Japanese Brawl-blocked by dust and tobacco photo

Imagine waiting in line and fighting the crowds for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, only to find that the game suffers from booting and playback problems. Don't blame Nintendo; blame your dirty, unhealthy lifestyle.

Nintendo of Japan was forced to issue a statement, as many Smash Bros. Brawl owners complained of disc read errors and choppy video playback. It seems that Nintendo thinks the problem stems from dust and tobacco building up on Wii laser units. And if you're wondering why we haven't heard any prior complaints, know that Brawl is the first dual-layer DVD game release for the system, and Nintendo says these discs may be more sensitive to a dirty lens.

Believe it or not, Nintendo has offered to clean any dirty Wii systems sent to them, as they say that the procedure can't be performed by Wii owners. Japanese users need to send in their warranty card, Wii, and their copy of Smash to recieve the free service; Nintendo will cover shipping.

So, chain smokers and filthy people, be glad that you have a bit of heads up before the US release of this game.

I always suspected that the delay was to ensure that we of the superior breeding don't get any flak like this.

Wasn't there a pic in the Wii manual not to smoke near it?

I don't smoke in the house so it's all good.

Sucks to have that happen. As a former smoker I used to hate how it made my apartment smell and look when I smoked indoors. Not very attractive to the ladies either unless you are trying to attract a chain smoking harley chick. After I realized that, I would go outside to smoke. And then I realized how dirty electronics can get in a smokers house and I'm glad I stopped doing that when I did.

Silly Japanese, the Wii is not a spit tobacco bucket. I know, I know, I made the same mistake too, but damn it all you Japanese are going to have to stifle your love of Copenhagen for just a hot minute thar champs. Mmmmkay?

So the 360 gets sent to the manufacturer for the RRoD and now the Wii gets sent in for lens cleanings. Does this mean here soon we will send off PS3s for a library of games?

Koreans smoke a hell of a lot more than the Japanese do, I'd think.

I'm raising my eyebrow--it's a new type of disc, which may be "more sensitive." Man, if the Wii goes to shit, this generation of consoles is the generation of fail.

Dual layer discs have always been more sensitive. Just try to burn a DVD+R DL.

sounds a bit shady to me. I like how Nintendo can apparently get away with blaming the customer though. good shit nintendo.

They can get away with it because not only do they replace it for free they said they would pay shipping. Most nintendo products are very reliable anyway.

I'm with F Whipple. I'm just glad I don't smoke, but if there are other errors with my disc... I will slit some throats.

What are the chances they needed a couple of extra weeks to finish the game properly? Knowing Japan would go apeshit at another delay they cleverly release a batch of blank discs then blame it on the unhealthy lifestyle of it's users when the "game" fails to boot. By the time people send their Wiis in for cleaning the real game will be done and Nintendo will switch the discs without anybody suspecting a thing.

Someone should get a Wii as dirty as that infamous PS3 and then send it to Nintendo for cleaning. I’d laugh.

Wsan't there a rumour about a bunch of bad discs being sent out and Nintendo let it happen because they were behind schedule? And now they're telling people that "some copies aren't working because they ARE UNCLEAN!"

But hey, send the console AND THE GAME BACK and you will get a Wii back that can PLAY THE GAME! Someone should put a small but identifiable mark on their copy of the disc to make sure they're getting back the original they sent away, so we can end this mystery, Scooby Do style.

I think it's Old Man Kutaragi, who wants to get revenge on Nintendo for making kids not play Sony's Vidya, and he will be unmasked as the ghost of Yamauchi that has been haunting the disc pressing plant.

Don't slot-loading drives have a foam protector to keep dust from getting inside the unit? In my experience, slot-load drives never get dirty inside.

These people should try using a lens cleaner disc. I had to do that to my tray-loading CD player after, oh, eight years of use. If that doesn't work, I'd suspect that the laser just isn't very good. Maybe the Wii uses a plastic lens instead of a glass one, like all optical drives are supposed to have.
