Piracy will never be destroyed entirely. It's a fact of life that some people just like to help themselves to freebies. However, not all pirates are in it for the discount, and some are actively driven to piracy by the very companies attempting to kill it. When you make your product harder to obtain and enjoy, all you do is breed an environment where pirates can thrive.

DRM doesn't work is a flawed argument as people INSIDE the industry has repeatedly told people outside the industry who still believe Tetris PSMini is $10. DRM in a game leads pirates online to pirate the game and yes, there is no stopping this. However, DRM as a platform to stop the casual piracy DOES work. Ubisoft takes shit for their DRM practices however, when they removed DRM, they saw their torrent based piracy increase threefold and their casual piracy (aka, Hey, wanna borrow, burn, and play this copy of Prince of Persia) increase tenfold. And this is just the people dumb enough to connect online with the software they stole. I could pick the rest of this argument apart (Netflix is on more platforms than iTunes) further but really, who has the time to invest hours, literally, not knowing what the hell they're talking about?

And oh yes, before someone thinks I've somehow managed to betray myself, keep in mind, I mean I have casual understandings of the points going forward. Aka, I would have to do actual research to talk further about these issues in order to speak with any authority, and I'm just taking a Painter XI break.

I actually really dig Steam. The constant sales and the safe, secure connections make PC gaming insanely easy. No more disc swapping and updates that require me to wait. I can just boot Steam, go to work and have everything 100% updated when I get back.

I don't think that pirating games is easy, at least not as easy as music or films. It's not impossible, per se, but sometimes it's way more effort than it's worth. Sure, I could download Skyrim or CoD but in return I'd get an whole load of bugs, glitches and little oddities that really aren't worth putting up with.

http://geeksrevolt.blogspot.com/2012/01/survival-of-laziest.html

At the end of the day, it all boils down to respect. Publishers want to imply that the DRM measures are all about respect for the people creating the games, but that's an absolute crock of bullshit.

The world needs rid of it's fucking con artist middlemen.

Since Global Warming increased by the decrease in number of pirates in the world, one can assume it works the other way, too. (Meaning that Pirates=Captain Planet?)

I can practically see this 'reasoning' as an excuse for big corporations to contribute to air pollution and deforestation. They get to dump their waste by-products where ever, when ever and reduce the number of pirates in the process?
The Flying Spaghetti Monster must love big business more than he loves pirates.

So just like buying skyrim at launch :P

Seriously tho, I can honestly say DRM and Online Passes have turned me away from so many games over this gen it isn't funny ~.~ DLC to a lesser extend. I actually like the DLC that comes off as bonus content as few and far between as it is.... DLC that is blatantly withed from the game not so much. Tho DLC in general has trained me to wait for the cheaper GOTY edition of whatever.

So essentially Everything the industry has done to ensure I buy early and new and etc .... has pushed me to wait to buy, or shoveling my consumer dollars at other publishers/developers (who are arguably IMHO more deserving).

As a general note I tend not to buy used anyhow simply because in most cases saving $3-5 isn't worth it to me. When I do buy used its typically older games and typically on a BXGY sale. Generally I'm more than willing to wait a few months for a price drop. There are a few games that I get launch week/pre-order but those are about as few and far between as non-abusive DLC :P

@Rammstien - If iTunes doesn't make it easier, show me what does.

I just typed in the name of a song, its there, I can tap to pay and download it. Not hard. The syncing is a small pain, but it can be done wirelessly now, so... yeah, not a problem.

@sheppy - You could try to pick it apart point by point, but you'd be arguing with history. And what happens to those that don't learn from history? iTunes, AppStore, Netflix, Hulu and Steam all make things easier on the consumer and do so without showing blatant distrust toward the customer.

You don't pay for music (in a convenient way that supports artists), but demand everyone pays for new games? Either you're being sarcastic and I'm not getting it, or you're a jerk.

Anyway, I can't really blame them for trying to kill piracy, but Jim's right; punishing paying and potential customers is just idiocy.

