as that single footnote.

BTW: Looks like the update is already available for download on the japanese PS3 page: Directlink to Update

Well knowing Sony we will have updates 2.37, 2.38, 2.39, 2.39a, 2.39b, and 2.39c before we get to 2.40

and who actually updates their PSP with what Sony releases, It's homebrew all the way.

All these small updates kind of suck. I hated it on the PSP and I'm not a big fan on the PS3. It's so inefficient and slow, too.

And now I'm prepared to be called a Sony hater because I've said something negative about their beloved console.

@vexed alex: SONY HATER! BURN HIM! BURN HIM!

Srsly, I don't think anybody likes frequent updates with no real content, but it only takes a small amount of time and you don't have to do it at once. (Well actually I do, because I'm crazy...)

@Merry Ho: I don’t think so. The way I understood yesterday’s PlayStation.Blog post, there’s going to be a v2.36 update (already here), and the v2.40 update will follow soon afterward.

@vexed alex: See, I’m a fan of the incremental updates. It seems strange to do things the way Microsoft does — having only four or so major updates in a year (one for each season). If the fixes/new features/updates are ready, why wait until the next seasonal patch? Why not bring them to the users at that moment?

If you're going to bring them to the users at that moment then at least make them less painful. I don't know how Microsoft does it but those things take up seconds of my life and they actually have real changes in them.

This distaste for Sony's method also comes from having to constantly update my PSP for security reasons. Meaning, destroying homebrew. Basically updates that wouldn't affect me and just waste my time.

Vexed Alex: Nintendo and Microsoft do the EXACT same thing with the Wii and 360, for the exact same reasons, just maybe not as often. I still have a 1.50 PSP that can play every single new game and homebrew, you just gotta know what you're doing.

I don't like that there's a minor FW update when a major one is around the corner. Is the issue *that* pressing that Sony couldn't have waited?

Is this only for PS One games? I'd sure like them to fix the PS2 Ratchet and Clank series for emulation on EU 60GB systems. Oh and Jak 1, thats slow too.

Oh, Wrath. I'm sorry for insulting your favorite console. Really, I am. I'm sorry I've gotten used to better and quicker downloads that actually do something to my machine.

In case you didn't notice, there was an update a couple of weeks before Grand Theft Auto 4 that was released for better Live stability. There are a few updates that get sprinkled through the year aside from the 2 large ones. They don't bother me at all because they take about 30 seconds, but it's OK. You go on defending mediocrity.

See, the difference between me and you is that I'm not going to get mad because you brought up the 360's problems. I know they're there and I've bitched about them. I wrote up two blogs dedicated to my hatred towards Microsoft's incompetence. I know the 360's hardware is a piece of shit, but you obviously have some freakish love with your console. And I'm the child.

Do yourself a favor and spend some time away from your video game console for a bit.

the description was a vague "stability for ps games" but did it occur to anyone, that it might be prepping for 2.40? i mean, that is a logical conclusion, considering in game xmb was never meant to run on the freaking thing. it would suck if they dropped 2.40 and it was glitchy and ran crappy. besides, i don't see what the big f-ing deal about in game xmb is. i have a 360 as well, and i'm glad the ps3 is different. it's like they're dedicating a whole team to the update, when thay could be cooking up features that are ps3 exclusive. one of the things that pisses me off about xb live is people can stalk you, and bother you mid game. i hate that. i remember when the only way to play multiplayer was to have your buddy right next to you. and all these babies are whining that they have to quit game to check on friends.

I'd complain about other things, but it wouldn't make a difference because your butthole would still pucker up in anger. It's all really pointless with you.

I'm done arguing with a fanboy. I should have been done a while ago, actually. It's pretty silly that I kept on.

The Wrath,

I'm sorry but I absolutely have to agree with Vexed on this one... I've got the PS3 and the 360 as well, and I gotta say that I don't understand how Sony does it to make those updates so damn slow, I mean there's more people on XBlive and yet their updates take only a few seconds, longest one I've had was 5 minutes...

Also about the "pay to play" well I consider the fact that you're forced to buy a 80$ headset to talk online quite on par with pay-to-play ( no the usb-one is a retarded option, why else would you get a wireless controller? ) plus its the exact same scheme the previous xbox used when they introduced Live :-)

And the rumble? Don't even get me started on that :p I love the PS3 as a console, but not having rumble is a fucking joke! Now I've got a rumble controller ( imported from the US because Sony won't even let me buy one in Europe ) and I gotta say, sony's rumble is like a fart compared to the 360-controllers earthquakes... I tried it on the GRID-demo to level the field and it obvious that the 360-controller's rumble feature is a lot more active and actually drags you into the game more... (you feel the shifting of gears a lot better on the 360 then on PS3 )

I mean you gotta admit, trying to talk about these errors and even claiming that not being able to see who's online while you're in a game is the greatest thing since sliced bread is just utterly retarded :p

The PS3 is a brilliant machine with some very great games ( MGS4 being the most obvious example ) but it has some serious flaws too... If you can't admit to that, you're a fanboy! :-)

@mistic: $80 headset? Huh? The average Bluetooth headset costs between $30 and $50, and you can get them for less if you know where to look. And the great thing about a Bluetooth headset is that it can be used with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone in the car, so I won’t get any tickets!

@Samit Sarkar & The Wrath:
seriously I am not kidding you, the only PS3-bluetooth headsets that are available here in Belgium are 80 euros. ( in gamestores that is) it either that or a usb-cable one which is ridiculous since then you still have a cable hanging across the living room :-)

The result is most of europe psn-gamers are quite silent... making the 80 euro purchase even harder to justify :-) I still gotta get into the PS3-FNF here on dtoid but up until now I've only ever heard 1 guy through my headset :-(

@ The Wrath

I seriously had no idea that I would have to update my PS3 for 3 hours the first day i got it, would I have known, I prolly wouldn't have gotten it after all, the massive amount of incredibly slow downloads seriously hurt my gaming experience since I've had a couple of times where I just have like 30/60 minutes to play and I end up having to play the 360 since the PS3 is updating...

It was the same with the rumble for me, I was so exited when I finally got my dualshock 3 controller from my mate who went to NY but then it was just such a faint rumble that I was really dissapointed by it. It still a million times better then without it! I love my PS3 even more now, but the issues that I experience with it are just a tad too annoying for me to recommend it over a 360 to friends, I'm still telling all my mates to go with a 360 nowadays, online is a lot more vibrant and "just works", games-library is awesome and its a hell of a lot cheaper 360 premium is 249 euros here, compared to 399 euros for 40Gb PS3, that's 150 Euros ( = 233.26500 U.S. dollars ) difference! and I feel that at the moment the PS3 isn't worth that extra price yet ( especially since we can't get rumble controllers yet! )

@Mistic:
Couldn't you just get Warhawk which comes with a bluetooth headset? I know what you mean about spending that much on a headset though. It really put me off playing online with my PS3 until I saw some good headsets on sale at hmv just in time for Metal Gear Online :-D

I was a bit annoyed that this update isn't the in game XMB one after hearing about it and seeing that a system update was available grrrrrr!
