Jesus freaks ready to go anti-Wii photo

Looks like Nintendo has a little problem on its hands: The Wii isn't for everyone. It seems an over zealous anti-porn group -- read that as morons with nothing better to do with their time than believe in ancient superstitions -- are set to go after Nintendo's innocent kiddie machine with the fact that it is a portal for porn. Alert the Internets!

CORONA, CA - The Nintendo Wii gaming console has a wiittle porn problem. That's right; this seemingly innocent family game console has a dirty little secret. It has the dubious ability to access pornography via the internet and most parents are not aware of this fact according to www.ThePornTalk.com

Like many new gaming technologies, the Wii's wireless internet capabilities make it a portal to porno. "Parents think the computer is the only way for their kids to get porn on the internet. Unfortunately, they are dead wrong," says Mike Foster, founder of ThePornTalk.com. "Gaming devices like the Wii and the PSP aren't just for fun games anymore. You're able to surf the net, chat with friends, email, and view porn because of its internet access. Kids know this but parents don't!"

This is exactly the kind of bullsh*t that scares Nintendo into keeping idiotic things like friend codes and the like. Please Nintendo, don't even acknowledge these wackos and learn to evolve, like the rest of the gaming industry.

Also if parents can't read a manual or a fucking box to realise that the Wii and psp have internet access, then they shouldn't be parents

hell yeah. the first thing I loaded up on my wiibrowser was pornotube!

Either way, parents are idiots now days. Is it too much to ask to take the initiative and see what you're kids are up to?

Yeah, and I can access porn by using... GASP... my imagination. Better put a v-chip in our heads at birth. We don't want imaginations to run wild with naughty thoughts.

Maybe... just maybe these people should focus on teaching people to be responsible, mindful parents rather than lambasting companies for advancing technology.

I'm not sure why this would be news to people. Where is porn? The internet. What accesses the internet? Computers. What else can access the internet? PSP and Wii. So...2+2 equals...

They had the exact same story on the local news a couple days ago. Naturally they interviewed some parents that were just shocked & appalled.

How about they crack open the manual, and check out the Parental Lock section. Portal to Porn problem solved.

"Kids know this but parents don't!"

Unfortunately that is true because parents don't pay enough attention to what their kids play. So basically, they should inform parents about it, show them the parental controls and be done with it. No reason to be "anti-Wii" - that's just retarded.

I don't think that the parental controls work for the browser. You'd need a proxy or filter for that external to the Wii.

Like, I dunno... 100% of every kid on earth that is aware of porn will look for it and look at it if they can find it. Deal with it.

Is there some sort of catch-all thing we can put out to paranoid parents that their kid has seen porn? And stop treating it like it's some newfound dirty little secret everytime something with a web browser built in is a porn viaduct for kids?

Hey, guess what? The public LIBRARY lets you access porn! Burn the books!

Kinko's let me photocopy my ass and my wang! Shut 'em down!

Ultimately I'm lost on what this group's efforts are going towards. Is it awareness? Then tell people it has a web browser built in and warn them about it. Don't act like in all cases, three clicks beyond the Wii Channels there's hot dildo on cat action, or something focused on waffle fetishes.

You know you want some hot waffle action, right?

"I don't think that the parental controls work for the browser. You'd need a proxy or filter for that external to the Wii."

Do the parental locks prevent kids from accessing / downloading new channels? If so, all a parent would have to do is delete the Internet browser on the Wii and turn the lock on, thus their kids can't re-download the browser / access porn on the Wii. But that hinges on what the parental blocks allow.

You know what the best parental locks are? Taking shit away from them.

Nothing restricts their ability to use things than not having them. Take away the controller. Problem solved. If they can't exhibit responsibility when using the game console, then they don't get to use it.

Although I don't necessarily feel as passionate about porn as www.porntalk.com, I actually read their write up about the Wii browser and they did provide information about the parental controls and what should be done so the Wii browser cannot be used. It was more informative about what to do if this sort of thing concerns you rather than bashing the system.

The Wii requires you to go into the Wii shop, and download the Wii web browser.

And before any of you say anything about hacking the DNS to use the WiiShop as a browser. Stop.

If the kid can hack DNS, he is intelligent enough to look at porn, and that mean he has access to a computer, thus.. why do you need the Wii?

Back to the main point here.

I got the Wii at launch, and after the first system update, new parental controls were avalible. Allowing parents to block games to run by ESRB rating. And Limit WiiShop accesses. And even disable the Wii WiFi.

I know that parents are not very tech savvy. I've known parents who do not under stand the concept of 3D space on the 2D computer monitor( you know. how you can have one window hidden behind another window? Took them a while to understand that.)
In fact, my parents thought that email functioned as snail mail. They though you had to buy postage and took the same amount of time as snail mail.
Oh, and they still type with two fingers. Index finger of left, and right hand.

Granted I'm of legal age and make gaming decisions myself. It up to the parents of little kids to do some, some, not a whole lot. Just some. Research.

If they ask the sales clerks at a games store (Giant stores that are not dedicated to game selling are not included) Most of them will know a crap load about the games and systems.

I work for a local game store, and we are required to know about the system functions and capabilities. Naturally I have explained the parental functions of the Wii to many parents, and how it works similar to a V-Chip or Cable box they have at home.

We have a Wii setup on demo, and I've showed several parents how to set a pin and set restrictions, step by step.

