Japanese sales in March: PSP outsells all other consoles photo

It's sort of funny how a Reuters article points out the Captain Obvious headline rather than the real news here.

Sony's PlayStation Portable dominated Japanese sales in March. Reuters aims for the mainstream with their story on the difference between Wii and PS3 sales (265,542 vs 81,579 units), leaving PSP's massive lead of 415,415 units over Nintendo DS (255,124 in March) for the geeky types.

According to Media Create numbers, the last week of March saw a big boost for the PSP, and it seems that the release of Monster Hunter Freedom 2G had something to do with it. It was the top selling title in March. In that last week, the PSP sold 129,986 units, more than doubling the DS's 59,986 units.

The Xbox 360 continues to hang in at last place, with 13,127 units sold in the month of March, and 1,547 units sold in the last week.

Japanese gamers really like their Monster Hunter games, but the redesign and new colors are also helping to propel sales.

I know the God of War PSP will be the reason I finally buy one so it wouldn't surprise me at all if the redesign had a lot to do with the boosted sales.

Monster Hunter was the cause of the last PSP surge in Japan as well.

Do they not like any other PSP games, or what?

Monster Hunter was one of those series where I could never understand how it got so big in Japan. It's not really too surprising to see the PSP selling so well though with this, Crisis Core and new colors now available.

Wait till Monster Hunter 3 comes out for the Wii over there. They're gonna scoop that shit right up.

Im playing more PSP now because of recent game releases for it. Further proof of the fact on how software drives hardware sales.

Thing is, I think they've (as a population) already bought DS and Wii already.. So, that would make PSP the only console left by default to buy. We know Xbox 360 is something they've already picked up for a few titles like Ace Combat 6 and/or Id@lmaster, but didn't gain much more steam afterwards. I just feel Japanese are addicted to something 'new' and when new bundles of PSP's come they don't have one, so they gotta get it. IMHO

That's a miracle.

* correction, I didn't mean to infer that everyone already owned a 360 over there, I meant it in a way that anyone there that already wanted a 360 got one, and everyone else probably doesn't care about 360 so, in theory, the only console left they don't already own by default is PSP.

Monster Hunter = massive sales in Japan. I'm not surprised at all.

Well I'm pretty sure that anyone who wants DS owns one at this point, not to mention that the DS releases have been quite lackluster as of late.

The PSP on the other hand is finally starting to get some decent titles.

I think a lot of people who are buying 360s (in Japan) are army brats and other Americans living in Japan. Also, of course, a few "outside-the-box thinking" Japanese.

Well doesn't everyone already own a DS there?

Most of em will probably have a DS and a PSP at some point.

No surprise.

BTW looking at the IGN release dates... DS still wins in software. My DS will probably get more usage in the coming months than my PSP.

They're still selling DS, so people must be buying a second. The Japanese market is obviously aiming to colour coordinate their portable consoles and their clothing.
