Jimquisition: Ubisoft

3:00 PM on 02.20.2012   |   Jim Sterling

The Jimquisition has criticized many game publishers, especially Electronic Arts. Jim Sterling's wise judgements have been just and fair, but not altogether inclusive. EA isn't the only weasel in the lavatory, and it's high time that Ubisoft got a kick up the arse for its litany of crimes. The EA of Europe thinks nobody has caught onto its BS, but one man has.

One man has the insight that everybody else in the whole world lacks. God bless that man.

Brutal.

More than anything else, Ubisoft's tactless baiting of Beyond Good and Evil fans has turned me against them. That shit with Rayman Origins, which is a fine game to be sure, was beyond the pale. Thanks for calling them out on it.

Thank uh... you for you. I think.

Do publishers decide the price of their games? I've heard that the Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft decide the price

meh. Definitely don't like Ubisoft's practices, but they still aren't too bad when it comes to online passes, on disk DLC, day 1 dlc (which really isn't different from on disk dlc), etc, and I think those are the biggest scams of the industry.

Could just be that I've learned to avoid Ubisoft launch titles, and as a non pc gamer, I haven't had too many run ins with Ubisoft's worst offenses, but still, it was fitting that ubisoft was saved for last in the list of being criticized IMO.

Never been a fan of Ubi's games. Bought AC 1 and became bored to tears by the story about half way through so I traded it in. AC 2 came free with my 360 slim and it's somewhat better but the story is still long winded and the control scheme is anally retentive, or to use a more polite term "French".

Ubi gets fuck all money from me so they can DRM themselves into the fiery pits of gaming hell for all I give a shit.

Ubisoft really does need to get it's act together. As someone who purchased Anno 2070 at full price on Steam for like $59.99, then have it tell me that I only get 3 licenses with the game, 2 of which are used up because steam crashed once and for some reason thought I had a new computer. Not only that but then Ubisoft decides to change servers and I cannot access the game whatsoever for a few days because of that bullshit.

So the day I bought it, I thought to myself, should I make 3 clicks and buy Anno 2070 for full retail price to support the developer, or, with 2 clicks I can download the game pirated, and it is free.

I chose 3 clicks and bought the game to support the developer. Now, I have had all sorts of problems, and was not able to use it whatsoever. Those people who decided to make 2 clicks and just download a pirated version for free have been enjoying the game for longer than I have, and with NO hassle either, because the free version (pirated version) is DRM free...
This seems fucked up.

You know, hearing how bad Ubisoft is in the news is one thing, but when you put everything together in one video, it's frustratingly ridiculous what they get away with.

I agree with everything you said. Although Rayman Origins is absolutely worth 60 bucks. Although I can see why someone wouldn't think so, since sidescrolling platformers are generally not worth that much.

Since Ubisoft started their bs "always online" DRM I have bought none of their games, and will continue to do so until they get rid of that crap.

Fortunately they have no games that I am that interested in playing, although I would quite like to have tried out some of the Assassin's Creed games. Either way, I'm done with them until they stop persecuting genuine gamers.

DRM doesn't have to work... it's there because it has to be there. The DMCA and other related laws (in the US and Europe) are based on the act of circumventing DRM, which then becomes a criminal offense.

DRM simply means that there has to be a lock in place in order to claim theft. Without this lock, not only is it much more difficult for a company to pursue a civil case, but there would be no criminal case in the event that the state catches offenders.

Again, it doesn't have to work... at all. The action of having DRM simply reserves the right to pursue legal action should they need to. To not include some form of DRM would simply be stupid from their perspective.

I do worship you Jim.... but this episode was a little weak in my opinion. Oh, and I would worship a lot more if these videos were playable on my iPod Touch and iPad - I hate having to switch to the PC to see them.

To be fair, Jim has said on podtoid that Rayman Origins is worth 60 dollars. I think the point he's trying to make is that it won't SELL for 60 dollars and they pretty much cannibalized the sales by not making it cheaper.

Bullshit. On the Vita, Sony allows publishers to price games at 20 and 30 dollars, and they could have made the game a downloadable psn title.

