Jeri Ryan explains the Mortal Kombat clip photo

The eight-minute clip from a purported Mortal Kombat movie that surfaced earlier today has set the Internet ablaze with speculation as to what exactly the footage could be. A live-action teaser for the next Mortal Kombat videogame? A leaked clip from the "upcoming" stuck-in-development-hell Mortal Kombat film? It's actually neither of those things, according to actress Jeri Ryan, who played the part of Sonya Blade in the video and gave out some background details on her Twitter:

Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. [...] I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)

She didn't mention who the director might be, so let's all just hope that it isn't Paul W. S. Anderson. And as for letting Warner Bros. -- who, if you remember, obtained the Mortal Kombat license when they bought the remnants of Midway last year -- know that you want this film to get made, we're as clueless as Jeri Ryan is. Do you guys have any ideas?

@Magnalon, Don't forget Anderson directed the horror epic that is Event Horizon. WHy some of his stuff lacked since then, idk. But that film was awesome.

So... we shouldn't be excited for anything yet.
And we should just go back to watching it a few more times.

@Magnalon Exactly because he's stuck on his 'edge of the seat action!' of the Resident Evil films he's doing...NOW IN 3D!...Please. Anderson should have stopped at RE 1.

I really do hope they continue this project. I will miss the whole supernatural feel the MK series has but it would be interesting to see it as a modern day perspective, just like the Dark Knight.

I believe that the director was Isaac Florentine. He hasn't directed anything major, aside from a few episodes of the Power Rangers. His most recent film was "Undisputed III: Redemption" which was recently released on DVD. That's what I've heard, at least.

I was wrong. The director is Kevin Tancharoen. Guess what I heard was wrong. Oh well. At least we know who did it!

The trailer was totally badass... except for Baraka. Why does he have dreadlocks? Isn't he supposed to be bald??!! Oh well, it's a "reboot", meaning they can change the face of the characters.

Somehow I don't buy that. Why does this surface JUST NOW? Let's say nothing MK-related is shown at E3, this is still very suspect. Ravings of a fevered MK fan? Maybe. However I don't see this going away. The internet got Betty White on SNL for fuck sake, when most of the people weren't even a jizz stain on their mothers' chins. If they can get some old hag who isn't relevant anymore on a show that is barely relevant, surely they can make this happen.

Maybe sending nuts to WB studios, lawl.*

I was with Hale. Kinda was pushin' for a game but I'll take this no problem.

They absolutely NEED to retain that cast though. If the film doesn't totally match what that teaser showed there will be riots.

Jeri Ryan is so badass.

I would watch that film if it came out. Everybody's been making shitty unimaginative remakes lately so it would be nice to see an original one. An orginal remake? Shut up it made sense in my head.

Furthermore, I would still bone Jeri Ryan.

if this was made to impress WB and inspire them to greenlight this film, you should find @wbpictures on twitter and let them know how kickass this short looked. and for the record, everyone involved in this was awesome. make this happen.

Hopefully, if the real thing is made they can cut the dreds from Baraka. Baraka, in any version, should always be a bald devilish looking character. The face looks somewhat decent, but the hair doesn't work. It was okay aside from that I guess, except for maybe them killing off Johnny Cage so quickly.

Somebody pointed out in the forums that the flashed image of Sub Zero matches up with concept art from "ZBrush", dated March 2009

Now, does this mean that it's a tie-in to whatever game that art went on to become?
Or just that they needed an image for Sub Zero and the concept suited their needs?

Either way that was awesome. I'm liking this new fad of creating online shorts (The Modern Warfare shorts, this, the Halo ones)

Hopefully this can do what the Halo shorts did for Blomkampp and actually get something done for the director!

Trailer looks pretty damned good, more of a serious martial arts movie than a crappy fantasy film with too much CG and wires. I'd love to see it get made.

Neat! Maybe this will tie-in to a new MK game with the same tone? Last I heard Ed Boon said he wanted to 'overhaul' the franchise and definantly go 'M' rated.
Seems like a brutal world to restart MK, if so.....and I approve!

The casting of Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White is so good it almost should be made just for that. I don't know if WB will get this made but I hope they do.

I would LOVE to see this get pushed through as a movie! Retain the cast, the characters, the bios, etc.

As for Baraka having dreads....ummm, it's a RE-IMAGINING of the series people! If it makes sense for him to have dreads (or even if it doesn't) in this, who cares? Would you rather us go back to MK Annihilation? Really? And why is everyone making more of a big deal about Baraka's hair than Reptile having a "skin condition" and "inside-out eyeballs"? Oh, and if Scorpion is Jax and Sonya's attempt to win the MK tournament, should we really expect them to join it AGAINST him? Again, why whine about the hair? All in all, I can't wait to see how they handle the other characters and the overall storyline. Oh, and according to Wiki, Threshold is working on the movie, with or without the backing of WB.

So far we've seen:
Sonya
Jax
Scorpion
Johnny Cage
Baraka
Reptile
Sub-Zero
Shang Tsung

Remaining (Possible) Characters:

MK1:
Kano
Liu Kang
Raiden
Goro

MK2:
Kitana
Kung Lao
Mileena
Jade
Kintaro
Noob Saibot (LOL!)
Shao Kahn (maybe the overall boss with Shang Tsung as a front man?)
Smoke (I'd LOVE to see them work him in)

MK3:
Chameleon/Khameleon (Separate but interchangeable)
Cyrax
Ermac
Kabal
Motaro
Nightwolf (maybe a good filler character for the tournament?)
Rain
Sektor
Sheeva
Sindel
Stryker

...and on and on and on...

The make up for Baraka was pretty cheesy, but I do like the tone and feel of the movie. I'd watch it if they increased the production a little bit more.
