I love the system, and don't regret getting it at all, if only because I'm a big handheld gamer, and I would have gotten it eventually. That game library needs to grow though.
If you were talking to more consumers when you lived over there you would have found the same sentiment that was shared for the 3DS in America/Europe - That is, price + lackluster launch titles = No Buy.
I love showing it to people and they think that it is awesome, but when they hear the price they just cringe and say no thanks, haha. I will also be the first to say that it is an awesome console, but there is no way that it is worth $250.
I think 3D is okay for passive movie-watching, but my eyes dart around and focus differently when I'm playing a game.
Personally, the $99 DS Lite seems like it'll be much more up my alley. I've been licking my chops over Dragon Quest IX and I guess I'll catch up on Castlevania as well.
Its still selling pretty well. ITs been the #2 best seller in hardware almost every week(japan)
Honestly, I look at the 3DS tech and I just can't see anything there that would make it anywhere near that expensive.
On the other hand, looking at the NGP for comparison, EVERYTHING about it looks and sounds expensive. Whether it will be worth the price though...
what next genius? "American survey points to high price for slow 3DS sales" or "Euro survey points to high price for slow 3DS sales"?
I'd say it's a combination of both, the price is high yes but not insane, but if it's not coupled with kickass heavy weight software it's goona seem even more steep. Had the Ocarina Remake been a launch title things would be better, also 3rd parties didn't deliver any top notch stuff either (where's my RE Revelations Capcom?, oh yeah 2010... *sigh*).
I agree with you that Sony needs to price the low end model at $299 or they'll have trouble moving units. On the other hand, if Sony DOES price the NGP at $299 and Nintendo does NOT lower the 3DS price, then the 3DS is going to be branded as overpriced. The 3DS costs way too much for the technology involved. That being said, Nintendo may have screwed over the early adopters, thinking they'd buy one regardless, and planned all along for an early price cut. This will be interesting.
Agreed, this could be bad if 3rd parties don't release top notch software.
All things considered though, Nintendo could have coasted on the DS for a lot longer. I get wanting to put out a new system to generate new found sales or whatever, even if that idea seems really wrong when you think hard enough about it, but the DS was next to perfect and didn't really need much of an upgrade.
