Either way, I'm fine with the issues (camera/controls), and I've played better games with worse problems this generation. Still, not everyone is going to put up with that, so of course, I appreciate the honest opinion! This game is not for everyone -- even back in the day.
TLDR:
"Fans of this genre will still thoroughly enjoy them, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled."
That perfectly explains it!

do you know what the hardest part about in-line skating is?
telling your parents that you're gay.
but seriously, i love this game. i didn't even own a dreamcast, but i bought this game and a VMU so i could play it on my roommate's system. man i played the shit out of this game. for sure gonna pick this one up. SEGA!!!!1!11
It's a case by case basis. Some stuff just falls through the cracks. Unfortunate, but it happens.
I'm sure it does. But that's not what happened here:

"There won't be a re-review of The Witcher 2.
First, we don't review the same games again when they hit other platforms unless there is something new, unique, and exclusive to that specific version on that platform -- essentially making it different than the version that is available on the other platform."
Keep in mind that the very next week after this preview hit there was a review of Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition, which was nothing but a glorified GOTY edition of a previously released title. How does THAT make sense? Reviewing that version of the game completely invalidates what Maurice Tan said.

but i guess each to their own, it is just a shame that this review represents Destructoid.
Oh shit! Next you're gonna be telling me that cockroaches are riddled with diseases...
WAIT THEY ARE!@?!?

#On-Topic
While I never played any Dreamcast days I was a little interested in this and I was hoping to see what were the flaws and aspects and while I do enjoy a pimping soundtrack, clunky controls might keep me from fully enjoying this.
At least my friends who want this game will be happy that the gameplay itself is untouched.
Though what do you expect from a HD Re-Release.
Eh. Other times, there are so many whiners in the comments who feel justice hasn't been served until a game gets re-reviewed with a score they are satisfied with, so the editors may not want to give in to demands with clearly ulterior motives.
Yeah. Future was definitely the better of the two. Only ones who disagree are whiny-ass "purists".
"HD" means: it runs on a modern system, will have a higher RESOLUTION (not necessarily better textures, understand this difference). and than it will probably be re-jigged into a 16:9 aspect ratio, so we're not staring at a square little box in the center of our giant displays.
to expect gameplay improvements, new camera controls, re-done textures, or new game content (multiplayer, etc) is to have completely overblown expectations.
He's saying the lack of change is disappointing, not because it was promised, but because the game HAS NOT AGED WELL. What else was he going to review it on?
Also, you don't have to fucking "Rebuild the engine from scratch" just to add in a free camera system or rearranging the controls. Thinking that shows no knowledge of game development what-so-ever.
Good review, I think 6.5 is a fair score and I will be picking it up, thanks Ian.
I really disagree about the "unfinished" part. That's what got to me a little. I'm not entirely sure how this is any more "unfinished" than any other XBLA/PSN title? Especially one below the Capcom money grab line of cost.
"Oh,it's a Xbox Exclusive"...dudes,the game has been released MANY YEARS AGO....there's a little chance it could be ported to BOTH consoles...
Good review! Love the game, and I'll have to pick it up soon.
More than anything it's the strange presentation, a sort of last hurrah of the 90s that appeal to me, even if this hurrah is decidedly Japanese flavored. For all of it's ropey and at time unresponsive controls, the lackluster moves (Tony Hawk it ain't), this was one of the games that epitomized my Dreamcast/Sega experience, and experience I miss deeply since they'd left hardware design. Let's face it, Sega then and Sega now are far removed.
If you went into this expecting anything but Jet Set Radio, shame on you. It's like almost nothing else out there, and that makes it a gem all it's own.
The real question that should be answered with this review is:
Is it a faithful re-release of the source material?
Yes it is.
Some things change, especially people's tastes. If Ian doesn't like the game right now and he's reviewing not the quality of the new HD build, but the quality of the game as it is, I fail to see the problem.
That said, I adore this game. It has flaws, to be sure, but I feel such a sense of pure joy when I play it. The challenge level is fantastic. I do hope JSRF gets an HD upgrade so I can finally play it.
Yes, JSRF is still technically the better game, but it doesn't make the first one any less special.
Videogames.
cause there are many classics like this game that would get super low scores today. Like Doom and Mario would not stand up well against stuff now.
This game is good, but not great.
6.5 is still a good score. And it really doesn't deserve more than that.
