Also, the coolest thing in the original was the option of bowing to your opponent. Very classy.
I hope this one keeps up!
I'd put up the ability to commit suicide at the very start of the game as the coolest thing.

Jordan Mechner is remaking Karateka for XBLA and PSN
One of the most startling games of the 80's was Karateka, a martial arts action title by Jordan Mechner. At the time of its release, the fluid animations and dramatic elements were a huge leap from where most videogames were and laid the groundwork for the game Mechner is best known for, Prince of Persia. Now, Mechner has announced that he's returning to feudal Japan to remake Karateka for modern consoles, with plans for the title to release this year on the download services. This marks the first time that the designer has taken an active role in development since Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is bound to get people salivating a little bit. Karateka was a great game back in 1984, but it's also a pretty dull one by modern standards. It's not the sort of thing that, even when I'm at my most nostalgic, I think would be a fun way to spend an afternoon. Hopefully Mechner still has it in him to spice that up. Did you know? Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)Great! While I've never been a "fan" of Karateka, I've always thought it was interesting with its style of combat and cinematic feeling. Great stuff to expand in the remake.
Also, the coolest thing in the original was the option of bowing to your opponent. Very classy. I really like Karateka, in a Urban Champion sort of way. It's not aged well, but it's got pretty interesting AI for an old game, and the twist at the end is a classic.
I hope this one keeps up! I wonder how the controls will be handled. That is, if the old system will be replicated, or if it'll be remade to accommodate modern controllers. Well if the guy sucessfully updated Prince of Persia, I believe he's going to do something great with Karateka too. Because damn, the only enjoyable thing about it now is the way the camera cuts to the bad guy and then goes back to you. Otherwise it's unplayable. Good-lord,this-game-was-hard.or-at-least-it-seemed-like-it-at-the-time.I-imagine-most-readers-on-the-site-are-too-young-to-have-heard-of-this-one IMO, he should get in touch with folks who have actual experience developing fighting games. Personally, I'd love to see him collaborate with Sega-AM2 on this and take some tips from the VF team. I really can't judge this before we've seen anything more. Mechner is cool and all but I sense there was much more behind Sands of Time then just him, and Karateka could really go in any direction. I loved me some Karateka back in the day. Had it on Apple II+ with a green/black monochrome monitor. "Also, the coolest thing in the original was the option of bowing to your opponent. Very classy."
