Yesterday, many Destructoid readers were upset to hear Nintendo of Europe's Laurent Fischer (that's a dude!) thoughts on the Wii storage limit problem, as he feels that only "geeks and otaku" desire additional memory for their little white console. You all weren't the only ones pissed off at the Edge magazine quote from their WiiWare launch coverage in Europe.
The easily angered but always awesome God of War designer David Jaffe had some choice words for Nintendo after catching word of this quote. In a blog post, he blasts Nintendo for snubbing their loyal fanbase for mainstream success.
Ok, so if this is true, it's really, really sad.
And not so much because Nintendo seems to be telling a chunk of its loyal fanbase to go f*ck itself, but because it's [sic] just reeks of junior high school vibe immaturity bullshit.
He continues with a movie analogy that he totally loses me on, but I'm totally with him on his love of the "old Nintendo." He says that both the old and new Nintendo should be proud of their accomplishments. But he can't get over Fischer's comment.
a marketing person who has no real clue about games and thinks she's being cute and coy by dissing the 'geeks' cause she thinks the mainstream loves them now....if this is the case, she really needs someone to sit her down and explain to her which side her f*cking toast has been buttered on for years and will eventually get back to being buttered on....
Wow, he's pissed! He's channeling Kratos here!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Besides when Sony is blowing him.
Plus, when do we isten to NOE anyway? I"m sure Laurent Fischer is getting is tongue cut out as we speak. Let it go.
@Kryptinite:he made god of war and twisted metal and kratos is always pissed.
When you work in PR, your word represents the company. This is nothing new.
Nintendo is lucky they still made damn good first party games, otherwise I'd be completely done with them as a company.
"Nintendo:We Don't Make Anything For Geeks Anymore, So Fuck Off"
This is not just beyond whether or not Laurent understands gaming and gaming culture, this is about Laurent being a bad PR rep and him not knowing his own damn trade.
Isn't this the pot calling the kettle black?
i do find it awful that this Fischer guy is so dense
Thats it? The DS does not fares much better either. The Wii is successfull because of yuppies making it the next fad ( akin to the iPod ) and the DS is doing strong cause of incredible THIRD PARTY development support, not first party.
Seriously Nintendo has managed to fool so many people: They hardware is vastly inferior on both console and handhelds, their first party support is TERRIBLE and ironically enough ONLY OTAKUS KEEP PLAYING FIRST PARTY NINTENDO GAMES! Seriously you go to any cosplay con and you'd see huge crowds lining up to play brawl or kart. Elsewhere people get things on the 360 or PS3.
I hope somebody fucking nukes Japan again just to get rid of Nintendo.
Actually, you'd be surprised.
I don't know, I'd much rather play Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. than walk around in GTA for hours. I know that not everyone is like me, but that's how I am. Super Paper Mario, Zelda, and Mario Kart are also all excellent, and Metroid is pretty sweet too.
Serisouly though. Nintendo doesn't care about the hard core. Why should they when they can sell carnival games till the cows come home.
also, i love Jaffe now. He's right. When your audience wants something, you don't discard it because they're "geeks and otakus". They're your costumers so STFU and serve them
I too am amazed that when they originally announced the Wii's spec at E3, that no one (developer or publisher) questioned that decision, to push Nintendo that more memory would be needed, if not for themselves and their games, to convince other second and third parties, to jump onboard enforce.
Its also ironic and darkly funny, that Sony made PS3 too complicated and Nintendo made Wii uncomplicated, lacking techwise, and are still in the lead. 512mb?? Maybe if the console was made 1995, that might be acceptable, but in the 21st century its totally lacking vision.
At times, while I do think developers can work round Wii's shortcomings (PS2 development taught them how), it seems Nintendo made Wii's for themselves first (knowing that their games are never too tech heavy) not thinking of other developers at all. If they had, there would be a hard drive.
For us consumers to be dismissed by Nintendo, when we question the awkwardness of friend codes, lack of sd card booting, and not even an external hard drive for demos and such, is ridiculous. Even if Nintendo produced an extenal, it need not be vital for casuals to buy, unless they want the extra content and advantages, in a Xbox Live kind of way. Its not hard to show developers and consumers some love, to help Wii in areas its current weak in.
I hope Nintendo do sort a hard drive out for Wii, but overall its this kind of thing that worried me when Nintendo HQ restructured a few years ago. Even before that, Nintendo's selectively ignoring of customers goes way back. The GC had its problems and I guess they thought us customers would never leave them. Most of us didn't, but most the developers did in time, and the GC slowly died an early death. Are Nintendo still bitter from those dark days, hugely of their own making? Maybe so.
