John Mayer is not a Guitar Hero fan photo

I’ve always wondered what musicians thought of music/rhythm games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Like, do they feel as if it’s a shoddy knockoff and an insult to their life’s work? Or do they think it’s really cool to let everyone feel like a rock star, and do they wish their music was in it?

Five-time Grammy winner (and Rolling Stone-sanctioned “New Guitar God”) John Mayer is apparently in the former camp. According to CVG (via Entertainment Wise), Mayer told Rolling Stone that he is anti-Guitar Hero because he feels that it makes it easy for people to pretend that they’re, well, actual guitar heroes:

Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it. And having done both, there’s nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?

I absolutely love John Mayer’s music -- I own his first EP and his three studio albums, and I saw him in concert twice last year -- but I’ve always been annoyed and angered by what I like to call the “go play a real instrument” people. I’ve been playing the guitar for about six or seven years now, and while I agree with Mayer in principle -- that the feeling obtained from mastering a song in a music videogame doesn’t come close to the elation you get from doing so on the real instrument -- I also understand that it’s a game, and I don’t see any problem with letting regular people feel like they’re rocking out. After all, isn’t that what videogames are all about? Living vicariously?

In any case, this saddens me, because I’ve always wanted to see some of John Mayer’s music in Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Oh well. For some reactions from my colleagues, hit the jump.

[Via Entertainment Wise by way of CVG -- thanks, Adam!]

Adam Dork: Don’t most musicians have trouble playing Guitar Hero? Maybe he is just upset that they wouldn’t include any of his songs in the game.

Chad Concelmo: What a jerk! John Mayer, I mean, not you, Samit. :) :) :)

Samit Sarkar: I actually agree with him, in a way. I mean, the “go play a real instrument” people always pissed me off, but he’s right -- I play the guitar as well as Guitar Hero / Rock Band, and strumming away is pure bliss. Plus, it totally gets me all the hot chicks.*

*Claim unverified

Also, how could you call him a jerk? He’s so dreamy...

Nick Chester: This claim is bullshit, and there’s no comparing the two. It's like Larry Bird calling shit on NBA Live, or Mario Andretti talking shit about Gran Turismo. I can play guitar, bass, drums (poorly), and can sing. I have done all of those things with human beings, including studio recording and live shows (clearly never to the extent or success of Mayer, mind you). I’m not using one experience to replace the other or give myself a false meaning of talent or purpose any more than I think GTA IV has prepped me for a life of networking with criminals.

I don’t mind Mayer, and he’s a talented, generally funny and seemingly likeable dude. But this is just stupid, and I think even he probably knows that.

Colette Bennett: He sounds like a raving douchelord to me.

Alan “Gameboi” Johnson: Mayer can play the hell out of a guitar, but I agree with Nick on this one (even if I can’t play in real life). What the man said was self-righteous bullshit.

+2 to Colette for using the phrase "raving douchelord." <3

As for Mayer, I absolutely hate his music, but he himself seems like a sort of cool guy, surprisingly. (Not to mention, you gotta give him props for the hot celebrities he somehow manages to date.) I understand what he's saying -- if I had to choose between being good at Guitar Hero and being a good guitar player, I'm choosing the real guitar hands-down -- but he's a fool to condemn the game altogether.

Wow, people are getting upset because he said he prefers playing the real instrument to playing GH. He never said anything bad about the people who chose to play it, just that it gives you the guitar playing experience without putting work into it. He just thinks that ACTUALLY playing the guitar gives you a better feeling, like how actually driving a Ferrari would feel much better than just driving a go-kart. There's nothing wrong with driving the go-kart, and it's bloody fun, but it's probably more fun to go 180 mph.

@ DibbityDan

He seems to assume that people who play this game would be inclined to learn to play the guitar in the first place, and that those who are so inclined play this game as a substitute for the real thing. I don't know about you, but that seems pretty fucking dumb to me.

I think it's safe to assume that we all know that you don't get better at doing things in your everyday life by playing videogames based on those activities, and that those of us who play Guitar Hero do so simply because it's fun.
In my case, the level of interest that I had in learning to play the guitar was not altered a single bit by having played this game. It was firmly rooted at zero both before and after I began playing it.

