Japanese TV Network frets over upcoming Wii video service

Japanese TV Network frets over upcoming Wii video service photo
     japan

The idea of the Wii dominating all my media needs is a little humorous to me at this point in time, but apparently Japanese TV Networks are seeing that as a possible threat to what they offer audiences. They were already feeling the crunch way back when as the Wii took people away from watching shows and busy waving their arms about willy-nilly, but with the Wii video service on the horizon, it may mean even more people forgetting to tune in.

A senior exec at Japan's biggest television station, Fuju Television, was quoted as saying "if the Wii was able to become the "centrepiece of the living room", it would be "the stuff of television producers' nightmares".

While I feel their pain, I wonder why so much more effort seems to be going into the Wii in Japan while American audiences sit on their cans ( or in the case of Wii Fit, get off them) waiting to see what will happen next. It's not like the Wii has a sales problem here -- why do we get left out?

Garison: As far as I know, the Wii does go above 480i - to 480p.

Isn't that why they make component cables?

Look at the clips on the Nintendo channel though. I don't want to wait 10 hours for a 30 minute you tube quality clip to buffer. Unless they're distributing this a different way.

I'd imagine if Nintendo where securing proper sponsors and companies they'd have to have the whole thing run alot tighter.

I think the internet is of more concern than a console. You can watch anything in the world and never watch a sponsor's commercial.

@jjwet35: Sorry, I meant 480p, I just sometimes get the two mixed up, I even have the component cables hooked up to my Wii, just goes to show how much I know haha.

Damnit, my cable is sucking right now, even with HD.

House only comes on once a week, and so does 24 once it starts back up again.

Other than that, nothing. Not even Chowder and Flapjack make me that happy, mostly because I can't DVR the episodes anymore.

And now Adult Swim is putting on that shit King Of The Hill? Damnit...

"why do we get left out?"

for the same reason Japanese 360 owners get left out every time new tv, movie, game DLC content comes out in the States...

The Farnsworth Parabox might be the best episode of Futurama that doesn't have either Zapp Brannigan or the ability to make me cry.

Japanese tv studios, like those from any other nation will always fear video games, stealing their auidience etc. Online uptake isn't as high in japan as many other nations but as this area grows, especially with consoles in mind, tv is always gonna suffer in the shadow of the internet.

Best way is not to bitch about the competition, but get in on the Wii action before other studios do. Not really rocket science.

I pretty much never watch the television, just BBC sometimes. I use the internet during what would be television time.

Man, if this YouTube quality Wii stuff is giving TV producers the willies, the Xbox must make them shit bricks and vomit at the same time!

Well, this is ironic. Everyone else is making full-blown entertainment systems with mass storage and contracts with major movie studios, while Nintendo is making a game system that can stream content just like any PC or TV box in the world.

Wii is the stuff of television producers' nightmares? Is that exec on drugs or something?

of course in Japan, high-speed internet is available everywhere, so they prolly could stream 480p easily :-)

Wheres my PS3 attachment that lets me watch and record TV shows with it? (playTV?) =( I think the whole Wii fanaticism is going to die down once Cable goes HD.

Japan has many Free internet access places in the more densely populated area.

Lets not forget that the Wii cannot be hardwired to stream videos. so what they're doing basically is having you wait while it buffers for a half hour to watch ten minutes of video.

Give us some storage devices Nintendo. Not lame TV crap.
And wheres our HD Wii? Where's our price drop? GAH! F U Miyamoto!

That senior exec's an idiot. His network can work out a deal w/Nintendo to sell their shows through the Wii. Then the service will be a benefit to them. Besides, there's always a portion of the populace oblivious or stubbornly ignorant who'll hold to the old ways.

Episodes a-la-carte is already established through the iPhone and other devices video service. Higher-ups in companies shouldn't blatantly lie, saying consumers don't want tv-a-la-carte or be idiots, thinking new distribution models hurt them, but seek out better ways of doing business and implement them.
