Japan's top ten games of 2009 photo

As videogame news becomes thinner on the ground, you can expect the slack to be made up for with lots and lots of reflective top ten lists. Here's one from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. It's the top ten Japanese sellers of 2009, and as you might expect, it's nearly all Wii and DS stuff.

Here are the top ten games of Japan after 51 weeks electronic consumerism:

  1. [NDS] Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Square Enix) - 4.046.945
  2. [NDS] Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver (Pokemon Co.) - 3.233.000
  3. [NDS] Friend Collection (Nintendo) - 2.065.000
  4. [WII] New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo) - 1.972.000
  5. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix) - 1.516.532
  6. [WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) - 1.406.753
  7. [WII] Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) - 1.165.000
  8. [WII] Monster Hunter 3 (Capcom) - 939.707
  9. [PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP the Best) (Capcom) - 894.469
  10. [NDS] Inazuma Eleven 2: Threat of the Invaders - Fire / Blizzard (Level 5) - 817.000

As you can see, the only things breaking up the Wii/DS stranglehold are very predictable entries. Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3 and Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite on the PSP. Unsurprisingly, the Xbox 360 doesn't get so much as a sniff. Anyway, that's a top ten list of games for you to look at for a bit.

It's impressive to see that FF13 has only been out for a couple of days and it was the fifth most sold game in the year.

I'm with Daxelman. WTF is Friend Collection?

Considering the title and the source, it's probably some kidnap/rape simulator...

Friend Collection: A Virtual World For your Miis. Sounds lame, how does a game like that sell like hot cakes in japan?

xenophobic has no place in Japan. So STFU about the xenophobia angle.

Japanese just doesn't care what they play. Obviously they also rely on a few brand names rather than actual game play. In any case, why do we care about Japanese gaming now days? It was cool when Japanese games were hot cakes right out the oven in 80s and 90s. However, the western games moved on. Surpass the Japanese made games. Even Samsung passed Sony. So what's the surprise? Are there so many "anything out of Japan is better than anything out of West" crowds on Destructoid and they don't see the truth?

I'd chalk up the wii/ds dominance to all the casual games on there myself, not Xenophobia. Gaming is so ubiquitous that it just makes sense that they would dominate, and therefore that the Wii would dominate. The only non-casuals are a few Japan faves such as Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, FF, and Pokemon.

@whateverthismeanstoyou: Wait, you're talking about brand name recognition when Modern Warfare 2 almost dropped the "Call of Duty" tag, but decided not to since their target audience wouldn't have recognized it otherwise?

Right.

Americans describing the japanese as xenophobic? The irony...

Oh and it's not like most American games are translated there anyways. And let's also wait for the american 'top 10' list. It'll be something like :

1- Modern Warfare 2 Xbox. 2- Modern Warfare 2 Ps3 3- Modern Warfare 2 PC. 4- Madden 20xx Xbox.

Nothing to boast about really.

People complain about Japanese developers not evolving, but based on the numbers, it seems that Japanese consumers aren't exactly looking for change. The most unabashedly traditional games are the ones with the highest sales.

As Americans are much more into the westerner stuff especially 1st person shooters so do Japanese are much more into their own especially RPGS.
Japan isn't about RPgs only.Yes it's their main genre...but remember how many different type of games we've seen over the ages.So many new and great titles.Resident Evil,Silent hill,Devil May Cry,Metal Gear Solid,Zelda,Mario,FF's and the list goes on...you may say that Japan isn't evolving in the gaming industry right now which is inacurate...there are still some titles that seem to be evolving the genre like Bayonetta as an example.
I admire Japanese games because i find different genres over the years.Western gaming is more about shooters and that is a fact there's no variety

@SnatchTease - I have lived in Japan. You're right, you are an outsider if you, ya know, come from outside. That said, Japan is a country which evolved from an isolated feudal system to a fully modern nation in a shorter time than any other country simply based on it's willingness to use what comes from other nations. So the xenophobia angle doesn't hold up.

