And by this standard Torchlight II's graphics will probably be better than Diablo III's lol.
I don't know, man.
Dungeon Defenders seem to take it a bit too far. Trine and Sonic looked great, the colors fit in. Dungeon Defender just seems like a blast of rainbow paint.
To this day, I still think those SNES games that made use of a vibrant palette are still amazing looking games.
This is why the debate over "power" of the Wii U is beyond retarded. Its Nintendo art direction in HD. It will look lovely.
Not sure what the best looking game of this generation is, but it sure isn't Call of Duty, or any other generic shooter with TUFF DOODS.
STYLE. That's part of the problem with purely 'realistic' graphics. No room for a consistent, unifying art style - because you're trying to exorcise the art out of it. Though a few games like The Witcher 2 manage to do it all.
I liked the Borderlands example, too (it's not cell-shaded, though). Borderlands 2 looks much more colorful, looking forward to it.
For me, I've always liked Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect in terms of visuals, not so much because they have a fair bit of color, but because the animation and art style are distinctive and, to me, timeless. I can still bear to look at the cutscenes in those games because of the animation and art(along with the appropriate voice work) and say it's still just as entertaining to watch as it is to play. In my opinion, great SD animation in Timesplitters conveys so much more than a HD furrowed brow in Mass Effect.
Honorable mentions to Mirror's Edge and PixelJunk Eden, another two games that were just undeniably beautiful because of the use of vibrant colors.
Though I have to disagree about XIII, I was playing it a few weeks ago and it doesn't look that great visually.
To try and be "edgy". It's the same reason why most of your reviews average 3 points below Metacrtic just "coincidentally".
Also: your argument is bullshit. If you think that dirt, dust, grime, destruction, stone, blood, rust, mud, and a plethora of other effects on the darker side of the color palette can't show of what a game's hardware or a display is capable of, you're fucking kidding yourself. Uncharted did both.
Oh yea. Uncharted. Go play those games again. Beautiful jungles *and* the dirt and grime of your typical military shooter. Wide color palette. Great effects. But you can't pick that, because then you have no "hook" for your little videos. That's not "edgy", is it?
And while we're admitting things, I will admit that even for a drab colored game for dude-bro shooting, the graphics in CoD are really good just for how smoothly they run.
None the less, I'm totally with Jim on the need for more color and artistic grace in games. Can't wait till Vanillaware drops an HD bomb.
I wanted my jet grind radios, my zone of the enders, my awesome visual stylings this generation, but instead we kept getting people going after realism.
While like you, i appreciate realism, most games simply can't do a good enough job.
It's a much better idea, artistically at least (sells would argue against it) to make something notable and cohesive.
Unfortunately there's an awesome problem with the masses that as soon as somethings bright and colorful gets noted as "childish."
Which is fucking stupid.
Whats child is disregarding a game because of its color scheme.
I start school to hopefully take a step towards game design career in a few months, and I really, truly hope that this is either a non issue, or i can at least do something that i can put tons of colors in.
I fucking love color.
Also jim, and i really do hope you see this, You want a great testament to bluray?
Up! and Speed Racer are fucking PHENOMENAL on bluray. (imo, most cg shows, how to train your dragon, Kung fu panda, etc. are amazing in bluray and the best testament to how good it can look.)
Also, I of course agree. Colors are why you see pictures of hd tvs showing nature, lots and lots of nature.
The first boss with the green dragon, it's soooo beautiful !
If you have a pc with a fair gpu, and a high end cpu overclocked a bit they all can be in full 1080p with anti aliasing, and such as a bonus.
Some games benefit greatly from looking realistic like Racing Games, Shooters and Sportsgames because there you have gamemechanics that simulate the real world and try to immerse you in that realistic environment stimulating your high detail perception and sense of orientation (back of your brain - burning fat when your body is alcaline), while other games benefit from a more abstract artstyle because it allows for a better overview and thus supports more complex, abstract gamemechanics which challenge your analytical processor (frontal cortex of your brain - burning carbs even if your body is acidic).
I think that Jim is an acidic person, if he would eat more alkaline foods he would burn fat more efficiently and might enjoy realistic graphics a bit more.