This game changed nothing for me, nor did it cheapen anything. Guitar Hero is nothing more to me than a fun rhythm game, and any concerns over skill that I might have both begin and end at getting good at the game itself. I don't think that skill translates to the real thing, and I honestly can't imagine that too many other people really do either. It's ludicrous.

Interestingly enough, it's Mayer himself who is making too much out of Guitar Hero. We all know it's a videogame, while he probably doesn't even know what videogames are all about. If he did, he might understand Guitar Hero's appeal, rather than be moved to bitch about it for reasons that are all in his head.

As for Mayer himself, why should he be let off the hook because he's great? Stupid statements are stupid no matter who you are.

Of course all that rests on whether or not the part about him being anti-Guitar Hero wasn't just a crock of shit tacked on in order to put quote in a negative context.

"Maybe I'm just being a prick again, but I do think games like GH can alter people's approach to learning guitar,"

If that means hitting your guitar like a conga randomly, sure.

GH has nothing to do with guitars or how they work. All you're doing in GH is hitting arbitrary buttons to trigger playback of a pre-recorded chunk of sound. They could just as easily have made the input device a drum, an NES Power Pad (remember those?), or just a normal console control pad. The game does not include a single shred (pun intended) of stringed instrument technique.

Just building up the muscles and agility to play a simple scale on a stringed instrument often takes longer than the entire development cycle and shelf life of these games.

What would be cool is a "game" using a real guitar with actual fingering, bending, muting, and picking etc. But that would mean you have to learn to play guitar to get good at the game, which typically takes many years, so it becomes a different beast, the "educational game".

The whole comparison is an amateurish misnomer, since you certainly can't actually play music with GH skills. You can only trigger back someone else's playing within the confines of the game. It's not a guitar game, it's a game based strictly on timing, using a bunch of buttons on a plastic thing shaped arbitrarily like a guitar.

The whole debate we're having is based on a non-existent issue.

Better to just play the game and have fun.

Actually, I have to argue with you on that point.

Guitar Hero helped me with finger dexterity on chords because of strange stretches, and has helped me with picking speed immensely.

Number of John Mayer songs out of the 2620 songs in my collection: 0

Number of Guitar Hero games I've owned: 3

I think I can declare a winner from that alone.

The Ferrari analogy is a very poorly-thought-out one though. Does he think he can handle a high-end Ferrari at top speed? Sure, he can probably control it at School Zone speeds, but by that logic, I can play the beginning of Sweet Child of Mine using only hammer-ons and pull-offs on a guitar. That doesn't mean I'm better suited for guitar playing, nor does it mean he's ready to progress past the amusement park car-on-a-rail ride.

Oh well. It's not worth the effort to try to get people like Mayer to "get" games.

He gets to nail Jessica Simpson on a gradually normal basis and play a real guitar on stage in front of thousands of fans. You get to rub one out to Maxim photos of Jessica Simpson and play a plastic guitar for a rhythm-based video game with at most, five to ten of your drunken cohorts.

Face it, he wins.

To the people being critical of Mayer’s music: yeah, his early stuff — especially his first album (Room For Squares), but also his second one (Heavier Things) on some tracks — is very poppy, but then he started going on tour with talented guitarists like Eric Clapton, and he immersed himself in the blues.

Then he put out Continuum in 2006, and while there’s a little pop-rock stuff on there to satisfy his female fanbase, most of that album is straight-up skill in terms of guitar playing. But it’s not just the guitar; it’s the music in general. Most of Continuum was much more bluesy, and the lyrics obviously had a lot of thought put into them (so I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you, Orcist). I mean, if you want to hate on his earlier pop stuff, then fine; I never liked “Your Body Is A Wonderland” much anyway. But you can’t really say the same thing if you’ve listened to his more recent stuff (and don’t forget the all-blues John Mayer Trio).

Also, people, he stopped dating Jessica Simpson a while back. He was dating Minka Kelly (of Friday Night Lights fame) for a while, but now he’s going out with Jennifer Aniston.

