Jordan Mechner reveals eagle-punching Karateka will make its return to gaming

     Comic-Con

During a panel at this week's San Diego Comic-Con, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has revealed that a new version of his hit Apple II title, Karateka, is in the works.

The original game featured groundbreaking animation, and put players in the gi of a karate master trying to rescue a princess from the deadly clutches of Akuma (no Street Fighter relation). Players had an attack selection of three punches and three kicks, each which could be delivered at different heights; this was also groundbreaking at the time. At one point, the player was forced to battle an eagle using hand-to-hand combat, which will always and forever be considered bleeding edge.

"I can safely say it's not going to be in the way you expect," Mechner said of the game's return.

Well, if it's a kart racer or first-person brawler, that damned eagle better make its return or no sale.

Haha, that guy got spanked at the end of that clip. Never even heard of this game before reading this. I never had the misfortune of having an Apple II growing up, heh. It does remind me of the original Price of Persia game for PC though. I wonder if they will keep it 2D and just revamp the graphics and moves or do a complete 3D Sands of Time like revival. Interesting he wants to bring life to such an odd forgotten game.

:O I have this game on my Atari 7800... It's so bad that it's unplayable. It's not even like, funny bad it's just painful to play.

I had this for my Atari. It was ass loads of hard. I could never get past that damn eagle thing. It always kicked my ass. The one other thing I remember was that you walked slower than a dwarf with spinal ebifida so you had to run to every fight, but if you didn't slow down before getting kicked in the face it was instant death.
Kinda funny though.

This was a hit? I've played hand-held games from the 80's that were more fun than this looks.

I wonder how the selection process for remakes is done.

I support this idea fully. Make it so, Mr. Mechner.

Holy hell, happy days! This is easily one of my all time favorite's from back in the day. (damn I really am that old?) Reading through a number of magazines over the past couple months they have had these little blurbs about what games should make a comeback (what with bionic commando and other crap coming soon) and NOT one of them mentioned this all time favorite.
