Japanese retailers allegedly cutting PS Vita prices photo

In the wake of last week's sharply falling sales, Japanese retailers are apparently slicing the PlayStation Vita's price in order to stimulate a few more buys.

An image has circulated of one particular retailer offering the 3G-enabled Vita for ¥24,999, a drop of nearly 17% from ¥29,980.

It's believed that the 3G model is particularly problematic for Sony. 85% of the Wi-Fi Vitas were reportedly sold at launch, compared to 56% for the 3G. Oddly, it seems people don't want to pay more for outdated technology that has very limited use on a dedicated gaming handheld.

While I hope that Vita sales pick up (because I'd like to see the machine supported by publishers), I can't help but think that tossing two SKUs onto the market at launch was a silly, alienating idea. With such a new product, I don't think Sony should have potentially confused customers so early ... but then I remember it's Sony, the company that doesn't even know itself what the Vita can do. Pretty par for the course.

I don't understand people these days. We should obviously be paying more for outdated and proprietary technology.
It would make the world better.

If I didn't get a Vita for Christmas, I wouldn't buy it, until it was much cheaper, but my girlfriend had to go buy me one. [Sigh!]

Funny how the 2 tiered line model works for Apple with their iPads and doesn't for Sony, I mean who knows, maybe not that many people are chumps and are willing to pay more for 20mb of data usage?

I only hope that some of these reported worries about the Vita's sales won't scare off any developers. But also it hopefully might make Sony slash the price a little or add more incentive to getting a Vita.

I dunno, I'm just going to put off getting one until I know there's plenty of content, I don't want another 3DS situation where I had to wait a bit for the good games to come.

Before people found out about there was no internal memory, everyone thought it was a great idea for that price, but now it's differrent. This should've been done a while ago since the hit they take would be recovered from memory cards (plus more sales too). I hope they drop the price here in NA too because the (cheaper) competition will take them down, no matter how amazing the Vita is. $200-$230 would seem fair.

I say that's a fake price tag. Some of those characters are from the Hylian alphabet & we all know that's Nintendo's thing. They have also put a full stop (period) where a comma should be. Yep, totally fake.

Now I don't feel ripped off paying full price for my 3g Vita. Ignorance is bliss.

This is doubly strange seeing as how everyone assumed the 3DS would fail and we've heard of plenty of people pledging support for Sony.

The retailers had overpriced the units, thats not the fault of sony.

Playasia still wants over 400 bucks for a PS Vita...

I think the current price point is a bit high right now with the almost mandatory inclusion of a 16gb memory card, 32gb would normally be the amount of storage such a device would use but with the prices of those cards and the fact that the 32gb doesn't even get a release in most countries at launch 16gb would do. with 50€ for a 16gb card vs 16€ for a class 10 micro sd of the same size the price is just insane

@ Smo5000
Yeah (because they speculated that the system would sell out), but even the japanese retailers did go down to 24999 Ye and thats still more expensive than a US WiFi Model. I don't think that Sony recommended the even higher price before that one.

Also, my theory is that the 3G is a smoke and mirror routine so when the Vita-2000 comes out with 4G, everyone will want it.

24999 yen is $326 thats $26 over the 3G model, but we have to take exchange rates and sales tax into account. It also depends on if the store is displaying the price + tax or with no tax at all.

I do see your point with the original 29980 yen for the 3G model. I just dont know what $300 converts to after exchange rates.

the 3G model is totally baffling to me. why would anyone want to pay more for a console so that they can be force-married to a cellphone company who will then CONTINUE TO CHARGE THEM for using it?

some people, i guess.

(granted, i would not want to play online multiplayer games on a handheld, so i might be extra out of the loop.)

Why cant Sony work out a deal with the 3G providers to sell the Vita for $99 with a 1yr contract? Some companies do that for wifi Hotspots and 3G usb sticks, why not for Vita? While LTE or even 4G would certainly be faster the coverage area is significantly less. Guess they are saving that as the big upgrade to the next Vita model.

Debunked.
This is a single limited time sale from a single retailer.
The guys in the field from 8-4 Ltd. have not seen ANY other discounts at any other retailers.

My guess is that phones and hotspots are overpriced without such deals, and worthless to the companies who make them without a phone plan of some kind.
The vita, however, is already costing sony money with a loss on each system and doesn't need the 3g to work or run.

3DS = Virtual Boy! This thing is doomed. They already had to cut the price on it! I don't like Pilotwings; therefore, there were no good launch games for it. What a terrible system.

Kotaku: DOOOOMED!
Jim: DOOOOMED! But I'll pretend I wasn't such a Negative Nancy about it a few months later when sales pick up.

@Ahoyhoy True! A price cut is not a stamp of failure if it actually stimulates enough sales. Nintendo cut the price on the 3DS and now are seeing benefits. IF Sony ends up cutting the price more people will buy, Sony will eventually recover, and the internet will have even more to complain about. Everybody Wins!

I thought the 3DS is doomed stuff was comical, but I believe there may actually be a legitimate concern with the Vita.

If the Vita's lukewarm reception sales-wise in it's second week of availability are a sign of things to come for the Vita, then Sony may be in trouble here.

I mean, Sony's last bastion is Japan. Sony products that flounder about internationally always do well for Sony in Japan.

If Japan's half-hearted response to the launch of the Vita proves to be the trend, I'd expect international launch sales to be well under projected numbers.

@Max- I think that with the apple comparison, it has more to do with the fact that the ipad (and other ios devices) are media consumption devices, so people feel justified (though I wouldn't) paying for information transmittal to the device, with the PSvita you have the perception of a game console that you are then just charged an extra fee when you could play the games offline and multiplayer when you are in a wifi spot - but it isn't seen as your email machine or your gps or google maps locator....

I hate to be that guy but the more the vita fails the more I win

I sure as hell dont wana pay the same amount i did for my ps3 for a handheld that I dont even want because mobile gaming is just a fancy way of asking to be mugged in my neck of the woods.

Sony releasing the Vita is like cutting their consumers in half. Now we gotta support two platforms at once that both supply the same type of core titles. Hopefully the best vita titles will be available on PS3 but thats probably not gonna happen.

SO YEA a early death for the Vita sounds like the best possible outcome for PS3 owners

Garbage? It looks like a great piece of tech that I would love to have and NEVER bring outside

Its price tag however effectively turns it into a sink hole which will suck up plenty of weird and Japanese tittles that my PS3 would love to swallow

Yeah, I just don't get the need for 3G when you can find Wi-fi signals in so many places now -specially with the strange (by my standard, which sits on a porch and waves a shotgun at the kids) surge in personal hotspot sales..

Give me a the Wi-Fi model and leave me to spend that extra $50 on one of your damn proprietary (and required) memory cards, then leave me alone.

Also wanted to add that I wish retailers had the balls to lower prices on crap like this in the US without some sort of okay from the console maker. Its a SUGGESTED retail price for a reason.. The definition of which get pretty heavily forgotten as you move further westward it seems.
