January NPD: Wii wins the monthly console sales war photo

There are no January surprises to report when it comes to the latest numbers for consoles released by NPD group. The Wii wins the month with 466K units sold, while Nintendo's other piece of hardware, the DS, had its little white back with a solid performance of 422K sold. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 sold well, shifting 323K and 277K respectively as the PSP and PS2 rounded out the month with 101K and a meager 41.6K.

These numbers are down from December's report. After hours and hours of thought, debate, and even an attempted stabbing or two, we've decided as a group that the lower sales are the result of January not having a day like Christmas. Go figure.

As a fan of co-op shooters I'm seriously glad to see Army of Two TFD on the NPD top 10, the game is super fun with a friend and I'm glad other people bought it.

I'm amazed the PS2 is still selling that well.

No Bayonetta on that list makes me sad...

Nice to see Mass Effect 2 did pretty well, though.

Well it looks like Jim's little proclaim that Bayonetta is PlatinumGames first, and only hit was a bit premature. Sega shipping out 1.1 million units to retailers (across two platforms) doesn't mean squat, if they don't end up selling them to actually costumers. Not that I'm happy about this, because I'm not. The game deserved better than this, but this is why you should never count your chickens, before they hatch Jim!

As much as I love Mass Effect 2, I have to admit I didn't expect it to hold first place for long. I mean, its MARIO!

Mario has to drop off that chart eventually, right?

I mean, at some point everyone will own it.

Yeah, NSMB Wii will drop off in no time, just like Mario Kart Wii.

Everyone seems to think that nintendo is winning this so called console war.
I want numbers of Wii consoles traded in.

@ Burning Fire - Even if millions of wii consoles were traded in, it doesn't changee the install base, because the used wiis are simply cycled back into the market. Retailers would not have needed to order over 65 million new wiis over the past few years if they hadn't already sold nearly all their used wii's back into the market.

Personally, I would be much more interested in the true number of functioning Xbox 360's in the market, considering all the hardware problems and the fact that Microsoft bricked nearly a million modded ones last fall.

I think if we looked at X360 mods and RROD, XB360 would be so far behind it would never catch up.

What do the think people see when they see Bayonetta?

A freaky chick.

The marketing for it was pathetic, Bayonetta is a classic example of a developer doing what HE wants to do more so then anything else (e.g. what the customer wants). Perfect lesson for those who want game idols. That is the same reason why directors aren't getting the same respect as actors, acting is acting but directing and developing the movie is a whole process that involves many people, many opinions and so forth (and of course the job itself is highly dependant on ideas that the director is having, while acting is more of a static job much of the time... e.g. if the actor is talented the work will be good, while a director can have all the talent/money in the world yet still be working with a horrible idea/story/movie/etc, al a Avatar).

@ Hcapt:

While I agree that Mario bros wii will eventually go down on the list, it's gonna be a best seller for a long time. Funny how geoff keighley is back pedaling on all that talk of Mario selling more than modern warfare 2...

@Letters numbers and spaces are ok

There's a few people that just want Kamiya to keep doing whatever the hell he wants, because it hasn't disappointed them yet.

Granted, the marketing was incredibad. But it's hard to divorce Bayonetta from that sort of presentation when it's part of the charm.

@ Toadofsky -
That's why I compared it to Mario Kart Wii. Mario Kart Wii is number 5 on the list for this month. Actually, I think that the original Mario Bros. series probably has more staying power than a kart-racing spin-off of the Mario Bros. series, so I expect the game to stay up in the top ten for years.
