Japan moves half a million copies of Smash Bros. Brawl in one day photo

There's no denying that this week was a kickass week for console game releases in Japan. It should come as no surprise that Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl led the pack, managing to move 500,000 copies in one day.

Cubed3 was nice enough to pass off this information from a Japanese blog packed with first-day sales numbers. It turns out that Brawl is the fastest selling Wii title so far, managing to sell through 80% of its initial stock. A figure of 80% doesn't quite equal the sell out we expected, but I'm sure many retail outlets were completely tapped yesterday.

The next best-selling title was Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 version managed a 60% sell-through of initial stock, moving 140,000 copies, while the Xbox 360 moved 30,000. Almost as popular as DMC4 was the new PS2 title Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi, with 105,000 fellow anime/manga fans lining up to grab the game.

I would have loved to had the chance to pick up a copy of Disgaea 3 for the PS3. Too bad it's in Japanese. The new Nippon Ichi SRPG sold 40,000 copies, half of which were limited edition sets.

Do you think the US can beat that 500,000 number? I think DMC4 will do better than that!

[Thanks, JR]

Half a million copies sold, and half a million people BLAZING through it, then posting videos and pictures instead of playing it more.

Fuck heads! :P

It's no Halo 3 (thank fucking christ), but that's still impressive.

I foresee SSBB selling four billion copies in one hour in American.

I honestly expected it would have sold through at least 90% of its initial stock on day 1. Still, 500,000 is damn impressive!

That a Haruhi-related title sold that many copies is just terrible.

Maybe its just me but 500k seems like a pretty pathetic number for the most anticipated game to be released on the Wii. That means that only 10% of Wii owners in Japan went out and bought Brawl on day 1. Halo 3 sold almost 3 million copies on its first day which is about a 20% attach rate.

Maybe SSB isn't as big of a game in Japan as it is in the US.

'cause the japanese are known for their staid and well thought out buying decisions.

Devil May Cry sold 30,000 Xbox 360 units in Japan?

What, did everyone buy 2 copies each?

It'll do better in America, I'm sure.

Also, Suzumiya Haruhi ftw.

It'll definitely beat half a million in the U.S., assuming they have the stock for it.

You know as soon as you threw the Haruhi game in, you made it blatantly obvious how uncredible games sales in Japan are right? Do want DMC for the 360 though. I'll just leech off my friend's copy of Brawl.

Remember that it was already known that there would be shortages , and that they would be shipping the rest between Monday and Thursday next week.

I expect the sales to go much higher through the week as Nintendo finishes shipping out the game to those crazy Japanese.

I don't know if Im gonna be interested in SSBB, I'll have to wait and see if the online play is as good as it should be. Still waiting for the wii to do it justice

I'm buying SSBB on day one, and I've long been a diehard Smash fanboy... but I'm still terribly disappointed in the roster. I don't care if it's a fit or not--I waited seven years for *spoiler!* to not be a clone, and for *spoiler!* to be a playable character; plus, *spoiler!* was a now-or-never character that may not be a player character in a future Smash game.

Yes, the soundtrack is amazing; Sub-Space Emissary looks to be utterly awesome; and if Masterpieces lead to Earthbound being on Virtual Console and maybe even the entire Mother series coming to the US, hell yeah power to SSBB. But it doesn't change how disappointed I am and will continue to be over the roster.

I pre-ordered a copy of SSBB from GameStop a few weeks ago. Had to return a game, and they asked (like always) "Would you like to preorder a game?".

It's probably the first and last time I'll ever say "HELL YES." to that question.

But anyways, these are some pretty amazing numbers. Let's just pray that it does that well over here in the US. The Wii needs a good kick-start like this in order to keep its lead. :3

The-Excel just doesn't understand how awesome Haruhi really is. It's ok, brother. We can't all be enlightened.

I'll light a candle for you, or something.

If I was in Japan right now my wallet would hurt because I would have picked up all of those titles...+ a PS3 for Disgea 3. I just want SSBB now, the waiting is hard now that we have all those videos of bastards playing the game and not really enjoying it, they enjoy their stats on youtube.

Man, I love living in Ch1na. If I had a modded Wii, I'd totally walk into town and buy this game for 80 cents. Odds are they had it available here the same day it came out in J-pan.
