Japan's 50 top selling Xbox 360 games listed photo

The good folks at NeoGAF bring us a scan from Famitsu Xbox360 detailing the top 50 best selling Xbox 360 titles in Japan. These numbers come from Enterbrain tracking. Without further ado:

01. Blue Dragon - 203,740
02. Dead or Alive 4 - 108,618
03. Ace Combat 6 - 83,045
04. Halo 3 - 82,987
05. Ridge Racer 6 - 73,501
06. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 72,274
07. Trusty Bell - 70,244
08. Gears of War - 68,270
09. Dead Rising - 68,078
10. Lost Planet - 61,555

That's right: the best selling title moved less than a quarter of a million units. I guess that 203,000 units for a Japanese Xbox 360 game is pretty good, though.

Some of the rankings come as a bit of a surprise. Lost Odyssey came in at No. 12 with just over 60,000 units sold; Ridge Racer 6 sold more copies. I would've also guessed that Namco Bandai's Idolm@aster would have sold better, but only 48,695 copies were sold.

Hey, Japan. If Culdcept Saga only sold 27,000 units, I'd think that would be pretty good motivation to hurry up and release it in the US. We'll buy it!

These top 50 Xbox 360 come to a lifetime total of 1,818,924. That may sound like a big number, but November's US sales of Super Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero III beat this lifetime total easily.

What the hell is Trusty Bell and where can I place my order for it immediately?

Yeah, give up on Japan. Focus on the US and Europe. Reward those that actually like your system.

Riiiiddddge Racer 6. I only bought that when I first got my 360 here in the US because it was 20 bucks and I only had 2 other games. I feel so dirty.

I'm inclined to agree. If they're just going to buy utter shite like Blue Dragon and ignore anything tainted by wide-eyed foreign devils, fuck them. Microsoft keeps saying it wants to focus on Europe -- DO EET! We'll actually, y'know, appreciate it.

@Butmac:

Trusty Bell was renamed Eternal Sonata in the US.

I'm torn because if it weren't for those Japanese exclusives I would be less inclined to have bought a 360. I seriously bought one for Mistwalkers games, Eternal Sonata and Katamari (I actually thought Blue Dragon was decent).

I don't want them to completely give up on Japan despite their poor sales...

I think I'm in the minority.

I want the convenience store simulator in the US!

RELEASE IT NOW!

I actually know someone that is a Japanese Xbox 360 player. He mostly plays imports and Gears. They really do consider our console a superlative system to the other two there. He only has it because he has the cash to blow on it.

Its because asians have small hands ^_^ can't be getting used the westerners big pads. I remember when my mate who was Japanese played the original Xbox pad round mine, he wasnt pleased! Then he schooled me at Pro EVO :'(

The problem with them giving up is that japan is a major territory, and they want to have their feet wherever they can, japan is no exception.

Dammit Japan, just because it's not a game about raising a pet dog that dances to Jpop tunes doesn't mean it's not worth your money.

It's the high failure rate for the 360, folks. The Japanese do not take failure lightly.

Jims right, Blue dragon was shit. This just comes acrossed as ye another half-assed attempt by M$ to buy their way into a market that they are just not welcomed. Maybe if they started putting out some great games that wernt just another FPS mindset, they may do better then they have been.

Irikyou is right as well. Maybe right on the head of it all, with the failure rate that historicly the 360 has seen. I wonder now how many ppl they paid off at gamspot and the likes for the reviews they have gotten on a lot of the 360s games. Oblivion was good, Gears of war was good. The rest of that first year, they had nothing...at..all.

I don't see how the lack of sales of the 360 in Japan is an indicator that it's a bad system. I don't need other people to tell me what's a bad system and what isn't. If anything, I think the Japanese would rather we make our own decisions on what systems to buy rather than copy their every move.

I hear a different excuse every time why a MS console can't sell well in Japan, including people from Japan....

It's too big
It's too small
It's black
It's not black
It's not shiny
The controller is too big
It's not "new" looking
It doesn't have any good games
It doesn't have the games I want
It has games I want but they aren't good
It's Microsoft
It's an American product
The D-pad sucks
It doesn't have enough used panty dispenser sims

I think they simply want to stick to Sony and Nintendo consoles and will ignore everything else no matter what games are on it.
Monte's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/28/2007 19:58

@brainderailment
The other problem MS would suffer if they chose to ignore japan is getting their developers on their side, and unlike western games in japan, japanese games are indeed popular in the west. right now, no japanese developer would be willing to go 360 exclusive, but they are still willing to consider multiplatforming; hence those like capcom mutiplatforming their once exclusive PS3 titles... however, if the PS3 continues to rise in popularity in the west and the 360 decreases popularity in the east, more developers may choose to stick to PS3 exclusive... afterall, the PS3 version may one day sell fine on it's own in the west and they won't need the western 360 sales

If MS gives up on japan, japanese developers may give up on them completly... and that's not something MS wants

@IceMax
One thing you should keep in mind is how well games normally do... i mean when Dale says 200k is small, i'm sure he's saying that from the japanese point of view, comparing the 200k to how much games normally sell over there. not to mention, though the japanese population is smaller, i wouldn't be surprised if they had a better ratio of gamers-to-nongamers than the west, which helps even things out a bit more... it's one of the reasons why Japan is one of the biggest markets for games

If a 360 console is "too big" for a modern-day Japanese apartment then those guys have serious issues. I mean, where do they put the freaking TV if the console is "too big?"

Aw cut them some slack guys, they're just frightened of anything that's not made by Nintendo. Go unnecessary nationalism!

*COUGHCOUGH* You know you could recoup all those losses on IdolM@ster if you brought it over here *WINKWINK*.
Hell, anything you bring over here you can recoup the losses on.

And those Dead Rising sales are the reason we might not see a sequel.

If it doesn't have a sexy bishie or waggle then they don't want it, they get exclusives faster, they get one of a kind consoles, what they do? They ignore it in favor of the latest minigame collection on the Wii.

Fuck the japanese market, its a money pit, if they focused on Europe they would get more sales, the PAL market has been shit one for years by every console market, if MS did things differently I'm they would get plenty of new fans and the old ones would be quite happy.
