Because of the recent events in Japan, production of the NGP has been disrupted, forcing Sony to rethink its global launch strategy. Originally planned to be released in most major regions by the holidays, the NGP may now only appear in a single region (currently unspecified) by year's end.
In addition to causing a further drop in Sony stocks, this announcement means that the 3DS will have an even greater lead on the NGP. This could be a blessing in disguise, though. Sony can really work on making the NGP launch spectacular, especially in light of the mixed reception of the 3DS launch.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Agree and disagree. I agree that NGP can use the time to build on some more launch titles and work on planning a good sweet spot for pricing. I suggest having those pre-installed Xperia Play games on the NGP, or like 5 PSP greatest hits games pre installed like God of War: Ghost of Sparta, ModNation, LittleBig Planet, Crisis Core: FF7, and locoroco.
I disagree on the mixed 3DS reception. This negativity was because of people expecting a Nintendo game on the par of Zelda or Kid Icarus, but instead got a variety of titles covering every genre. Variety pisses off people, apparently. Also those 'complaints' of being dizzy from 3D....what the fuck do you expect?
Still, I'm looking forward to the NGP. Just release my Resistance and make it a launch title. Y'know....fo da shawties?
....3DS launched BEFORE the quake happened, stupid.
This seems like as good an excuse as any not to bring up any claims of this being a good thing because 'it doesn't has no gaemz' or 'Sony only can't do anything', at least for now.
PLEASE BE EUROPE.
Lol yah right!
Don't all launches get that?
If there is one thing in the world of gaming fandom that completely mystifies me, it's the concept of constantly comparing total units sold of systems with launch dates that were months apart. This entire idea that "first place" and such should be based on an uneven metric is pure ignorance of how the business world operates. It's just a chest-thumping statistic for those without much in the way of intelligence.
With that out of the way, I hope Sony can at least hit January for the "gift card season", which has become a bigger deal than it used to be.
Lmao, I know, but I can dream can't I?
I'm excited to own both handhelds, but I think Sony has a real chance to gain further ground here. Even if the system is expensive, I just want them to keep the cost of the games down, and I will be happy. After all, you only have to buy the system once.
I am also confused by the mixed reactions some people are having regarding the 3DS. Nintendo gives you several warnings about prolonged exposure to 3D and yet you still whine about it? Also, while the launch line up isn't that great, it's also not that bad either. Give it time people, you know there are going to be great titles in the near future.
Unfortunatly, whatever it proves when it launches 3DS will likely be ready for its first price drop.
But seriously this is disappointing because I was looking forward to the added competition to push Nintendo to release stellar killer apps.
But I understand, they couldn't work on the NGP during the time of disaster, they could of had many employees that got injured or something, and Sony has to provide health care coverage for them. And lots of other things.
I don't like the news, but I understand, I guess my wallet can relax a bit now :)
Ummmmm... when multiple products are released in close proximity to each another and they are billed by their respective manufacturers as sharing the same consumer playing field, they are most definitely in competition. Releasing ahead of your competition ensures time to build greater mind share and third-party awareness.
The 360 managed to storm out a year ahead of the PS3, and that gave developers more time to grow accustomed to its architecture. Sure, showing up first isn't a sure thing, but it's an undeniable advantage.
Your fingers would snap.
Ah well. Gives me some more time to scrape up so dough. My bitch of an ex wife has been taking me to the cleaners lately. My game purchases have suffered huge!!
Lifetime sales when products are over a year apart does not reflect competition. Sales rate does, and that is what retailers consider. Current sales rate is most important, obviously, but even lifetime sales rate is a better metric than total lifetime sales, especially when you're talking about a significant amount of time between initial release. Installation base and attachment rate are also important from the software side of things. Notice that GameStop's last sales brief spoke of installation base over lifetime totals.
In simple terms, no one cares about market share in 2007, they care about market share in 2011. Which would you rather push, a product that has sold 750k units in a year, or one that has sold 500k units in 6 months? Or, from another perspective, does anyone give validity to contest where one side starts out with a significant advantage over the other?
The whole idea of who is "winning" based on lifetime sales is only important to people who think in terms of bragging rights. I guarantee you that Sony is more worried about how much market share they can take at launch than they are about how many units Nintendo is ahead in some imaginary race. Game console history also tells us that being the first to release to market is no real harbinger of success.
Just to let you know, what I said in my first post wasn't aimed at you specifically, it's just something that I think people value way too much.
If that's the case, than yeah that sucks for them, because the longer they take, the bigger the 3DS's lead will get. Which at this point, I guess it doesn't really matter anymore either way. The NPG was always destine to be in 2nd place this generation. This is just putting the final nail, in its “dead on arrival” casket!
Yet it's enough of a worry that, Sony admits, it actually worries them.
@Epic: Did you miss that all those launch games except the remake of Street Fighter 4 sucked? Only one good game makes it a pretty poor launch - having that game be a third rerelease puts you about on level with the 3DO's launch.
Yeah, thought the same thing.
ZING! and/or ...Too soon?
Also, I think they should steel the idea of the iPad 2 magnet cover. Without a somewhat bulky case the original PSP was a scary thing to carry around. That huge exposed screen is just asking for scratches.
Have you played any of the launch titles? There are other really good ones. Ghost recon is awesome, although I wish they would've just called it shadow wars. Despite reviews samurai warriors is also really good. Monkey ball is well done but not my cup of tea. The built in stuff is awesome. Ssf4 is good but not the only good game.
