Japanese suicide rate set spike, Capcom making Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins harder photo

Start drawing your warm baths now, guys. I can't believe I'm saying this, but come this August, Japanese gamers will be receiving an updated, more difficult version of Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins for the Sony PSP. Anyone who's had the fortune (or misfortune) to have played the game is probably wondering ... how on Earth could this frustrating, PSP-smasher of a game get any harder?

For one, how about limiting continues? Yeah, because you're not going to need those when one freakin' bird (who appears randomly from off-screen) knocks you into a chasm ... 17 times in a row. But let's say you're actually skilled and patient enough to make your way to the game's end. Congratulations, but too bad ... like previous games in the series, the "true" ending will only be available after completing the game twice. Sucker.

Other changes include charged magic attacks (a la Super Ghouls N' Ghosts), a double jump ability unlocked from the get-go, some new weapons, and the ability to play each stage out of order.

The Famitsu report that revealed the updated title, called Goku Makaimura Kai (which roughly translates to "this s**t's impossible"), also comes with instructions on how to tie your own noose. No word on a US release, but we all know Americans are lazy wimps who couldn't handle this kind of pressure.

But...but why would they do that? And who you allow themselves to go through that sort of torture?

This game used to make me actually hurl the controller at the wall. I think this is some Japanese ploy to torture the white man.

On the contrary, Japanese games are often toned down in difficulty. For example, one of the Devil May Cry's US "easy" mode was actually the Japanese normal difficulty.

They are all little bitches who want to sit in their internet cafe and read poorly drawn black and white soap operas and play RPG's which require nothing but time, rather than skill. Japanese people also murder dolphins. There, I said it.

Seems to be an attempt to cater to the "hardcore gamer".

They need better consultants.

I heard from Jeremy Parish at 1UP that the first version was actually a bad game and that people were interpreting "bad level design" as "old-school difficulty," unlike the rest of the series, which is good. I tend to agree with him, so I'll pass it up and buy the SNES installment on Wii one of these days so I can cry myself to sleep like the rest of you.

Maybe they feel the game's main selling point is its crazy hardness. So they were like: let's amp up the selling point. I just hope it doesn't lead to any murderous rampages.

The words "fuck you!" come up so many times when I play the first two games that I can't imagine what it will be like with this new one.

I loved Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins. I might buy this edition, if I can get it for cheap.

What confuses me is, in the original UGN'G you had play through the game at least twice to fight the first last boss, and then who knows how many times to fight real last boss.

That is to say, you had to collect 22 rings to fight the first boss, and most of those rings were unobtainable until you got the magic in the later levels to find those rings. So it was a given that you had to return to most of the games levels for the first 22 rings.

I never did find all 33, and I played that game for hours,. scouring every level.

So I'm not sure what they are talking about here. Playing through the game ONLY twice would be easier than the ring system that's in the game now.

I just made it to level two in the SNES version. I had no idea that game had bosses.

That's like digging a well in the Marinara Trench. There's a thin line between hard and frustrating, and they're about to take a flying leap across it.

I think you are not getting the idea Capcom, Ninja Gaiden Black has a Harder (OMFGBBQ you can die in the title screen!) mode but also an EASY mode ( in which you are constantly dissed for being sissy enough to play it, thanks Itagaki love you back). PLUS all the "impossible to get for human beings" stages that were in the hurricane pack and the weapons unlocked (those RULE big time!) in normal.

As a result Ninja gaiden black sold considerably better than the Ninja Gaiden Vainilla game. Because it cattered for Hardcore masochists and slightly more fragile human beings as well.

(An alternative EASY "Ninja in Pink!" version in which you wear a dress and kill Itagaki-lik sunglass wearing ninjas by provoking laughter attacks was considered but never released, probably out of mercy.)

THATS the formula: HARDER and EASIER (humilliation is optional though) Now go and do it Capcom!

I love it when games get incredibly harder for no good reason. Its a win win situation people
Options
A) you fail. "that's okay, the game is unfairly hard"
B) you win. "Oh wow, I somehow just managed to revalidate my skills as a gamer by beating this ridiculous game."

Never underestimate the sense of accomplishment one gets from beating hard games, be they unfair or unbalanced. Mmm... delicious ninja gaiden sigma, how I want you.

I want a new Ninja Gaiden game. I played the shit out of the Xbox version, and it wasn't really that hard except for the beginning and the end. I think it's time to stop re-releasing the same game.

Thestripe: Ninja Gaiden 2 is coming for the xbox 360, thats all we know, when or how is hard to tell, Team Ninja is very good at keeping secrets. But Itagaki did "announced it" in EGM.