@ Elsa

I'm not sure that's true. The DMCA, for all intents and purposes, allows for the breaking of your machine by copyrighted material; it allows for content distributors/creators/owners to implement systems that keep whatever you use to experience that content from functioning in the manner in which they were designed. Compact discs that resist ripping/copying, DVD's that resist being played through any kind of VCR/ can only be played through a direct connection to the TV, etc.

The biggest deal there being that actively subverting these anti piracy measures became a crime. They could prosecute you for copyright infringement before the DMCA, but the DMCA allowed for the prosecution of simply working around their anti piracy measures for any reason. Its that hyper-broadening of what is considered a crime that opponents of the bill cite most often.

They don't need anti piracy measures to prove their was a crime any more than a shop keep can be alowed to get robbed because he didn't lock his door. However, adding those anti piracy measures wildly broadens what they can prosecute, under the DMCA.

That's how I understand it, anyway.

The reason they keep doing the DRM dance is to cover their asses. The suits ask them "what are you doing to ensure the protection of our IP from thieves?" then, they can just say that they have DRM X in place to protect the said IP. They know it does not work but, they cant just say "yeah we´re gonna release this game DRM free to show customers we appreciate them"... That would get whoever is answering to the board, booted quite quickly.

Also, I am against DRM of any kind. Thought I´d add that here just in case...

I totally agree, I love that game so much, I was talking more about the franchise in general recently, with those stupid rabbit games, I'm so glad they're no longer tainting rayman with that.

Rayman Origins was definitely worth £40, no question about it.

A-friggin-men, Jim!

Ubisoft is becoming my most hated company. I used to complain about Activision and Capcom but at least Activision's games work! (at least the first-party titles that is). I played the Prince of Persia HD collection and it's glitched on me over 10 TIMES!! Twice at the end of Warrior Within so I had to start the game over twice!

Also, the DRM is a big reason why I won't touch any PC games by Ubisoft (thankfully there aren't that many I want).

Oh yeah, and what they did to Rayman Origins was unforgivable. Toss that game to the friggin' lions? Assholes. Probably one of THE best games in years and it's pinned up against 10,000 other games. Ugh.

Every point you made in the video is spot-on. Completely agree. Hate Ubisoft with a passion.

Did you just say 40 "cliting" times Jim? as in "clit" you know as part of female genitalia? If so, that is the most creative sexual way to describe a despicable mark up of a price of a video game I have ever heard. Also, if you are God then you must wield a banana and penetrate those French Ass fucks in all of their orifices at Ubisoft! That's the only way I'll worship you!

Sometimes I think I'm the only sane gamer who sees the shit Ubi and its demonic cohorts pull... then I see vids like this I realise I'm not the only one, thank fuck. And thats the the thing, Ubi and the other shitty Publishers out there aren't gonna change themselves, the only way they ever do that, is when they are forced to by gamers not taking it in the butt anymore.

I didn't listen to the Jimqusition and I really didn't need to! All I needed to see was 'Ubisoft' in the title to respond. :D

For me, EA was the biggest doucheberry pub out there due to killing split screen in every m********g game that they release! Actually, I am still pissed that SSX does not have split screen. I digress though. Ubisoft has topped my shit list in the past few months more than any other pub out there. It could be for the same reasons Jim said in podcast or it could be completely different! Doesn't really matter the reason, all that matters is that Ubi is really f***ng things up and it needs to stop!

It has been said a thousand times before and I am going to say it again because it apparently is not getting through to Ubi: Stop with the shittastic DRM!! It has never worked and it never will! End of story. Ubi can say that it works all they want to, but every damn gamer knows that it does not as any of can sift through the internet and find ANY Ubi game available without the craptastic DRM they impose on their paying customers. Not to mention recently they moved servers so, for certain paying customers, we could not play a game we paid for just because Ubi thought it would be just f***ng great that we all had to be online to play a damn single player game.

Seriously, that part really pissed me off! I paid for Heroes 6 and I should have been able to play it uninterrupted period! If this is the shit we get to look forward to as gamers, they can kiss my fat monkey ass!

Everything I knew and loved as a gamer is slowly going down the shitter! No split screen, shitty DRM, day one DLC, online passes, etc.. It all sucks! I really really hope that we have a game crash again only because I am so tired of these money hungry cocksuckers fucking up my gaming!! :D