I've been playing drums for almost 15 years, and I think the drums in Rock Band are brilliant. It's a great beginners course for learning drums, teaches technique, coordination, and playing along with the notes in the game teach timing.
My wife is a pianist, and she loves GH, because it's fun.

see, i find it hard to argue with the man's logic here. first off, it's his opinion. secondly, he likes to ruffle feathers, as he so clearly has with this group of miscreants here. thirdly, and most importantly, the guy has a very valid point. taken from the snippet:

"What would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?"

He's right. it's like masturbation vs. GOOD sex. i mean, it's fun to hit a tennis ball against a wall, but eventually, don't you want a partner to return the ball to you?

This post is based on the flawed assumption that John Mayer is a musician.

John Mayer is a musician in the same way Jack Thompson is a lawyer, or Carlos Mencia is a comedian.

The ferrari vs. go-cart metaphor is actually rather apt, but I'm too distracted by the fact that he is a tremendous douchebag to care. The submerged hostility in his comments almost make it seem like he resents Guitar Hero: "Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it." It's a mother fucking game you dipshit. Imagine if a similar comment was made by a four-star general on CoD: "Call of Duty was devised to bring the soul crushing hardship of man's inhumanity to man to the masses without them having to put anything into it." People don't want to learn to play guitar just to cover some Top 40 songs, and they don't want to start world war three just so they can get some headshots IRL. No asshole thinks they are a genuine motherfucking rockstar anymore than they think they are a superfly fucking commando.

John Mayer should get his head out of his ass and his dick out of the underage tweens that flock to him like he's the mass media messiah and realize that just because you can diddle around on a guitar and jerk off to Clapton doesn't make your opinion, or the vapid bullshit you inundate us with on the radio, at all relevant.

John Mayer is an asshat.

Again @ vonrichter

I didn't really mean it's related to playing guitar from a technical standpoint (i.e. fingering, building chords, learning scales etc), more from the perspective it gives people on music. GH glorifies imitation and technical ability rather than creative talent; solos don't have to be obscenely fast in order to be good, something that many people seem to miss. But yea, it is kind of a minor point; i'm sure that misconception would still exist regardless of games like GH

Actually, I'm a Marine, and I'm really, really upset that all of these fuckface gamers are out there with their FPS "Call of Duty" amusement-park experience and are not actually behind a real weapon shooting real people, because it's just NOT THE SAME. In fact, I directly blame video games for every young gamer who decides to sit in his house in front of his XBOX instead of joining the military. Man, every designer of every FPS ever and every person who ever played it is just the masses experiencing something without going through the rigors of boot camp and the unspeakable horrors of war.

I didn't just start believing this when I joined, either. In my civilian life I was a plumber, and let me tell you, when I see people "experiencing" traveling through pipes, jumping on turtle soldiers' heads and saving princesses, I think it's a shame. A real shame that they're only buying into a mass-culture schema that really took away from my identity and experience as a plumber. Douchebags.

After I finished Halo 3, I thought I was a pretty kick-ass space marine, but then I ran into the real Master Chief at a dive bar (my cable was out and I really wanted to see the Venture Bros season 3 premiere, turns out Chief is a big fan too) and after a few Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters, we got into it because I said I was just the same as him, only without the armor, weapons, and that I didn't want to bone a hologram. Just before the heated debate came to blows, which would've decided who was the ULTIMATE SPACE MARINE, the VB episode began, we bought each other some beers, and that was that.

I just don't understand all the hate. It seemed like a pretty benign comment to me. Actual musicians TEND to prefer to play actual music. Really, the conflict only comes in if a person devotes as much time and mental energy to GH as he would to learning actual guitar. If a person is playing GH for FUN, because it's a GAME, then that's not ever going to happen. I imagine you'll get a lot more pleasure from jamming a few songs in GH for an hour than struggling painfully with a guitar for an hour and throwing into the closet in frustration. If and hour of fun is all you want or have time for, more power to you. Mayer's statement just didn't seem so inflammatory as to deserve such mean responses as it got.

I didn't read the source, though, so for all I know the next thing he said might've been: "And, as you know, all gamers are racist child molesters and hamster-stuffers. I'm sure they perform other sexually deviant acts on innocent children and beasts, but those are the biggies. I hate them all so much. John Mayer... AWAY!" In which case, yeah, roast his ass.