What's the first thing you see when you come out of Shibuya? A Starbucks.
What's the most ubiquitous corner store in Japan? A 7/11.
What's the most popular food in Japan? Curry.
What's the most popular sport in Japan? Baseball.

Imported from: U.S.; U.S.; India; U.S.

The Japanese DO have an attitude that they are the best, but they are also a culture which has no problem with embracing anything which truly is better.

Lets look at the non-Japanese stuff on the worldwide stats:
Call of Duty:MW2.
Halo: ODST.
Madden.

Now Madden is a write-off. The Japanese simply don't care about football, and why should they? A bunch of American teams has nothing to do with them.

As for ODST. The game is fun, yes, but it isn't groundbreaking, and did so well here based on it's name as well as the rabid 'Firefly' fanbase that ate it up.

Finally, Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2. This has won a few GOTYs, but it's also received alot of criticisms. The game itself is a gigantic hype machine, and has sold as well as it did on that point alone. Also, the Japanese don't tend to buy shooters.
The fact that a Western-oriented game does well in the West and less well in the East isn't a measure of xenophobia, and the fact that many think it is speaks to the cultural arrogance that we ourselves have.
Klempky's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/28/2009 12:59

@Dax: As far as I remember it, they actually did a little poll among people on their mailing list or some such to see if it would make an impact, and came to that result. And also, you have to take into consideration that most of the people that refer to it was MW2 are the people on gaming blogs (ie: here). Most of the people I know who went to the midnight release but don't keep up with gaming news call it Call of Duty.

That being said, Japan IS incredibly xenophobic. It always has been in the past, and it just hasn't really jumped that hurdle entirely. As for those denying it, refer to SnatchTease's post for truth, and a few posts about two or three weeks(?) back on Dtoid talking about a Squenix guy getting onto other Japanese developers for looking down their nose on western games.

But anyway, that's not important. What's important is when DQIX is coming to America.

@Klempky: I don't know man, I know a lot of people who refer to it as "That Game With Guns". Seriously.

Also, I don't think Japan is Xenophobic in that sorta way. I think their Xenophobic in their way of what's entertaining to them. Why do you think we're not getting the Rebuild of Eva movies in actual movie theaters while Japan has Red Carpet releases for the stuff?

Evangelion is vastly more interesting to the Japanese than it is to the West, just like CoD is vastly more interesting to us than the Japanese.

They have Dragon Quest, we have Halo.

It doesnīt surprise me FFXIII comes in the list but itīs surprises me where it is (for a FF thatīs a low rank, despite the few time it came out), but HG/SS itīs a hit on itīs own...

DD is still there? Japanese audience knows how to make something live.

Xenophobic Americans (you'd have to be if you're so ignorant that you said the Japanese have shitty taste in games) calling the Japanese xenophobic? Irony is a beautiful thing. I guess people forgot about the top 50 games of the decade list from a while back that was comprised mostly of Japanese games (and for good reason too).

No one will deny that Japan is a culturally isolated nation in certain ways, but to go as far as to say they hate all Western culture when the iPod is one of the most popular products and Baseball is their favorite sport is pretty extreme.

There is a big difference between xenophobia and not liking games with realistic characters, American-style sci-fi elements, and/or a lot of gun violence.

Japan doesn't fear western-made games, they just don't like them. Hell, for years, Americans didn't like them either. Was that because of xenophobia too?

"Unsurprisingly, the Xbox 360 doesn't get so much as a sniff."

Not sure if this says much, but from what Sillconera gathered, the top game with DLC in Japan for the 360 was "Idolm@ster: Live For You!".
http://www.siliconera.com/2009/12/23/guess-which-xbox-360-game-topped-japans-dlc-ranking-chart/

It was an interesting year for the 360 in Japan, sightly more optimistic in some ways, but only time will tell along with the games. I love IM@S, though!
Also, see how easy that was to list a dang link to a SOURCE? :3

well you do have to take into account how long games have been out... FFXIII has only been out for like a week, while Dragon quest and pokemon have been out for months... hell i'm sure one of the reasons FFXIII's numbers are not higher is because it was probably selling-out all over the place and there are still gamers waiting to get their hands on it...
