There's no denying that this week was a kickass week for console game releases in Japan. It should come as no surprise that Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl led the pack, managing to move 500,000 copies in one day.
Cubed3 was nice enough to pass off this information from a Japanese blog packed with first-day sales numbers. It turns out that Brawl is the fastest selling Wii title so far, managing to sell through 80% of its initial stock. A figure of 80% doesn't quite equal the sell out we expected, but I'm sure many retail outlets were completely tapped yesterday.
The next best-selling title was Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 version managed a 60% sell-through of initial stock, moving 140,000 copies, while the Xbox 360 moved 30,000. Almost as popular as DMC4 was the new PS2 title Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi, with 105,000 fellow anime/manga fans lining up to grab the game.
I would have loved to had the chance to pick up a copy of Disgaea 3 for the PS3. Too bad it's in Japanese. The new Nippon Ichi SRPG sold 40,000 copies, half of which were limited edition sets.
Do you think the US can beat that 500,000 number? I think DMC4 will do better than that!
[Thanks, JR]

Fuck heads! :P
DMC4 sold 170k total in one day there too so who knows...
Maybe SSB isn't as big of a game in Japan as it is in the US.
What, did everyone buy 2 copies each?
Also, Suzumiya Haruhi ftw.

I will be picking upi DMC4 on the PS3, SSBB for my wii is iffy as I never liked any of ther other SSB titles.
My little sister is obsessed with military weaponry right now, especially battle tanks. I can't wait to see how she handles this.
I expect the sales to go much higher through the week as Nintendo finishes shipping out the game to those crazy Japanese.
Yes, the soundtrack is amazing; Sub-Space Emissary looks to be utterly awesome; and if Masterpieces lead to Earthbound being on Virtual Console and maybe even the entire Mother series coming to the US, hell yeah power to SSBB. But it doesn't change how disappointed I am and will continue to be over the roster.
It's probably the first and last time I'll ever say "HELL YES." to that question.
But anyways, these are some pretty amazing numbers. Let's just pray that it does that well over here in the US. The Wii needs a good kick-start like this in order to keep its lead. :3
I'll light a candle for you, or something.
