Jeff Minter pitches Video Game Hero photo

Space Giraffe developer and notorious industry whingebag Jeff Minter has been hard at work on a new game that he is hoping to pitch to Activision. Not really, but his idea for Video Game Hero could be a pretty good prospect nonetheless. Surely anything would be better than Space Giraffe

"Someone should do Video Game Hero: You pretend to play games with no real skill in using a rubbish plastic joystick and set to cheesy music," states the James Seth Lynch lookalike.

Brilliant idea, and oh-so witty satire, Mr. Minter. Let me also pitch a Hero game of my own that I've been working on with the boys in the lab. We call it Jeff Minter Hero: You pretend to develop games by throwing psychedelic colors and Internet memes at players and then throw a temper tantrum when nobody wants to buy your weird, stupid bullsh*t.

I think Activision would love that.

Thank you Jim for this article. I hope Minter can stay off the LSD long enough to read this. If you're reading this Minter, fuck you.

While I agree that Space Giraffe was a bad game, it's hard not to agree with his point here.

Space Invaders Extreme XBLA was good. But then again, he just did the backgrounds.

If that man is half the hippy he looks I'm a fan.

I'm all for bitching, doing nothing, jamming, and tripping all day.

In Half Life 2 I run around pretending to shoot people and save the day, this is perfectly acceptable. In Guitar Hero I stand still pretending to play music this is not acceptable. Therefore I am forced to conclude pretend motion is what makes games legitimate.

To be fair Space Giraffe was actually a great example of its genre. If you got past the insane visual design it was an excellent old school strategy shooter, and he has made some other decent games (albeit weird as sin).

Agreed on the point of Minter being a whining git though.

Don't fight it. I've tried. It doesn't work.

You may not understand Space Giraffe but that doesn't make it bad. This might be the single worst "news" I've seen on Destructoid :D

(also, have you heard about Gridrunner: Revolution and how it's also awesome? Ask metacritic or something)

Did anyone of you people even try the Gridrunner revolution Demo? It's far more easier on the eyes than what SPace Giraffe was. He heard the people's problems with SG and decided to do GR:Rev in a way that was easier to understand.

Also, if you download the SG PC Demo, you'll see that there's a Chill Out mode that features less intrusive visuals, making the game easier to play. SOME PEOPLE should take a closer look at the man's work before saying rude things about him.

Agreed, doesn't sound like Mr. Jim Sterling played much of the game...if any at all. The game is much deeper and has subtle layers of complexity that set it completely apart from being "just another Tempest clone"

Methinks Jim was once a frustrated game developer...shame to be that bitter and nasty.

Space Giraffe was excellent, Gridrunner Revolution was better and easier to get into and the newer game, kinda too easy to rag on the older one I think.

"SOME PEOPLE should take a closer look at the man's work before saying rude things about him."

And some people should lay off the LSD before they try to program a game.

Jeff Minter is making a living with his own company (that's been around for 27 years), and doing exactly what he wants. Kudos.

For a guy who likes throwing around bullshit opinions, you sure do get pissy when people who *actually* produce something decide to express one.

I agree with the few here defending Minter. Space Giraffe wasn't a bad game. I also think Jim must be a failed dev too to get his (large) panties in such a wad over this. Funny and sad all at once!

while i'm really not a fan of guitar hero, i can't see how this is news.

i want to bash minter for making a crap joke, but realistically it reflects worse on you (sterling) for having posted said crap joke here. it just comes off as kind of cruel and pointless.

I really enjoyed space giraffe after getting past the face melting visual design of it.

I gotta give credit to Minter for staying afloat in the games industry for this long too, he really is one of those devs you either seem to love or utterly hate.

In an industry full of self-important corporate tools, Jeff Minter still rules, IMO. He by himself (w/maybe 1-2 other people) can make just about any game, vs. everyone else and their teams, toolkits, toolsets, SDK's and all the pre-made engines & the like.

I enjoyed this post and I quite like Space Giraffe.

Idea for a game: Jim Sterling Hero! You get a big plastic keyboard with brightly colored buttons and type witty insults about game developers as their portraits scroll up the screen.

Well, he develops games with no real skill, so he would be the best person for the job.

Throw me on the Minter bandwagon (once again). Space Giraffe was crazy fun and really well made if you saw it for more than a chemical free psychedelic trip. Minter is a huge retro gamer and maybe a bit of a curmudgeon, hence his stance on the "Hero" games, but he is still really talented and I always look forward to what he's up to

Space Giraffe was a fecking excellent game - but the demo was rubbish, I can see how that put a lot of people off. That and the unwillingness of some to actually learn the mechanics and instead just whine that it was busy.

It still ranks as one of my all-time favourite 360 games.

And well done, Mr Sterling, you come across as a bit of a cnut.

Those who can - do
Those who can't - review
Those who can't review just make sarcastic comments.

Since when was a pisstaking comment on twitter news? Would that be the day anyone you thought of as being important wouldn't return your calls or emails because you were deemed irrelevant?
