Japan bans R4, Japanese gamers shrug and continue playing photo

I'm a fu*cking nerd, and that's why I insist on having the actual game in my collection over some download. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the charms of an end-all cartridge that holds several games, does emulation, runs homebrew code, plays music, and much more. I can't promise that everyone rocking an R4 is doing legal things with it, but I'd like to think that plenty of gamers are.

The R4 flash cart is "big in Japan," but it may start seeing a decline in popularity after the outlawing of sales of this device. The Tokyo District Court has granted an injunction against the makers of the R4, knocking it out of retail stores forever. TechRadar says that Nintendo, Square Enix and Capcom are all backing the Japanese court's decision, calling the device a "violation" of Japanese law.

Has there been any word of this device working on Nintendo's DSi system? I'm not asking for me, of course.

I think someone made a video showing ALL the emulator carts (at the time) being tested out on the DSi. There was a low success rate. That was a few months back though.

The illegalness makes people want it more!

They apparently have cards that work on the DSi. I believe one was an Acekard 2.1 or something, and the Cyclo got a new version...

I think people are more waiting for something to flash the bios or whatnot so they can use SD cards directly on the system, no need for a flashcard or the like.

The current version of the flash carts won't work on the DSi but from what I hear, it's already been hacked and I wouldn't be surprised to see a new homebrew cartridge pop up. I'm sure preventing the use was high on their things to do list when designing a new DS.

I don't own an r4 and I am restraining myself from buying one until after the ds' lifespan is over, that way I'm not depriving the videogame industry of any money. I think its fine to play ds games as long as they're off production, so the companies aren't loosing money. But, personally, i prefer to buy all of my videogames, it just gives me a good conscience and its fun to actually have the cartridge and the box, even if its slightly inconvenient to carry around a bunch of teeny cartridges. I hope nintendo finds a way to block these media cart thingies in their next system so its really hard to pirate games, but im sure people will find a way around ANYTHING nintendo does...it sort of makes me sad...and yet, ds game sales are higher than ever so I guess these things aren't really affecting the sales enough to damage the companies...

@Mista Smegheneghan the AK2i is the only cart known to work on the DSi I was using an m3 but replaced it with a AK2 on my slim- it is an awesome cart- I like it a lot better than the M3 because of it's customizable UI and start menu functions- though it is a little slower to load because it caches all of your thumbnails when you load a folder

Forget what everyone else is talking about on the post... I giggled at the simplicity of the title of this article.

When the DS lets you skin its main menu with, say, Ferham from Megaman X Command Mission right out the box, then we'll talk.

The company in China that manufactures the R4 is closed and service is discontinued, before the DSi is released.

The first card that supports DSi is the Acekard2i, and there are a few more who supports the DSi without modification. I don't own a DSi though, so I don't care much about it actually...

Last time I checked, there were flash carts working on the DSi, but through a dirty hack, something like embedding a game ROM in their firmware. The general consensus was that it would be easy for Nintendo to block those, so a better approach was needed.

I have an M3DS Simply. And I love it.

And neither works on the DSi. You'd need an Acekard 2i (I think)

No, the R4 won't and never will work on the DSi. The Japanese are once again, very late to the party.

What did they think would happen if they sold these things in the brick-and-mortar stores of Akihabara? Jesus.

Know what you should do? Get you one of those new M3 DS Real carts with the card slot on the side and replace the sticker with one from an actual DS game. No one will be the wiser.

@Mista, too bad nobody really wants to get a DSi. It's a joke. I'm happy with my Lite and my CycloDS.

CycloDS really rocks! but you`ve to be careful, `cause CycloDS break easily. and i heard about some flashcards working on DSi too (DSTTi).

Nintendo could give some good SDK to work on. i would love it!