I, like many before me have posted, agree with the press release. But dislike the approach.
Unlike the "DS = child molesters"(Fox news. I think its here on Dtiod, if not, search for it on kotaku.) No one uses the picto chat. Unless you're drunk, hanging out with a room full of DS owner and you have really, nothing better to do.
That report was just bull. But proved Nintendo hardware can do more then advertised!

Oh well...
See... If they only do what I do for parents at all stores...

Wait till the group get wind of SNK's witch hunting game.

Why is it so many folk don't want Nintendo to advance.
And i feel it's about time that they started telling parents to take an interest in what their children do, i mean how bloody hard is it to actualy talk to you children?
If more parents actualy took an interest in things like the games, movies and music that their kids are into they might find that they'll have a much better relationship with their kids.
And i'm getting Bloody sick of parents/guardians going into game shops and asking for games like Grand Thief San Andrew and vice stories, the best ones are when they're asking for a console like the P2 and the P2P or the new Nintendo game boy (DS).
And the fact that an internet browser can access WEB SITES is shocking!!! :)
When i was growing up i never had the internet but i was never short of porn, porn is just one of those things that you can get from anywhere eg. friends, older brother, and my fave, the Pervert that drives up and down the streets searching for kids on PICTO CHAT!!!

where do you work? that sounds like the employees are actually helpful not only to gamers, but to the parents of budding gamers. thats definately the right approach. big chains that make thier livelihood of games sales should really offer education around the time of console launches.

there are so many little things that can be done, and when gamers take the initiative, it makes us look that much more responsible.

I live in Houston, and I'd kill for a video game store that required people to know their shit.

When I worked in retail in HS, I lied to myself about this belief when I worked for Babbages. After all, I'm selling video games, wearing a tie, working in the mall. I should be expected to know my shit, right?

I wonder if Nintendo could sue this organization. Slander? Misrepresentation? Defiling the image Nintendo works so hard to cultivate? Isn't this an attack against Nintendo's intellectual property? Yamauchi would never stand for this bullshit!

My mom still doesn't understand what the taskbar in Windows does, despite my numerous explanations. My sister enjoys that, since she can get away with minimizing MySpace if my mom walks in on her "homework." I think my mom only knows how to type because one of her early jobs was a secretary.

And I was always under the impression that PictoChat was good for use at conventions. (And for game journalists in boring press conferences.)

@Galagabug,

I'm sorry to report that I work for Ebgames.
But the requirement for gaming knowledge was forced upon by the store manager, who is an awesome guy. Not the chain. they don't care. They just want us to have good sales numbers.

We only have to pretend to be drones when the district manager visits >.>

Despite us being a chain store, we run it slightly differently then most...(We only have one camera watching us.. so we can get away with it >.<)

And the educational thing is something my friend(co-workers) do personally when the store is not over packed.

And no, there is no other independent game store near by me to switch to.

Has anybody really cared to read what they were saying. Nowhere did I see "zomg!!! don't buy teh wii. it has p0rn11!!!"

Instead it informs parents that don't realize it, that there is a web browser on the Wii and it can allow access to websites that parents deem inappropriate to their children. It is more of a heads up. Not all parents are gamers. Those of us who are have an edge, but the rest need a little help in game culture.

Besides, I still can't figure out why such an open culture is so intolerant of people who find things like porn inappropriate. I guess its the same thing that causes all intolerance, ignorance. Just look at the comment about confusing lust for adultery. The Bible is a pretty big book. It has more than 10 tidbits of dos and don'ts. According to Jesus, lust and adultery are the same (Just as hating and murdering are the same). It's more about the heart than the deeds.

Honestly, I hope everyone here realizes that Christianity doesn't mainly consist of paranoid, hate mongering idiots like the ones the media always shoves down our throats.

We're a large religion; of course there will be a portion of us who are complete nutjobs.

But most Christians, myself included, aren't so uptight and insane. I wish people on the internets knew that, because it seems like whenever I mention my religion, I'm assumed to be some crazy asshole.

Well deiga,
One would have to be a little crazy... I mean, virgin birth? Parting of the Red Sea? Raising from the dead?

The reason we play games is because this stuff never happens in reality, and it never did.
Religions' value is in its Mythos, not in its "fact". Most modern Christians don't get that.

Religion began as an ancient version of the Post-it,
A little reminder of what's important, and went crazy from there.

actually, the parting of the red sea is historically true.

although moses never waved a magic wand and the ocean grew into two big walls like they have you believe in the old Hanna Barbera films,as he was expediting the jews from a life of slavery and during this mass exodus, he had been studying nature and geography and all that business and learned a little bit about the seasons and their effect on natural occurrences, like the changing depth of the shallow red sea.

at the right time, moses led his followers (not sure of the exact number, but in the tens of thousands i believe) , obviously, the journey took more than a few minutes... the majority of his followers made it safely across before the season changed causing the tide to rise. however, the pursuing army was in the process of crossing still when the tide rose. the small change in depth was enough to drown them.

while christian "Mythos" may be exaggerated, a lot of it is based on historical truth, and may have something to do with the great justice and wealth so evident in nations built upon christian ideals.

please my friends, when you generalize religious stereotypes based on a SMALL percentage of a population, consider your audience. you wouldn't want to generalize races would you? that wouldn't be very "modern" or "cosmopolitan" would it now?
so why is it teh cooln3ss to diss christians? my guess is because it reminds so many of mommy and daddy.
but i wouldnt want to generalize.