When Nintendo do listen to us and fix problems that are fixable, they are really good with their customer service, their recent examples being the Wiimote jacket to stop fool smashing tvs, DS problems with its screen improved in DS Lite and before that the GBA screen problems improved by GBA SP. So, if Nintendo can fix these problems, why not fix the Wii hard drive issue too, and stop fudging it?
I guess E3 08' will tell all. We'll soon know how much they love/hate us.
Also, who the fuck asked him anyway?
Right. This being a symptom of a problem unique to Nintendo and all.
Look, I'm not saying that it's something we should all just accept, but that if you want to get up in arms about it, you gotta stop dropping the blame for it solely at Nintendo's feet like a fucking jackass.
Interestingly enough, if you want to blame anyone for sequels, you gotta blame us gamers. Yup, we eat that shit up, while pretty-much any game that isn't a sequel to a well-established game or based on a popular license dies a horrible death.
So you can't really bitch and whine about a company that gives gamers more of what they want. Stop supporting sequels for the sake of it, and maybe they'll start taking more chances....
Nintendo just happens to be doing both at the same time ( Sequels in name and also repetitive as hell ) but don't you go around blaming me for it, I put my money where my mouth is and do go out of my way to find oscure games that offer new things or don't try to copy everything else.
So yes I intend to bitch, whine, scream and unleash Japan's weak point ( NIntendo ) for massive damage. Cause maybe some tools outta snap out of it and stop this mess, what I know is that nothing will change if I just shut my mouth about it since 1 person ain't gonna make a difference in sales.
Next, please!
No, rather than shift the blame to me in some sort of nonsensical "I know you are, but what am I?" play at superiority, what you need to do is get your head out of your ass, whipe the shit out of your eyes, and take a look at reality.
Pick any sequel from any given publisher out of a hat, and you'll find a game that features incremental changes to the underlying formula established by its predecessor. Sequels are sort of supposed to do that, as unreasonable as it might seem. They have to remain appealing to fans of the previous game, while featuring enough to set it aside as its own entity.
Reading what you said, it's clear that you understand that much. However, what you lack is the ability to distance your perception of industry trends from whatever it is that drives you to be such a fucking troll. You have an irrational hard-on for hating Nintendo, when at worst they're just doing the exact same thing that every publisher does with their sucessful IPs. It might not be desirable to you, but they don't deserve ire for it any more than say, Capcom, Koei, Rockstar, EA, and just about any other publisher that turns out sequels to their popular games.
You might justify your trolling by saying that it's for the betterment of the industry, but not only is your crusade made worthless because you're being such a narrow-minded fuck about it, but you're assuming that we all ought to share your way of thinking in the first place. More to the point, you seem to think that we're being force-fed these sequels, when I'm pretty sure that the people who buy them do so of their own free will. I would think that that's why they keep being made.
So I would say that all that is required of you, if anything, is that you keep plugging away at getting your message across by letting your wallet do the talking for you, and that you stop being such a presumptuous douche-rag. That's where your responsibility both begins and ends.
Cuz they don't need to slave at the computer for hours on end to translate wii fit or it's lik for one thing.
I can imagine this comes off a long and arguous session of translating SSBB and as such, he/she/it feels intitled to a free swing at the very people who want to buy that game and thus nessesitate the long time it took for the thing to come out.
or something.
Sony made their hardware almost prohibitively difficult to use (not to mention prohibitively expensive), made no effort in assisting developers become accustomed to a needlessly complex system, with the number of cores likely being determined by a number that was sufficiently impressive compared to the 360's. Blu-ray was integrated with no attention paid to the fact that the drive couldn't read the disc fast enough to play a game. This is of course because the format was destined to propel to PS3 to the top of the new movie format heap. Even in the realm of film, Blu-ray was completely obliterated by HD-DVD in terms of features, and only aggressive exclusivity deals and a sufficiently impressive storage space compared to HD-DVD would blind bullet-point obsessed techies. Case in point
: pause functionality was ADDED in and update. Wow, thanks so much there Sony, really thought your format through there, made sure it was finished before you thrust it out the door, destined to sell a million units without any games.
There's plenty of blame to be thrown around to each of the three console makers. I'm incredibly disappointed with Nintendo's "bold strategy" console barely producing any inventive traditional games. I am also disappointed with the graphical ability of the console, and the lack of storage space.
Im irrational in my rants, but if Nintendo is the target here is merely to stay on topic. Real criticism is whats needed, being apologetic its what has driven the industry to such sorry state.