Jesus is righteous. I kill, nut I kill in the name of Jesus - it's better for all. If Satan didn't exist, I wouldn't kill in the name of Jesus - so it's all entirely justified.

What a load of horseshit.

How about just not fucking buying it and slagging it off to all you encounter.

Pirate in the name of JESUS!

Dress it up all you want - the core of the "defense" is bullshit.

I happily pirated Arkham City recently. Arkham City was placed on Steam for Australians initially for 50 dollars. When I first saw it, it was brilliant. Finally a publisher gets that the AUS dollar is hovering up and down with the US dollar. I said, I'll buy that when my pay comes in.

What do I see when that happens? I drop into steam to see that Arkham City is 100 fucking dollars. The price had doubled from on night to the next, for no forseeable reason. Warner Bros were selling a download to me for 50 dollars one night, double that the next. Not only that, the retail copy of Arkham City was selling for 88 dollars in store. After production of the disc and box, shipped half way across the world and given a markup by the retailer, the download was still more expensive.

So I pirated it, DRM free, at a smaller size, and with all DLC. I'd most certainly do it again.

If services like Netflix, Hulu and Gamefly were available WORLD-WIDE i bet most people would stop downloading.

What i dislike about Itunes (and most online stores) is that they are all Region Specific and this "Region-Differentiating" is just bullshit! What may be available in the US store, is not available in the Swedish store. This is again one of many reasons people download because you dont need to go through any hoops with fake accounts and whatnot. The entertainment industry needs to get off its lazy ass and start improving instead of desecrating the Internet which it would be nothing without!

This concept applies to many other things in this flawed society....

Make drugs illegal, and declare war on them, to ensure drug use, violence and problems remain.

Take away our rights, declare a war on terror, to ensure we will never be free again.

Piracy is only the EXCUSE that government will use to take away freedoms, just as they have done with everything from terrorism, drugs, cigarettes, environmentalism, ect.

They create the PROBLEM.
So that you get a REACTION.
And then they give your their SOLUTION.

Oldest strategy in the book, but we are so ignorant, we make fun of the idea and laugh at anyone that points out the obvious. Lets move beyond this stunted awareness level.

For some reason I always get the impression that destructoid is very pro-piracy. I mean when it's own editors and commenters defend piracy so much, it's common to get this impression.

Instead of defending such a shitty practice, we should unite and think of better ways to fight it.

Pretty much.

Sadly, it's not even the publishers themselves who are behind everything - when it comes down to it, it's the shareholders holding the publishers' strings, which in turn are attached to the developer. 'Cause shareholders don't care about logic or addressing things with reason - they want to come into a meeting, see a paper solution, and walk out again, confident that they'll get their investment back.
On the other hand, the managerial teams of various companies could probably show the shareholders the light of reason if they tried - it's just the chance of putting their jobs on the line that holds them back. Thus, blame may be somewhat equally split between the two - two half-backwards cowboys trying to steer a horse more powerful than they are, with the scent of home in his nostrils.
Things will change, as you said - the sad part is the casualties which will inevitably result from it.

Even if people don't mind putting in a single 30 digit code, I bet people are going to start minding it when every single game has a thirty digit code and a subsequent download before you can play your game.

That's not to mention all of the other criticisms I bring up about online passes, but most people just ignore those and say "just buy ur games new" even if I do.

Upside down and ass-backwards. The music industry was thriving when it had multiple record companies. Now there's 2. And music is disposable garbage. Why? There's no money in it! Are YOU gonna sign a band to a million dollar 3 record deal? You'll never make your money back! Why? No one buys music.

Be careful what you wish for. You'll get EA and UbiSoft and that's it. All other games will be half-assed iPhone or $5.00 downloadable games. You'll get Madden and a Modern Warfare every year and that's it.

I asked a friend if he played Shadows Of The Damned, he says, "Yea, I downloaded it off PB last week. It's awesome!"
What a dick. If you don't support the developers who make these games, why would they make any more?

"Oh, it's all a bunch of rich white guys anyway." No, it's young, very talented people who, I believe, are artists, doing something that is fucking amazing. I love video games, so I buy NEW video games.
