Japan braces for a Super Smash Bros. Brawl brawl due to shortages photo

If a delay didn't hurt enough, reports of a shortage of copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl should have Japanese gamers clutching their chest and their reserve tickets.

Our sister site Japanator points to a couple of shortage issues that have already arisen in the island country. Japanese game retailer Lepton says that they are only getting 154 copies. We wish them luck in filling their 800+ preorders. Yikes! J-blog Canned Dogs says that the store is going as far as to purchase copies from other outlets at full price to satisfy demand. They managed to secure an additional 100 copies of the game at 7,350 yen each, which would cause them to lose money on the 6,800 yen game. I'm sweating for them.

Importer National Console Report also recently said that they've closed preorders due to the shortage:

Last night, vendors in Japan warned us that there might be a shortage of [SSBB] so we're closing preorders today. If the information turns out to be erroneous, we'll accept new preorders again.

We haven't seen any confirmed release numbers, but we've heard that shipments could be as low as 300,000 for launch. Next week's release might get a bit scary. Do you forsee any real brawls from the shortage of Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

What the hell is Nintendo's problem? I swear it's like they think people don't want to buy their stuff, so they just don't make enough... either that or they believe in increasing demand by intentionally not making enough...

...Enter the conspiracy theorists

About the story, what did people expect? This is Japan people! Even in the US people are going crazy for this game (including me). Nintendo to Japan is like fat people in America. Ouch.

I only foresee brawls in the queue lines with items turned off.

Otherwise, everyone will be having a good time.

@Remo

I bet it takes more time to make the packaging and instruction manuals. They should just let people buy the disks with vouchers for the rest.

Fighting over a game shortage?

I thought that only happened here in America, where people are actually stupid enough to start it. >.>

Looks like I'll be dropping another pre-order come February. It will be my second pre-order EVER (first being No More Heroes, which I reserved last night 'cause distributors don't seem to think Canada is a real country , or something).

Lepton? Who are they? Tell me how many Yodobashi, BIC, etc. are getting- those are the big stores.

I don't see a shortage happening in the US, because if anything about this rumor is true........ it's that Nintendo is using resources to make more copies for the US, where there's more people.

I hope that during this 50+ day delay they crank up production so that there aren't any shortages here. I've had my pre-order in since October of last year, so I should be ok... but I'd buy a copy at Wal-Mart if need be.

I wouldn't count on the US having plenty. Nintendo still can't keep up with the demands for the console, and with their proprietary disc format they have been using starting at the GameCube, they cannot enlist help from 3rd party manufacturer's for the media.

wii disks are like dvds, but are actually a format nintendo developed for wii games. nintendo always develops their own game format, because they dont want to pay fees. hence, gamecube mini disks and wii disks.

this is not the first time there was a shortage for wii software. just look at the UK and mario + sonic at the olympics.

At least we'll get to know everything about the game well before it hits North America next. Hopefully, Nintendo can use February to produce a good amount of copies of the game for both Japan and North America by then.

Seriously though, how many times have they delayed this game? And they still don't have enough? They should tell us what's going on at least before we all gang up and send them flying into the screen.
I've got my copy reserved so I'm not too concerned.

This is pretty stupid, Nintendo has to know that Brawl will sell like crazy, Brawl was the cube's top selling, this is Nintendo's Halo or MGS if you will, its their big game.

From the second the final game was done they should have been making discs, and before it was done they should been printing manuals and everything else, what the fuck is wrong with them?

Wait... weren't people surprised when Galaxy didn't sell as many copies as they thought?

Is a multiplayer beat-em-up just 500x times more popular than a "real" Mario game or what?
